  1. A pretty tough one for me... because I hardly like any of the songs in the poll.

Well, that's not exactly true. I do like about one song from each of the options. But these are all from the era that I don't particularly care for, so even the ones here I like, I don't regard too highly.

  2. I've been looking all over the place for bass tabs of the new songs ever since they came out, and have so far not found any. So I'm very glad to hear that you're working on some of them and can't wait to see them posted - I'll be eagerly awaiting them. Especially The Anarchist. Thank you!

I'm surprised there aren't even tabs for Headlong Flight out there yet, since it's been out a while longer than the album. I expected tabs would be out for this stuff pretty quickly, but I guess not. Hell, I can't even find bass tabs for Primus' latest album, which came out almost a year ago now, and considering that it's Primus, I'd have thought the tabbing community would have been all over it. But they let me down. angry.gif

  3. Great thread, I love this stuff. I definitely have a sweet spot for the instrumentals, and watching them being played live is even better.

The video you posted of La Villa is my favorite as well. For Leave That Thing Alone, the Time Machine DVD performance is the best one I've ever seen.

Back when I was just starting to get into Rush, and YYZ was already my favorite song, I went looking for videos of it on Youtube, and came across the Rush in Rio DVD performance. That was probably the first live Rush video I'd seen. It completely blew me away. That one will always be special as sort of a landmark to me. I'm not a big fan of mid and late 80's Rush, so I don't tend to favor those performances. The S&A DVD version deserves recognition because Geddy's playing on it is excellent.

Though it's far from the best, I've also always enjoyed this performance of YYZ:

Geddy's solos are especially fierce in this one, and I also love the little flourishes he throws in at about 4:03 and 4:17, which I've never heard him do any other time.

    I don't think a whole lot

I'd say a bit here and there, such as with the intentional nods to their past like they've mentioned with Headlong Flight, but mostly, they continue to move in new directions.

  5. That's the way it should be. Even aside from whatever absurd threads get made, even if there were only the most rational discussions taking place on a site like this, it would never be a good idea for any artist to read that stuff, for exactly the reason Geddy states. I don't know why anyone would want it to be different.

I never understood why some people have delusions about the band actually coming on here and reading what we say... fing.gif I've seen it with all kinds of fan forums. On sites about television shows, some people convince themselves that the writers will read the fan sites. I guess it's just that they want to think what they're saying is important, that it will matter somehow.

  6. I'm happy to look at the setlist, I want to look at the setlist, I don't think it spoils anything. In fact I'd never heard of this idea before of avoiding "spoilers" relating to what songs will be played at a show before coming to this site, when the Time Machine tour was getting going. I thought it was pretty weird.
  7. Yeah, if it were an instrumental, it wouldn't just be the same song we have now but without the lyrics. They would have definitely altered it to stand on its own more as an instrumental. That said, as much as I love instrumentals and wish that we got a new one, I'm perfectly happy with Headlong Flight the way it is and I think it's probably better as it is. I think the vocals are great.

I also think the title track, Clockwork Angels, is overrated. In fact, since they will probably cut a couple of songs from the new album on the first leg of the tour at least, this is the one that I would miss the least.

Unfortunately for you, that's one of the ones that's pretty much guaranteed not to be cut. biggrin.gif

  9. You know, I had a similar kind of story to the OP. Being as excited as I was to hear the album, I was eagerly awaiting any leak that might have happened before the official release day. How did I know the leak was finally out? Because I tried coming here and the site wouldn't load. I knew instantly. laugh.gif
  10. I noticed it, but I'm sure it was just a choice he made. Not everything needs a flashy drum fill - the previous time he did put one in, and a great one at that, so that time he probably just wanted to let it breathe a little and mix it up.
  11. Overrated: The Wreckers. I like it, but I think some people are just falling for the very accessible chorus, leading to it often being placed higher than I think it really deserves. Runner up for this would probably be The Garden (gasp!) which I do think is very good, but still.

Underrated: I'd probably have to agree about Wish Them Well. It's got some solid, strong parts, but it doesn't get a lot of love because it doesn't exactly stand out the way some others do.

  12. Caravan: Geddy's bass solos

    BU2B: bassline during the chorus

Clockwork Angels: "High above the city square" parts, especially as it comes out of the blues section with the line "everything will turn out for the best"

The Anarchist: "The lenses inside of me that paint the world black" and the rest of the chorus

Carnies: "The glint of iron wheels..."

Halo Effect: beginning of second verse when drums come in

Seven Cities of Gold: If I had to pick just one, the bass intro

    The Wreckers: the verses

Headlong Flight: "It didn't always feel that way", Alex's solo and part right before it

Wish Them Well: "thank your stars you're not that way, turn your back and walk away"

The Garden: the breakdown, "Forever dwells in that moment, hope is what remains to be seen"

listening to the 3 singles (especially the 2010 songs) to death before listening to the album. The 3 singles are of unbelievable quality, and because I had sucked all enjoyment out of them before I had the actual album in my mind, I now associate those 3 songs as being "outside" of the album in a sense. The album is no longer as cohesive an experience, if you get what I'm saying. It feels like I've got a new album to listen to, with 3 songs randomly included that might as well have come out in the 70's.

I'm also not enjoying the album as much as I would have because I'm missing out on half the enjoyment I would have otherwise. It wouldn't have mattered, but I think the singles are among the top half of the songs.

I completely agree, except for the part about having listened to them so much I don't enjoy them anymore. I still enjoy them, but I definitely have the problem of considering the songs to sort of be "outside" the album. I too think they are among the top songs on the album and it would really have been amazing to hear them for the first time when I heard the rest of the album. I'm enjoying the album plenty, but I'd probably be way more amped than I am now. Of course, the tradeoff would then have been getting nothing to hold us over for the years in between, so confused13.gif

  14. I feel the need to update mine once again. Carnies has pretty much fallen into place for me now. Also, the songs that have been getting stuck in my head and therefore I've been playing much more than others have changed, so I'm basing it on what I'm most into right now.

    The Anarchist

    Seven Cities of Gold

    Clockwork Angels

    Headlong Flight

    Caravan

    Carnies

    BU2B

    The Wreckers

    Wish Them Well

    The Garden

    Halo Effect
