  2. QUOTE (rushgoober @ Oct 4 2012, 09:58 AM)
I've long suspected that a large majority of the people who don't want them in, or claim to not want them in, will in actuality be THRILLED when they finally do get in, whether they admit to it or not.

But, for all those who insist on being jaded and cynical to the bitter end, you by all means enjoy that. wink.gif

Well I have to disagree, although when you assume that anyone who does is "not admitting it" or just "jaded and cynical" that's not so easy, but I'll try anyway.

Here's the thing. If all these years Rush had not been included in a real Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one that actually lived up to that name, and had now finally been nominated, it would be great and I'd be rooting for them to get in. But what many don't seem to realize is that this RRHOF is not credible as such. It is in name only. What it really seems to be is just some group of people that say "let's include any group we like into this club." Rock hardly has anything to do with it. So, when it's just some arbitrary group of people deciding if our favorite band is finally worthy of their little exclusive club, that has no other meaning to it, then it doesn't matter to me and I don't see why it should to anyone else.

  3. Geddy's talked about this recently in relation to The Anarchist:

    QUOTE
Listening to the record it's apparent that some of the playing is very technical, Geddy's bass parts particularly so. It's perhaps strange that he doesn't explore the possible difficulties he'll encounter when having to handle bass, vocals and keyboards at the same time until they start rehearsals for the tour.

"I don't want to think about that because it scares the shit out of me!" laughs the frontman. "As soon as I recorded the bass line for The Anarchist', and then put the vocal on it, I looked at Nick and said, This song is going to be a motherf*cker to play live!', and he goes, 'What? Really? It's not so complicated.' The thing is, it's not about what's complicated, it's about the direction they're moving in; the bass is moving in one direction and the vocals are moving in another direction. I'm going to have to play that f*cker so many times that I can't think about it anymore, and that's why we've left ourselves more rehearsal time before this tour than we have for any other record, because I think we're going to need it - at least I know I will!"

He absolutely killed it in Chicago and it got one of the biggest crowd reactions of the night. If you've seen the kind of applause he gets following the "Freewill" solo, it's pretty much on par with that.

I think Freewill is a little different, because the applause then is for all three of them, or at least it should be, since that part isn't just an Alex solo, it's an everybody solo.

But yeah, I've been trying to find every video of Analog Kid that I can and watching the solo in all of them. He kills it every time that I've seen, and the crowd roars for him every time too. I love that they chose this song just so we get to see this solo played live.

  5. QUOTE (drbirdsong @ Sep 12 2012, 07:18 PM)
I've seen him in that shirt before, but I can't remember where. I like the fact, that like me, he doesn't give up an article of clothing on account of age.

I noticed that too for some reason, same one he had in the Classic Albums special.

Good interview, though I don't know why it has a recent date on it because I remember seeing it months ago.

  6. I wouldn't be heartbroken without it, but I think it works great live because it gives them all a big stretch of time to just go crazy and play, and I would always want at least one instance of that in a concert. The performance on the Time Machine DVD is one of the most incredible things I've ever seen, so I'm grateful for that. I'm not in love with the reggae part, but it doesn't bother me because I just see it as a prelude to the main attraction of the song.
  7. QUOTE (CygnusGal @ Sep 10 2012, 09:29 PM)
Personally, I find bass solos best kept very short (like YYZ,  La Villa or MalNar - here's a bar or two...go!).  To my ear, there is nothing worse than a "lead bass player".  The bass is a rhythm instrument and I believe best belongs in the "pocket" stepping out maybe only for a musical smile. smile.gif  Then, it's right back into the pocket.

That's what it is traditionally, but I don't believe it has to be relegated to only that anymore. That's an old way of thinking. I'm not saying the bassist should be running all over every track in every band, but there is room for it to share the spotlight and not only be in the "pocket". Exactly the way it is in Rush. And I would point to Les Claypool and Primus as an example of the great things that can be done by a "lead" bass player.

To be clear, I'm not advocating for an "eight minute bass masturbation" which for some reason is what some people here have immediately thought of when a bass solo has been mentioned. I wouldn't want to hear any instrument doing that sort of thing. All I'm saying is that there's no reason there couldn't be a nice, relatively brief, musical piece of just Geddy playing his bass, just like the times when it'll only be Alex playing his guitar before a song. I'm sure he could come up with a great composition that would be very pleasing to the ear, if he wanted to do such a thing.

As for solos in the other sense of the word, such as a guitar solo in the middle of a song, I think Geddy does a perfect job of those already. I'm always happy to hear it when it happens. But that's not what the OP was talking about.

  8. I still don't understand the concept of being "spoiled" in this way. Knowing the ending of a movie before you've seen it? Sure. But knowing what songs will be played and what the stage production is like? I don't get it. I don't go to a show for the excitement of discovering what they're gonna do, I go to watch and listen to them play, experience the music live with a bunch of other fans, etc. so knowing about the show ahead of time doesn't ruin that enjoyment for me. The experience is enough, I guess. I understand people wanting to preserve the surprise of finding out what song is next only as they start playing it, but I just never saw that as a big deal.
  9. "Bass solos annoy me"? I don't understand this. To those who have said that, are you also annoyed by guitar and drum solos? If not, what is so different about the bass? A good solo is a good solo.

I would LOVE to see Geddy play a piece where he just plays alone for a while, like Alex gets to do.

  10. QUOTE (kentpilot @ Sep 9 2012, 03:01 AM)
I have a full show recording I'm mastering it now, reducing clapping(clipping from a single f***ing person) and Reducing a buzzing noise experienced in the first few songs all in the right channel. I can verify this is the best I've heard Rush since Vapor Trails! It's amazing every play through, I'm only 5 songs in on the mastering as well I listened to the rough recording in the car all day marking down bad spots in the the recording it's great both ways. Grand Designs is definitely a highlight!

Please keep us posted on that, I'm sure we'd all like to hear it.

  11. Just heard Geddy say before Working Man "this one you might recognize" laugh.gif I guess some of the crowd must have been a little confused with the first set.

Actually, could even have been the second set too, now that I think about it. Old, rarely played songs and a new album... people who don't know the band very well were in for a rude awakening last night.

  12. Well my plan to keep updating the first post with new links has been foiled because for some reason the site is no longer letting me edit that post. So, here's a new list of links.

  14. I'm not a fan of the late 80's material, and especially not POW, but even I can appreciate the first set for being something new and different, stuff they don't usually play, and I know it's made some people very happy so that's cool with me (and I really can't wait to watch them shred the hell out of Analog Kid). My only real disappointment with this setlist is the encore, which is a bit boring, but that's a minor gripe. Overall, I like it. Very excited to see the CA songs live.
