I grew up with the synth era as my new Rush. Therefore, Moving Pictures through HYF hold a place in my history...besides being great music. I felt that from 89 on, there were more tunes I did not care for. HYF was the first lp of that era to have tunes I would skip.

Oh, and the Trees... Cinderella Man. If you are a bass player, being a Rush fan is going to school... In a good way.

Back in the day when I was learning to play his bass lines the most difficult by a country mile were Circumstances and YYZ. The solo section from La Villa was another beast. Prime Mover and Turn the Page kept me up late as well. As much as people dislike it, Tai Shan has some challenging lines. In fact, HYF is one of the most challenging bass line albums since Hemispheres.

33 years for me as well. I was 11 when I first heard New World Man and Tom Sawyer (thought they would be on the same lp). I feel the same way you do. I remember that dip around presto... CP brought me back as well. It's fantastic to be closing in on 45 and being able to look back at most of my conscious life as having Rush along for the ride.
Thank you for posting this. It's good to travel back in time.

Freudian slip, anyone?

But, dammit

Nut it sure looks cool...

I played a 1275 for a song back in the 90s and couldn't get it off quickly enough when the song was done. It was as heavy and comfortable yo play as a Buick.

I use a Dunlop Primetone 1.3 on my dreadnought, strat and lp. Sometimes it makes its way to my basses, but very infrequently.

This album was played daily from the late 80s through the end of grad school in the early 90s. I still spin it at least twice a year.

Testament for me. Early Metallica up through justice for a close second.

I have their first 3 Lps. Haven't listened to them in years. I'll give them a spin.

I never played a wal, but I like the sounds from most who played them. I did not like Lee's sound though. Trevor Jones made one sound good though.

I like counterparts a lot better than t4e...I only like two songs from t4e...

Most of the tunes mentioned here surprise me. The only two Rush songs I believe are deserved of the hate are Superconductor and Dog Years. The one that surprises me is Fountain of Lamneth. There is a lot of good playing in there.

I love this album for two reasons...
It was the first album that came out after I had my license so it brings me back to that time of freedom, exploration, and watching the leaves change...
Also, despite the sound, these songs contain some of Geddy Lee's most impressive bass lines.

Also a maple board is a bit too bright for me on a jazz
-
For me it would be the Jazz with the rosewood board. That is my favorite kind of bass. Has a Rick and a Steinberger in the past and never warmed up to the tone. Geddy gets a great sound with the 4001 but I like his jazz sound better

He does a clinic in my hometown each year around thanksgiving and puts on a hell of a shred fest. He is good at what he does and is a genuinely nice guy. Not my cup of tea but probably has the best tone I have heard from that type of playing.

They played limelight in buffalo last tour

I think it would be interesting if none of the songs from the tour book make it into the set....
