  1. I don't know, I took a total of one half-hour lesson ever way back when and I hated it.

The guys I know who took lessons for much longer- and mind you this isn't a giant sample I'm sure- well all they ever wanted to do was sit around and play famous riffs and covers and crap all the time. It's like they walk in and the teachers just show them how to play Stairway to Heaven or whatever and that's it. They never wanted to just go jam or make up their own songs and I think it had a lot to do with those lessons.

Could be crap teachers, but I almost think learning like this influences your playing style in a negative and un-creative way.

    *shrug*

As a guitar teacher, I would not totally disagree with you. A good teacher is the key to having a good lesson. The issue is that the guitar is a different instrument to learn because there are so many types of guitars/guitar music that teachers usually skip over the fundamentals and the pre-requisites and get right into teaching songs that the students want to learn. Many teachers do not know these aforementioned facets of music/guitar.

There may be other reasons as well. The student wants to learn certain things and the teacher wants to retain the student. When teaching a student to play the intro solo to Fade to Black, I informed him that it was from a b minor scale and began to teach him the scale so he could improvise and write his own solo if he wanted. He told me to just teach him the solo. At the end of the day, he is the customer.

My advice to an aspiring guitar player is to find a teacher that will teach you what you want to learn...and that should be how to play music, not just how to play guitar. If he or she won't do that, move on. There are a lot of us out there.

I do have a few openings...

  2. I sound the same regardless of the string gauge or bass that I use. Active does add something. I read that on the RTB tour Geddy was using the same rig he had been using for years. It must have been the production and not the bass. Trevor Jones made a Wal sound massive.
  3. Most of Roll the Bones and most of Presto but if I had to pick one, Superconductor. I still remember watching them play Xanadu on the RTB tour and blasting into that piece of excrement halfway through. Superconductor, by a country mile.

  4. It was also the name of Steinbeck's RV.

Cool, I didn't know Steinbeck was a Rush fan. ;)

    excellent !

I was thinking the same thing!

  5. Mic, I am not trying to be a dick. I just love this album so much. Everyone has the right to their opinion. I respect that. I just love to argue over greatness. RULE

"HYF" RULES!!! I will say that the boys overplayed "Force Ten" over several of their tours. It drove me nuts. Alas "HYF is brilliant like the North Star.

I think you misunderstood me. This album is in my top 3. It always has been. I just thought it should have a deeper sound.

I'm sorry Mic. I did misunderstand you. No worried. It's in my Top 3 too at the moment.

    1. Hemispheres (Will always be my number one)

    2. Grace Under Pressure

    3. Hold Your Fire

If you replace Grace Under Pressure with Signals, you have my top 3. Grace is up there for me.

  7. Geddy's sound on his Wal bass gets a lot of flak around here...from me as well. I listened to this album today and while I have always thought this was his most creative effort for bass lines, today was the first time I listened to the sound to consider why I always criticized the sound of his bass.

I don't think it's his fault. The production those days (late 80s) was very bright in the bass department. His sound is different from the Rick, but it's not the fault of the bass. He is playing in a very staccato style. This changed halfway through Presto. This was before he started strumming.

Anyway, I think the bass would have sounded that way had he used a jazz, the Rick, the Steinberger, or whatever. I can get a similar sound on my jazz and my modulus. I just wish I could play and write like him.
