I know it's not a restore back to 1981 job, but I just love the tone this guitar had on the ESL video.

The clean sound was so good yet it had the perfect amount of crunch/balls too. Very well balanced.

I can't tell in the video if that was the gibby pickup or the BL. I kinda think it was the gibby. Was it the Super Distortion one from the HRF series or one like the ES355 I wonder? Anyone know for sure?

    2.gif

Do you think what you might've been hearing is one amp set to clean, and another amp set to dirty? Alex is known to do that in the past.

  2. I know we've talked a little about this before, but-

I just got through watching the documentary on 2112 and Moving Pictures. I was really intrigued watching Terry Brown push some buttons on the mix and hearing him play the isolated tracks.

It got me thinking - It shouldn't be that hard for them to release the albums now days digitally with separate mixes. That would allow the regular joe schmoe to weed them out and have as much fun with it as he wishes.

Anyone can pretty much have a mixing console, am I right? Right on their home computer? Isn't there more sophisticated software now that basically kills those big ole mixing boards? I know that Audacity allows you to mix tracks and such, but I don't think it's proably that sophisticated.

My god what a treat that would be for me. I would just kill to hear Alex's isolated guitar on Hemispheres.

What's it going to take to get them to release all that? Do you think it's as simple as I imagined? Are we going to have to start a petition?

I'd probably take his Great White Signature Aurora. It would be hard to pass up the Howard Roberts Fusion, though...... biggrin.gif

Oh, of course the Great White! How could I forget. What a lovely sounding guitar. Aren't you glad you own one just like it? What a lovely sounding guitar, and totally comfortable to play, too!

  4. Gotta say that my favorite Hentor was Big Al's red one with the mirror pick guard that was shown in the Distant Early Warning video.

Freddy are you making those red ones too, or are you just making the one Hentor? In what way is the one you have better than the red one?

Neil is in too deep with DW to switch now but IMO all the records he has recorded with DW drums don't compare sonically with his past kits. He will never switch at this point though. I miss the excitement of those Ludwig drums.

Totally agree. Loved the Ludwigs. But the point you bring up about Neil being in too deep with DW... That bothers me.

I know in the past neither of these guys felt comfortable doing endorsement deals. Now look what they have done. I hate the fact that Alex has (or had) his name bound to a contract with Gibson. I guess its all about the money.

Interesting notion but I only see it happening with a different producer.

True that. I guess one thing might be is that I sort of miss any simplicity that they use to have recorded. 1974-76 they sounded like a 3 or 4 man band. 1977-1982 they sounded like they were a 5 man band. 1984-1996 they sounded like they were an 8 man band. 2002-present they sound like they're a 20 man band. At least to my ears.

Rush is toooo complicated nowdays, too much noise and overdubs. Maybe that's just my taste. I still love it nonetheless though.

  7. Gotta say I love the new album first. Another amazing brilliant piece of work as always. All the songs are so stuck in my head.

Now I just want to see what people think about the instruments they use to record with. To me, Rush has always been about change and it's always exciting to wonder how each next album is going to sound overall - meaning the tone of the guitars and Alex's effects.

I'm certainly not knocking any of their choices for equipment. Geddy Lee's Fender Jazz has been around for so long it's become his trademark sound. Alex has been using Gibson for awhile now too, and Hughes and Kettner Amps. The tones are awesome, it's totally Rush.

I guess what I'm trying to say that in the 70's and 80's, 90's too each album had an overall different sound. To me, Clockwork Angels sounds so much like Snakes and Arrows. Vapor Trails might be thrown into that mix too. It's like they keep using the same near settings, equipment, etc to record with on the last few albums. I read an interview back somewhere that Alex mentioned that he's used his TC electronics effects (chorus, etc.) for years now.

I for one would love to see a big change in the overall sound of the next album. Different amps, different guitars and effects brands... Geddy's voice can stay though.

Rush has always been about change and experimenting, I would like to see them challenge themselves on what they can get something else to sound like.

Anyone else think the same thing or am I nuts?

  8. QUOTE (CygnusX-1Bk2 @ Mar 8 2012, 03:45 PM)
I find this especially true with Fender. When comparing Strats recently with another friend he asked me if it was "ok" to get a Mexican Strat. I asked him if it played well and sounded good to which he replied "yes." So we went to the store together and played it next to 2 different American Strats, an American Standard and an SRV custom shop. The SRV may have been the overall better instrument, but we both liked the qualities of the Mexi as much or better. It was clearly a better piece than the American Standard.

Gibson does have a nice warranty coverage period on their guitars. However, on the warranty card it states that finish cracks are not covered under warranty.

That's bullshit. Why wouldn't they want to guarantee their work in that respect.

I also have a AL Les Paul Axcess. I really like that thing. I have no issues with that as of yet. It looks like it's going to hold up to be good quality. I have to say I commend Gibson on their fix for the piezo bleed. They took that seriously.

Just out of curiosity, may I ask you to detail a little more about why the Mexi was better? Did the other guitars have noticeable flaws? Or was it the sound? In what way can you describe how it sounded better?

I used to have a mexi Strat and I wish I had kept it, because I thought it was a quality guitar.

  9. Gibson sucks. Or did I just get a bad guitar? I really regret buying my AL ES-355. It developed finish cracks on the headstock around the pearl and around the tuner pegs without any provacation on my part. However, I heard that finish cracking on the headstocks of the AL 355's were a common thing.

It also got finish cracks on the side of the binding at some of the frets.

What is their deal? Is Gibson like Harley Davidson, producing shit motorcycles and guitars that are overpriced and hardly worth the money they charge?

Is it all about the name, dumb people like me buy the hot brand name that is Gibson and expect it to be the best thing you can buy? I guess they can charge those ridiculous prices because the demand is there. Is there a lot of stupid people out there?

How about the F holes on those? Were they all like mine and rough around the inside on the top? Why couldn't they finish the sides of the F holes? Are all 335's, 355's like that? That makes it look like shit IMO.

I think Gibson should fire whoever is in charge of quality control.

I could've cared less about the volute thing too. That didn't bother me at all.

    Your thoughts please.

    Thanks

Had you asked me before S&A I would have said the 355 but now I may go with the Les Paul he used for most of the S&A show. It has the prettiest inlay I've seen on a Standard as well as a beautiful top. Next in line would be the 1275.

Are you talkin bout the LP Axcess? Post a picture with the guitar and inlay you speak of!

  11. I think I read somewhere that Alex on Limelight/Moving Pictures recorded with a single coil strat.

    yes? no?

The opening riff is powerful and punchy. It seems more humbucker to me. I can hear the single coil for sure though in the chorus part of the song.

I've been tryin to nail that tone in Pod Farm, but for me it's like impossible, at least with the equipment Pod Farm has.

z7shysterical.gif Oh, the HORROR! My god, someone get him a drink and a sedative, because the stress of having to read...

Leave. Seriously. Go back to where you went last time you disappeared. You're a troll, and not even a particularly good one. Nobody is forcing you to read TRF, nobody is forcing you to put up with us members who like their stuff post-Moving Pictures.

So, get the fk out. You have no reason to stay here, and by doing so, you only prove with each post that you are a troll and that you're only here to sow discontent and discord.

I know this is a personal shot and if the mods want to put me in time out for it (after Gemini reads it, preferably) then so be it. Someone has to talk straight to this douchebag. I'm not the only one sick of his crap. [/quote]

I agree. Please leave. Why hang around here if it's known that most people don't like you?

With you, it's the same old BS. You keep bringing this crap up over and over. Do you know what beating a dead horse is?

We don't like you because it's plain obvious that your goal is to stir up the shit. You will deny it, but everyone knows this. It's obvious and plain as day. Seek some troll counseling. You're giving yourself away too easy.

Go check out the Van Halen boards if you haven't already. I'm sure you can get things rolling your way if you start the Roth/Hagar thing.

    And don't come back.

Sounds pretty good man. Good tone, and all the chords look right. But you gotta start tapping your foot. Noticed this in your other video as well.

    I like the dog.

The tone is very good. You missed a bit of the descending run with the drums and bass coming out of the intro. That's about as far as I got with this one but I watched a good deal of SDT.

Music is about conveying emotion. It's one thing to be able to play "all those notes" but the feel is extremely important. Not sure that just tapping one's foot is the only thing that will get across the conviction that Alex plays with. Jump around, have fun and FEEL it. Check out Krinkle's bass vids. He's dancing a little and enjoying the music. He plays with a lot of emotion and conviction. If you add that you will take it up more than a notch. Rush music takes a great deal of concentration, but it also requires conviction and emotion.

You are on the path though!

    smile.gif

    Agreed.

Thanks for everyones comments. And, the feedback. Much appreciated. Sheppy likes it too.

I heard the same thing from one of my friends, saying pretty much the same thing!

I think I may be losing that emotion somewhere while practicing this song for the 1000th time in the last year. I just recently got to where I felt somewhat comfortable in my "technical" abilities.

Which, however leaves me leaving wondering something...

To you proficient or professional musicians:

Is it possible to play with true emotion and feeling to the same old song, even after you've played it so many times?

I've always wondered this about Rush. Alex really shows his feeling show after show after show... I've often wondered: Is he really that into the song? To me, it would seem so boring playing the same old songs all the time. I've always thought his feeling seemed genuine, but I've wondered if any of it was just for show.

    Thoughts?
