It's just compressed. That doesn't mean lower quality, just that it's more efficiently stored. It's lossless compression in the same fashion as winzip or winrar, one difference being that FLAC files can be played directly by media players.

 

Edit: Also compare wav-flac with bmp-png.

Well, it has CONTENT OF EPIC PROPORTIONS some goodie content for aspiring hentor makers, and that was what I was going to ask about, more specifically about the pickup. I know about the L-500 R or L stuff already, but there's one more variable to it. The bill lawrence page lists shielded and unshielded variants of the L-500's. Is it known which one was used? Does it make any major difference?

If you want lossless quality, you should go with FLAC. Think of it as an compressed wav. As far as size goes, my FLAC rip of Moving pictures takes ~246MB. If it had been in wav it would be roughly double the size.

I say go for 256kbps. With 1.5-2 TB HDD's affordably priced(at least in sweden) even flac albums have a hard time to dent free space left.

I have a sort of related question - do anyone here know how the hentor's were wired? Did he have one pickup per switch position, so to speak?

I have a question about a bill lawrence pickup i saw on a online store. It says that it is a "Bill Lawrence L-500 Neck", and nothing more. The only L-500's I can find is L-500C/R/L/XL. What is this? Just a standard L-500 without a letter indicating what type it is?
