  1. The word "great" is subjective. As an equalizer and a common denominator, I'd suggest we use the dictionary definition of "great". Great - of an extent, amount, or intensity considerably above the normal or average. If that's the definition, I'll take Clockwork Angels.
  2. I agree. And I think that means Geddy & Alex would have to change their style a bit. This isn't out of the question IMHO as they've constantly evolved through the years. What that style is I have no idea as I'm neither Geddy nor Alex of course. I think that the physical challenges that Neil faces in order to play Rush music are greater than those of Ged and Al. His playing style has to be incredibly demanding and I think that hearing him play Rush songs in a modified way wouldn't be something that I'd enjoy as much as I enjoy them being played the way they were performed and recorded....which is what hooked me in the first place.
  3. Alex has a tendency to be a bit more of an optimist I think. While I respect McCartney for what he's doing at 75, the demands of what and how he plays is quite different from the demands that Rush's music imposes on them. It's not really an apples to apples comparison.
  4. Neil said it best when he said that facing the prospect of diminishing skills was what he couldn't deal with. It could be argued that even with diminishing skills, each of them are more proficient musicians than most. However, I personally wouldn't want to see them playing well below their peak. I'd much rather see them pack it in too early rather than too late.
  5. 20-30 shows/at 77..that's impressive.. Good for him! I think that some artists can pull that off based on the degree to which they play now vs how they played in their prime. The difficulty for aging artists who played aggressively and energetically in their prime is that it's difficult if not impossible to sustain that style of play in the twilight of their careers. All I know is I'd rather not see Rush playing live at that point. Having thought about it for a while now, I'd rather see them pack it in a year or two too early rather than a year or two too late.
  6. Billy primarily does the residence.. On occasion goes out to play gigs... I think he's playing some stadiums this summer. Being 68 and playing his show live has to be very difficult. He seems to have added a fair bit of weight (no judging here) since I saw him 3 years ago, so that could tax his energy too.
  7. He does have a residency there. But in this gig, he was off. Seemed to pause longer between songs..was looking over lists of tunes as he did. Made references to having more and more "senior moments". Hey, we all do. We all age and once we reach that age, it's expected that we're not as sharp and energetic as we once were. It was just hard seeing Billy Joel on stage that way.
  8. He was an incredible live performer then...and in my opinion, was a different live performer but still really good even a few years back. Maybe his recent show was an off night, but he literally seemed like a shell of his usual self
  9. Billy writes a fair bit of music these days, but it's all classical, which in itself is interesting
  10. Not sure whether it's age or whether older artists just get tired of their own material. 'ugh not this same f***ing song again...for the 100,000th time.' I've heard Billy talk about the whole "omg, this same old song again" issue.. He spoke of it during his inside the actors studio interview. But this was different. He looked physically uncomfortable... So tired...I'm not one to judge but he looks so much heavier than even a few years ago....maybe that's a factor for him?
  11. Seeing Billy Joel with so little energy was tough to watch...thankfully, his band is really solid.
  12. I know...but it's a risk...the thought of seeing/hearing them laboring noticeably, in my opinion, is not worth it. If they never play live again, I'll have VERY fond memories
  13. Having seen Billy Joel this week at Madison Square Garden, it got me thinking about Rush. Billy's band sounded great, Billy's voice was really good, and it was an enjoyable set list....but in truth, I think I'd have rather remembered him from the last time I saw him...several years back. He looked really tired this week and lacked the energy and enthusiasm that was a trademark of his live shows. I almost felt a bit bad for him... It got me thinking about Rush, and if heaven forbid they ever seemed as sluggish as Billy did, I'd feel awful about witnessing it. I have a new appreciation for the courage it takes to go out at or near your peak. Best wishes to the guys for a fulfilling retirement.
  14. I'm assuming this is an economics\funding issue. Outsourcing a vendor that provides a product or service must have a cost to it..and if there isn't a cost, then it's presence is usually funded by advertisers... As a free forum, with no advertising on it, I accept there have to be limitations.

    Thx for the update...
  16. It does feel odd..but looks like it's unavoidable for now.. Hope it comes back to life.

    Chat room...

This may have been brought up previously, and my guess is I missed it. But on the off chance it hasn't been brought up, what happened to chat room?
  18. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/capybara-triplets-named-after-rush-1.4176752 It wasn't even close. :-)
  19. It's a forum, so no harm beating a dead horse I suppose... But if we're doing so, I wonder if its best to do it in existing threads?
  20. Which album to buy next depends largely on what you'd be hoping for. If you like one album from your current collection more than others, and are hoping that your next album purchased will resemble your current fave, then that will help dictate your choice. Likewise, if you're hoping a for a new listening experience, that will dictate your choice.
  21. Original release, if for no other reason than the brief bass solo was more explosive.
