  1. ....ending to Closer to the Heart? Has this been done? Hope not, but oh well... I am so terribly bored with this song. I was hoping they had retired it forever. I was wrong and I don't know what I was thinking. When I saw it on Rush in Rio, I thought it was such a waste of space on a live album that was probably one of their best tours. I know they were doing it for the fans in Brazil but come on. They didn't even change it up like they did during the T4E tour. So I'm at the Chicago show a couple of weeks ago and I already know the setlist. C2TH is coming up so we decide to get a drink. I could've kicked myself. I'm listening to the song from the beer garden waiting for it to end and then it happened. They changed it up and totally rewrote a new ending to the song and it sounded GREAT. I should have known. I took off running back to my seat but it was too late. I missed it. I had already been kicking myself all night because I thought I was so disappointed in the setlist. It was a great show. Even the songs I wasn't looking that forward to were blowing me away. Why would C2TH be any different? That's what I get for doubting them I guess. We had great seats too. I heard it but I didn't see it like I should have. Does anyone get what I'm saying? I mean how often do they do that shit? Those are the moments you don't want to miss. I guess in my mind, I was expecting another Rio performance. Sure, I'll see it on the DVD but I didn't see it when I was THERE. Damn it! I guess you can never really plan out when to go get a beer with these guys. Oh well... I love this band. So what did you guys think about the new Closer to the Heart?
  2. 1987's Predator was a sci-fi classic IMO. I remember I was so excited when Predator 2 came out. I went to see it at the theater with some friends and was just crushed. I felt the same way when I saw Alien 3 and Terminator: Rise of the Machines. Anything after Predator, T2 and Aliens is schlock. I don't even consider them part of the series. These were great movies and ones I loved as a kid and still do. So I see that Robert Rodriguez is presenting the new Predators film a couple of months ago. Nimrod Atall to direct. Could this be something to look forward too? I've been disappointed so much lately. Do I need to mention Terminator:Salvation? A good movie, but nothing close to what I expected. If you're going to make a sequel, make one that's worthy of the original. There will never be another ALIENS, Terminator, and Predator (among others) obviously. But I'm starting to get sucked into this shit again and getting my hopes up. I'm really starting to think Predators might be the real deal. Maybe. Haven't seen it yet but I plan to soon. The reviews are sounding promising. Anyone have any input into this? I apologize if my thread opener sounds choppy and poorly written like the sequels to the films I mentioned earlier but I'm doing three different things at once right now. Drinking scotch is one of those things. You guys are smart and I'm sure you know where I'm coming from. I've been here long enough to know that. Now please excuse me. Kourtney and Khloe are attempting to take Miami right now and I have to see the new episode. Kidding....
  3. QUOTE (Supersyl @ Jul 19 2010, 12:01 AM) Yes that was me. At the ACC last night I kept a close eye on Neil (I'm a drummer who knows every Rush song, well...almost!...Not much of S&A) and you can see how Neil just doesn't play like he did before the "Break" (1997/2002). He cuts corners on most of his classic drumfills... I don't know if all that Jazz phase he's been into has screwed up his playing, or his desire to recreate note for note all his classic drum fills is gone, or if it's his age but everything seems simplified to me... (A trained eye and ear)... But maybe he just doesn't "Know" his own stuff anymore.... Geddy was so awesome last night (His bass sound was the best since the '80's!! Red Barchetta sounded like the good ol' days) and he keeps getting better and better and he seems so loose on the bass, and just jamming along.... Neil to me seems like he's struggling a bit.... I'm not criticizing, but it's my honest observation..... He said in an interview this week that he had written on his Website about "never before played songs" they were rehearsing and that The Camera Eye was one of them, until a fan pointed out that it wasn't the case, and Neil mentions that he had forgotten that they had played it on the MP Tour.... Neil seems to forget that they also played it on the Signals tour since I was there myself to witness it at my very first Rush concert on April 8 1983 at the Montreal Forum and I have the video boot to prove it to him!! Neil seems to be focused on too many drumming ventures, and having Hot Rod drumkits built for his viewing pleasure... Maybe he should focus more on learning his parts... I saw them July 5th in Chicago. I'm not a drummer but I know this band and I have to agree with you a little bit. Something is up with Neil. There were some parts of the show where he blew me away and there were other parts where he did seem to be "cutting corners" or the fills seemed a bit slower than usual. Very noticable at times but nothing that made me think he was just going through the motions either. He is a different drummer now. Like he said in the documentary. "There is a different clock at work." I'm guessing that's what we're hearing. He was still phenomenal. Ferocious at times even. I'm guessing that when he incorporates this new style into the songs we haven't heard for awhile, it sounds so obvious to us that it would seem like he was confused or struggling when in fact, that's just not the case what-so-ever. That's just my "theory" I guess, but I totally get what you're saying. Anyway... The show was outstanding. Ged and Alex were dead on. You could tell the whole band were having a great time. That's what will make it one of the most memorable for me. They were smiling and goofing off the whole show. Ged was SHREDDING that bass. He was going off during songs where he shouldn't have been going off. I had to travel to Chicago and believe me, I DID NOT want to travel at all but I'm thinking about getting tickets to the Columbus, OH show if that tells you anything.

So after I accept Geddy's invitation, I'll walk up the stairs with him and his wife. He will swing open the magnificent, double doors that enter into a room that eerily resembles the bedroom of Ming the Merciless from the movie Flash Gordon. (the one Queen did the soundtrack too) Ged and his wife would take off running and dive onto the gigantic, circular bed covered in the finest satin. Ged's wife will then pull out a mirror from behind one of the curtains at the head of the bed. Atop the mirror, is a gigantic mound of the purest Columbian cocaine I have ever seen. It reminds me of Mt. St. Helens. (after it erupted) After we get higher than Cygnus, Ged gets up from the bed and walks to the other side of the room to a gigantic curtain. He locks eyes with me and smiles. Then he leaps into a pirouette that Baryshnikov would be envious of. As he lands, he tears open the curtain! I couldnt believe my eyes. It was the arcade game 'CENTIPEDE". It was just like I remembered. The last time I had seen or even played one was in a Pizza Hut in 1984. My god! Ged told me I could play all I wanted and for FREE! As I started my first game, a midget with a donkey entered the room. I remembered Geddy roaring like a viking as he dragged his wife by the hair into the other room. He had a rubber spatula in his other hand. The midget and donkey followed. I never saw them again. I didn't beat Ged's high score either. Maybe next time...... Brilliant!!! Although I would have chosen Galaga or Tetris... much better games IMO. Thanks Ya Big Tree. I don't know what I was thinking. I should have put you in my fantasy. That would have been HOT! So it would have been.. me, you and Geddy? Interesting... No. Ged and his wife went off with the midget, donkey, and rubber spatula. We would have stayed in the bedroom. Oh my god! Hey we can invite Alex over then! Hopefully he brings some pizza and an X Box 360! As soon as Alex would show up, you'd kick me out of the room. But seriously, I want you all to myself.
  5. When the tour was first announced, everyone was talking about the setlist. One of the songs I was hoping would be dropped this time around was TSOR and then the setlist was revealed. TSOR was to be the opener. I was thinking to myself, "That sucks...." But when the opening video started, I totally forgot about the shitty opener. I saw Alex hanging back at the side of the stage watching the video. He had a smile on his face and laughing. Like he was watching it for the first time. I was wrong. It was one of the best openers I had ever witnessed. The entire show was awesome. The guys were in great moods and you could tell they were having a blast. When you're sitting at home looking at the setlist on your laptop, you just seem to piss and moan about it. But when you're actually there, all that shit goes right out the window. I was disgusted with the setlist when I first saw it. I was bitching about EVERYTHING. But when the show was over, I can honestly say it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. All around. I guess that's just the magic of seeing them live. I seem to forget how awesome it is when I don't see them for a couple of years. I'm never going to bitch about the setlist again.

  8. QUOTE (red sector animal @ Jul 1 2010, 10:41 PM) Quit freakin wasting my time, moron. Kidding. I can relate. It's a cool part. But I like when they change stuff up a bit too... so it's not like Rush karaoke with the SoH CD playing on the PA. I guess. I'm going to miss it though. They should have kept it the same. If they're going to change it up, change up a song they play all the time. Still cant wait to hear it! MARATHON R.I.P. 1986-1990

  10. QUOTE (The K Man @ Jul 1 2010, 09:40 PM) Eh, it sounds like they did the extended ending (that you hear on PoW as it fades out), but didn't do the very end like on ASOH where the keys do a little lead into that cymbal thing. They still played most of the original live ending. I understand that part but why? That ending is epic. Why cut out the thirty or so seconds it would have took to finish it out like they always did? I'm asking if anyone has an answer to that question. I just dont get it. I've been waiting for this song to come back for 20 years and I'm not complaining. I'm just curious as to WHY? I know this probably sounds ridiculous to some, but if you're a fan of this song, then you're going to know exactly what I'm getting at. Even if you fans don't have an answer, at least acknowledge where I'm coming from so I don't feel like an idiot that's wasting people's time.
  11. QUOTE (trenken @ Jul 1 2010, 12:46 PM) QUOTE (Andrew1 @ Jul 1 2010, 01:23 AM) Marathon. One of my favorites and a song I've been waiting for them to bring back since Presto. I was checking out it's "return" on YouTube from opening night. Sounded great but they cut it short. About forty seconds short, roughly. You know that bad ass ending they do on A Show Of Hands? Where Neil right at the end hits the cymbal....TSSH,TSSH,TSSH... And ged raises his fist, and punches along with it at 6:01? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rP58U_R3gK0 and Time Machine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuuRxywEelU ....if you want to compare the two. It's only about 30 - 40 seconds. If that even... Why the hell would they cut that killer ending out? Don't get me wrong. I'm thrilled they brought back 'Marathon'. It really isn't even a big deal but I was kind of let down. Does anyone else feel the same way? Anyone? Is 'TSSH' a good cymbal sound? You see this a lot in most modern Rush tour. Often I think this has to do with the fact that Neil doesnt know his own parts as well as we do from listening to the albums so many times, and watching all their old videos. He doesnt listen to their own music, all of them have talked about this, except right before a tour, so he just isnt as familiar with all these little things like you are. I notice he constantly plays parts wrong, some of it may be on purpose, and ill be other parts he just doesnt know like he used to. When he was younger his fills and whatnot were always nailed to a tee, its different now, probably isnt wanting to put in as much effort learning every last part of every song. So what you're saying is that they decided to cut out that climactic ending of 'Marathon' because Neil is lazy and incapable? Anyone else? Please.......

Both videos are almost identical in length. Did you notice the extended jam at 4:20 on the current arrangement? That was kinda cool! Yes. I did notice that. Very cool. Maybe they just wanted to change it up a little bit and that took the place of the ending. Regardless, I still can't understand why the wouldn't just finish it out like before. It's a great part. Still can't wait to hear it in four days....

  14. QUOTE (ReRushed @ Jul 1 2010, 01:00 AM) QUOTE (ReflectedLight @ Jul 1 2010, 12:59 AM) i can't wait for them to use "revamped setlist" for the next tour. They'll be touring behind a new album on the next tour. I'm sure a lot of us will be complaining about them playing too many songs from Clockwork Angels! Exactly. I remember the times when I would go to a Rush show not having any idea what they would be playing. I don't EVER remember bitching about the setlist or saying they should have played this instead of that. It was always a great experience. If I ever did find something to piss and moan about, it was totally forgotten when the next song started. I never even looked at the setlists prior to S&A. I should have never started. I totally understand why people get upset if they're revealed a SPOILER. It robs you of something. I'll never stop going to see Rush. Regardless of what they play. I have noticed though that the shows aren't like they used to be if I know what they're playing beforehand. I'm going to see a counselor. I need to develop some self-control.
  15. QUOTE (Checkster2112 @ Jul 1 2010, 01:22 AM) Its a decent song IMO but I just don't understand why that would be what they chose out of an album full of great tunes. I'd have killed for Animate. Those were exactly my same thoughts earlier in this thread. I agree.
  16. QUOTE (bigalfan @ Jun 30 2010, 11:42 AM) After reading some of the negative comments about the setlist...I cracked. I figured, "Well, if it sucks that bad - I guess I need to find out and gear myself up for it." To tell the truth, I'm glad I did. It's not THAT bad! Yes, Presto is a WHAT? and Overture/Temples...AGAIN!!!??? But, it could be MUCH worse and, as an Alex fan - I get three of his best solos (Freewill, LVS, WM) in one gig...I'm diggin' that! I've never heard Marathon live (and of the synth stuff, that's one of the better ones, imo) - looking forward to Camera Eye and glad they kept Stick it Out in! Also looking forward to Faithless live and think it falls in a great spot in the list (thank you it wasn't, Larger Bowl). SO, all-in-all - and along with the amazing set/show...I'm really looking forward to tomorrow night! I DO wish JL would've been left in the setlist. I was really looking forward to hearing, "The clouds prepare for battle..." in the open air...but, oh well... HEY - it's !!! I totally agree with you dude. I was excited about 'Jacob's Ladder' too. That was my biggest issue with the setlist. (because it was expected) I thought it was a sure thing when Alex said they were doing it. I'm sure the band knows that people were really looking forward to JL. I'm sure we'll see it on the next tour. I was expecting some off-the-wall, crazy setlist when the Time Machine Tour was announced. Not so. It turned out to be pretty standard. It is what it is and from now on, I'm not going to expect anything else. No more hoping for 'The Necromancer', 'War Paint', 'The Body Electric', 'Double Agent', or whatever else my favorite song is that week. There are 3 or 4 new songs that I thought were strange picks and should have been swapped with something else, but what else is new? The songs like you mentioned that we've seen over and over? Same shit. I never even looked at the setlists prior to S&A. I wish I would have never started because it never would have been an issue. I truly know why some people get so upset when someone mentions a SPOILER. It's way too stressful. Seriously... Bottom line is that it's Rush live. I've never walked away from a show disappointed. I'm glad I was there and it's a great experience every time. Regardless of what they played...
  17. QUOTE (rushfan1970 @ Jun 29 2010, 11:04 PM) How come Rush does not come to Montreal? This is the first time in their history they do not come to Montreal. Yet they have no reason to do so, they have always had great crowds in Montreal. I just don't understand. I know exactly how you feel. Trust me. I live near Indianapolis, Indiana and I did some researach and found out the same thing you did. This is the first time in Rush history that they passed us up too. When I saw that they weren't stopping here on this tour, I was shocked and very pissed off. WHY??? They always have great crowds here too. REVENUE. That's what I was told from a very reliable source here on the Forum. Is that 100% accurate? Your guess is as good as mine. I hate to say that because so many others have been ranting lately about the band only in it for the money anymore. I totally disagree with that, but there you go. That's all I know. So I guess Wichita, Kansas generates greater revenue than Montreal and Indianapolis. Who knew?! I really wasn't wanting to travel this time around, but I WILL be going to Chicago, July 5th. Sure, I was irritated when the tour dates were released but I got over that shit real quick.
  18. I think it's a great song and I like it a lot but there are so many other songs that I would rather hear in it's place. I thought it was a VERY peculiar selection. If a source told me that a song from 'Counterparts' would be played on this tour, I would have bet the house on 'Animate'. 'Stick It Out'? No way. When I first saw it on the setlist, I thought it was a hoax. It's all good though.

  20. QUOTE (DetachedandSubdivided @ Jun 30 2010, 01:43 PM) My guess too that they'll play it next year. Just a guess, though. And I'll be crossing my fingers until then. I'm thinking the same thing. I would bet that they'll play it on the next tour. I was disappointed when I saw that it wasn't on the setlist, but thats because I expected it. I am curious as to what happened to it though. It sounded like a sure thing coming from Alex.

I've always wanted to try it out though. I think I like it. Alex rocks..... The sheep could represent fans that are being herded by RIAB Of course! I thought the sheep represented K-Y jelly, rubber gloves, peanut butter and sorority girls born in April.... a scene from Revenge Of The Nerds comes to mind as well. Hmmmmm...........
  24. QUOTE (amish_ashaman @ Jun 29 2010, 03:18 AM) QUOTE (theworkingman @ Jun 29 2010, 02:08 AM) Does this mean they aren't coming out on a Delorean? Anybody need an extra ticket? Aw, dude, how cool would that be? It wouldn't be cool at all. 1985....Back To The Future/Michael J. Fox/ 2010....Michael J. Fox/Parkinson's disease/ You have to associate one with the other. Back To The Future and Michael J. Fox... I love both, but that would cast a very dark cloud over a Rush show. For me anyway..... If he wasn't afflicted with that disease, it would be a great idea. But it would just turn out being a shitty reminder....
