  1. Midnight Oil, hands down.

Also my #1 favorite band, tied with DT.

Goose, the Oils are making a big announcement tomorrow. People think it's going to be their 2017 tour schedule but I'm really hoping for news of a new album too!

    Oiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiills!!

I just was notified of that as well.

Toronto's the closest to me. A five hour drive for the Oils? Possibly the last time ever?

I need to make it happen.

Lucky to see them in Lincoln in the early 90's.

    Finger's crossed.

I get a home show (more or less), I'll be there!

I can take my 15 year old with me now, who was still in the womb the last time I saw them.

Best of all is she knows all of their songs and will be just as psyched to hear Lucky Country or No Time For Games as Beds are Burning.

It's amazing the scope of this tour, wow, it's the largest since Blue Sky Mining I think,

They're playing literally everywhere this year.

Not sure how good they are for lyric writing.

Which is a larger part of what's wrong with music today.

    .. and post 1985 Rush

I'm not against using electronic percussion if it is an accompaniment to an acoustic set. But just programmable drum machines and no one actually playing any instruments is my point.

    :haz:

My first keyboard ever, a small white casio PT-10 I think, used to make this EXACT same beat lol.

  3. I like them all. Not sure Primus is funky, regardless of Claypool's expertise.

I think Patton's talent is unassailable, and out of all his bands I think there's gotta be something for most people somewhere.

Chili's were far better early on, I feel they copied themselves an awful lot later on. In fairness I haven't listened to their later albums, the hits that sound like their previous hit made me lose interest. Could be my fault, maybe they're as creative as ever overall.

Rage I love because I'm such a lefty, and Morello is such an interesting guitar player.

    So favorite?

    Probably Primus.

Apparently this will be quite unpopular in here.

    Primus sucks!

    Goose, you're a bastard!

  4. PRIMUS

No doubt about it, they were doing crazy different music back when nobody else was. And they've always stayed true to themselves (not like those sell outs RHCP whose last 8 albums are all the same, even though Flea is the bomb).

I'd say Primus also has arguably the best bassist and drummer of all these guys.

And guys, I mean c'mon, look at this shit!

  5. It strikes me as being similar to those who say Geddy's vocals are weak, or Jon Anderson's etc etc. Ross brings something a little different to the band than your usual type of singer would, IMO, and is one of the defining parts of their sound. They wouldn't be the same without him, and that would be a bad thing.

Oh I don't know if anybody's ever said that Geddy had weak vocals while in his prime.

High-pitched vocals, sure, but loaded with tons of BALLS.

Nobody can touch Geddy's vocals in his prime IMO. And aside from that Lotus Land singer, nobody sounds like him either.

  6. Theres some really great stuff on BC but it's overwrought with stuff i just HATE.

    Wither

    The Best of times

    Count of Tuscany

Wait... this is the stuff you hate?!

Tell me I've got that backward.

yup. i really don't like those songs at all.

Tuscany has some ok moments but i feel it's long for long's sake.

    Mick

I think it's fun. Which makes up for it being so derivative. The same I cannot say about Octavarium. Awful exercise in self indulgence.

nope Octavarium the song is AMAZING.

    The album is iffy.

    Mick

Octavarium the song is probably a top 3 DT song for almost everybody.

  7. My issue with Count Of Tuscany is the same as Mick's. Just always felt it was long just for the sake of it. I like the song but it would be better if they trimmed the fat off it. I feel the same way about Best Of Times. Don't really care for that song as a whole though.

Nightmare To Remember, Rite Of Passage and Shattered Fortress are far and way the best songs on the album.

TCoT is awesome BUT it would be way better if they cut out the 5 minute part where he's in the cellar with all the RARE VINTAGE / Xanadu part 2 bit.

Nightmare to Remember is only hampered by the same- the last 2 minutes or so could be cut off and it'd be a much better song for it.

I'm with you on Rite of Passage, that's a good one.

  8. Listened to Systematic Chaos again today. I love how clear each instrument is on this album!!! I get why people criticize it, but I can´t help but feel that a lot of people unfairly judge this album. Some of the songs are way too long and overbearing, but once you spend time absorbing them and knowing little details here and there, listening to the whole thing is a rewarding experience. It´s the last album where I feel Portnoy pushed his boundaries as a drummer. Black Clouds is a great album too, but in my opinion he didn´t bring much to the table drum-wise on that album.

Though this isn't my favorite DT album it does have one of my favorite songs of theirs (In the Presence of Enemies 1 & 2). Runner up is The Dark Eternal Night. The rest is ehhh.

  9. I have just recently discovered this bands music and its f***ing amazing!

I downloaded "The Mountain" It blew me away.

I just purchased "Affinity" I'm equally impressed.

If you don't know this band, you should!

    Trust Tick. :atickhum:

I've hear the whole Mountain album and it's great. They're like a Jon Anderson-fronted DT or something.

I haven't been able to get into almost anything else they've done though, it's very strange.

  10. I'm not one of those who believe a failed attempt at a reboot or a rekindling hurts a legacy. What Firefly was was great, and if a reboot sucks Firefly still was great.

So in that spirit, I'm all for this.

Getting all parties back would be challenging. How much must Whedon be involved? If he merely must approve cast and writers then I think he could be brought on. Otherwise he certainly has other things to do. He might be afraid to go back after the time that's passed.

Personally I'd want the same writers, and I see no reason not to bring back Nathan. I don't agree that they're too old, just set it later.

The way I see it, none of them are at retirement age, and presumably none of them would have quite Flying.

The trick is new blood. They need new blood with Book gone. They have to cast and write that new blood really well.

I think they can do it.

If it is a reboot, I'm game. The cast has to be great.

Get Maise Williams in a reboot, her sense of humor is perfect. Who else? Chris Pratt- or is that too obvious?

At least 3 of the main cast will be far more expensive than before.

Fillion would be on for less, he's said many many times if he had his druthers he'd start Firefly back up himself.

    AWESOME!

  11. If they're starting Firefly back up you NEED all of the original cast members who are left after Serenity.

Nathan Fillion is 75% of Firefly, you need that guy for sure.

  12. Actually the 1983 Red Rocks version of anything from U2 pretty much kicks ass.

OH I WEEP FOR WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN, U2...

I've loved them till 1985... :sigh:

    Good times...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4sh-02ie7p0

It doesn't help that they retire basically all their awesome old songs really quickly.

How can you have a song like "Like a Song" in your catalog and only play it ONE TIME EVER??

  13. He cemented his legacy as the best ever in my view last night. I'm not a Patriots fan at all really but I know success and excellence when I see it. Kudos to Mr Kraft and his team...

I never saw Unitas play. I watched Joe Montana carve up defenses. I watched Peyton Manning make teams shit their pants during the regular season.

Brady just wins championships. Belichik has much to do with it...but Brady is pulling the trigger. Bottom line: it's very difficult to compare greats. Brady has the numbers to lay claim to the title though.

    PS: Where's Bradshaw? Aikman?

Peyton Manning would have thrown in the towel in the third quarter. He shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as Brady or Montana. You can make Peyton Manning quit.

Eli is a better post season QB than Peyton.

    BY FAR.

Especially considering the teams he was able to beat.

  14. [From espn.com]

A man who bet $5 on a 15-leg parlay card at a William Hill sports book in Nevada needed the New England Patriots to win by more than seven points to win $100,000 on Monday.

Because the Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens by exactly seven, 30-23, the result of the 15th game of the parlay, after the previous 14 had come through, was a push.

William Hill spokesman Michael Grodsky confirmed to ESPN that it was an all-or-nothing parlay card. As such, the push didn't reduce it to winning a 14-leg parlay; it made the entire card worthless.

I would have most probably soiled my pants in royal fashion....... :laughing guy: :laughing guy:

I'd tell Gostowski he'd better watch his back but if he didn't miss the extra point it would've never went into OT in the first place.

  15. Discounting TA.....the mangini era produced 2 of the BEST DT albums in years.

I ADORE turn of Events and the self Titled.

    Mick

The only way I want Portnoy near the band again is if he's brought in to produce Mangini's drum sound next time.

Ego or not, the guy knew how to mix the friggin' drums!
