  1. I was in 8th grade and playing bass in a high school talent show. We had two songs: Breaking the Law and an original tune. During the drum break down in breaking the law I managed to step on my cable and pull it out of the amp jack. Got it all fixed before the next song started but in the chaos, I must have hit the headstock on something and took my E string down a few steps. Started the next song out of tune.

    Oh DUDE I feel ya!

This is one of the things I did before as well, though luckily it was just at a practice and not a show. That's why I always take the cable and kind of wrap it around the guitar strap before plugging it in even now. If somebody steps on the cable, it'll pull at the strap and not at the jack.

  2. ^^^ Ouch.

My band had a big gig, Friday night in our high school auditorium. Big stage, full lighting rig, full house, people actually paying for tickets, the whole deal. As big time as a high school garage band could get.

Someone was nice enough to sneak up onstage and de-tune the D string on my guitar right before show time. Curtain goes up, intro music finishes (Firebird Suite -- fancy!), and I kick off the opening power chords to Boston's "Rock and Roll Band"...but instead of hearing that nice and heavy B-major, we hear a very dissonant BLAGHFRAPPG!!! My first thought was I was playing it wrong, but I wasn't. The guys in the band all gave me the WTF? look, and my look in return was, "I have no f*cking idea."

We got through the song with me trying to retune on the fly. Rest of the show went pretty well, though.

Holy shit, high school is hard enough without SABOTAGE!

  3. Oh it was terrible..

It was back when I was either 19 or 20 (in the early-mid 90s) and we were going to do a gig at a town hall benefit. We practiced for weeks for the show and were really ready for it. Then for whatever reason during the soundcheck I decided to whip out my 6 string bass because A) It was brand new and B) It was very cool-looking and I wanted to show off because I was a young idiot and there were hot chicks there.

    HUGE MISTAKE

I hadn't properly practiced enough with it on the side, and due to my screw ups it also made me screw up many of my vocals where I'd forget lines and etc. On top of that I'd often apologize to whatever semblance of the audience that we had at various points in the show.

After the show, the guitarist's dad told me that you should NEVER apologize to your audience- as not only does it look like amateur hour many people won't notice small mistakes even if you do. The only thing good to come out of that show was this piece of advice, which I still carry with me to this day.

  5. I've been asked by someone I know to ask you lot if you know of anywhere online where you can buy a Counterparts album cover poster, apparently he's looked everywhere and can't find anything.

    Just have one made. :D

Yeah it's a screw in a black box on a blue background, it's not Hugh Syme territory or anything :)

  6. After Moving Pictures, 2112 is the most popular Rush album among general American rock public.

Moving Pictures achieved 4 Platinums, while the second is 2112 and it achieved 3 Platinums in sales in America.

All of their other albums from the classic era achieved at the most one Platinum. Why is 2112 sold better than albums A Farewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Fly by Night or Permanent Waves?

Especially since the only RUSH songs you ever hear on the radio at all are either from MP or PeW.

Not around here. In addition to TS, Limelight, Spirit and Freewill, we get heavy play for Working Man, FBN, CTTH, Trees, Circumstances, Subdivisions and New World Man.

    That's awesome!

I do remember when Counterparts was just coming out they played Stick It Out on alternative stations but this was a LOOOONG time ago.

  7. Ric's are the most polarizing instrument around. Either people love them or hate them. I've had 4 of them over the years and I love the way they look but the ergonomics just don't agree with me. They're just not a comfortable bass to play with that flat body, sharp upper edge where your arm hits it and the neck that doesn't really taper as it goes towards the nut. Plus the bridge is the most worthless piece of crap on an instrument that I've ever seen.

I'm glad you posted on this, I figured you would know about these for sure.

  8. If they were new they weren't 4001's, they were 4003's. Also unless you had a stereo cable plugged into the ric o sound jack you will only utilize one pickup. As far as being uncomfortable, they are an acquired taste for sure. Goes to show that Rics aren't for everyone.

Yes, you're right I just double-checked their online catalog and it looks like all their new Rics are 4003s.

  10. Metallica - not even close.

Don't get me wrong, I own, and really like, some Megadeth albums. However, back in the day, I loved Metallica (including Justice). I dropped off with the Black album, though I can appreciate where they were trying to go (horrible St Anger and all). I feel that last two albums have been somewhat re-invigorating.

Also, for me, one measure of a band is how much of a team effort they are. When I think of Rush, I hear three amazing musical personalities complimenting each other. When Ged did his solo album, it was very interesting and cool, but it most certainly was not Rush. Now, with Metallica, they have had a couple bass players (RIP Cliff), but I believe they have successfully re-inverted themselves. Today, Metallica is made up of very distinct musical personalities that continue to compliment each other and define the Metallica sound. As for Megadeth, who is even in the band now??!? Ellefson left and came back, so many other guitarists, drummers, I couldn't name them all! This is not a sign of a successful band. Mustaine has been successful because of his talent and drive, and Megadeth is his brand, but he has not built a successful band.

    That's a great point.

To me (and probably everyone else) Megadeth is and always will be:

    Mustaine

    Ellefson

    Friedman

    Menza

  11. Hm...well, as I have just gotten into thrash and metal, and as I am just beginning to get into each of the big four, I am starting to filter what I like better than what.

That said, it's becoming apparent to me that my favorite of big four will likely be either Anthrax or Megadeth, with Metallica not far behind, and Slayer just not really being my taste (though not bad).

    So Megadeth.

Try Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer. That's a great album that covers a range of music and isn't all GO GO GO KILL KILL KILL!

  12. EDIT: It was a 4003, not a 4001

To be honest I was not super impressed. I was on vacation this past week and as always I like to go looking to see what's out there in guitar / bass land. At a nearby Sam Ash's they had a whopping THREE new Ric 4003's up on the wall (!!!!) A black, cream, and blue one. Where I live I never even ever see one of these things "in the wild", to put it in perspective. Even with a price tag of just under $2000 I had to give it a try.

Well.. I know these things are revered by everybody and maybe rightfully so but this really didn't DO anything for me when I gave it a shot. I tried the Ric-O-Sound input and yeah it did kind of have that famous buzzy tone that I like but just playing it I wasn't super impressed. Especially for a $2000 instrument. It wasn't all that comfortable to play either. The only thing that really stood out was that it had a ton of sustain.

So I know we all have opinions and etc, but for this particular bass player my small sample with a real Ric I'd have to say I wouldn't recommend it. Sure it looks awesome and sounds pretty decent for some types of music but it didn't give me a lot of good 'feel'. Even my Musicman Ray 34 which is a lower end Stingray seems a lot better and it's less than half of the cost.

I thought I'd post about it here, since you guys actually care about stuff like this :D

Looked like this, but this isn't the actual one:

  13. And.. along with the wins and stats.. he's frigggin 39 years old! With gas left in the tank, by the looks of it.

Manning looked like he had gas left in the tank in 2014, too. Then 2015 happened and even though they won the Super Bowl, that defense won it for them.

Brady's falloff is gonna hit him like a train when it does happen.

One thing though....Brady has not had any major injury to slow him as quickly as Manning. A QB who had issues, injuries, and surgeries especially to his neck which hastened his retirement. I think Brady will hold his own barring any major injury, the Patriots are Still going to be in the run to win it all again.

Well maybe if you don't count that leg injury against KC in the '08 opener that put him on I.R. that season.

Id' say that's a major injury. We went 11-5 and just missed the playoffs that year with Cassel too (another feather in the cap for Bellichick being the GOAT coach).

  14. I guess the reason why this whole thing is so touchy with me is because recently, I was disappointed in a "classic rock cover band" that played at a local nightclub that claimed to do rock music from all decades....I was intrigued and thought that if they did music from all decades, I might see a healthy mix of 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Instead, the band was pretty much an amalgamation of everything I've always thought was wrong with classic rock radio as a whole....The majority of their set was pretty much 70s country rock and 90s grunge with a very tiny amount of 80s rock mixed in (Here I Go Again and Pour Some Sugar On Me, that was it.)

You take minor things like this way too seriously. It's just a cover band. Enjoy the cheap night out.

Oh yeah, it's just an f'n cover band!

Were you expecting music from every single decade ever? They played music from 3 different decades of the modern era. Sounds like they were ok to me. Plus, bar bands play music to out asses in the seats not to play cool deep cuts on,y appreciated by a few. One of the reasons my semi pro days were cut short. I couldn't stomach being forced to play shitty pop songs I didn't like.

    Good for you , man.

I was never semi-pro however when I actually played in real bands in my late teens / early 20s I hated covers with a passion. I would much rather do originals that nobody would know than play "Enter Sandman" or "Would?" again.

One time we did "Thunderkiss '65" though. And that was pretty cool haha.

  15. The Klingons should not have ridges. It's established in the canon.

I never understood that position. For a fan base of such thinkers how can't they grasp that ridges look cool, make the Klingons look more menacing and that prosthetic ridges was just beyond the budget of the original show. It is really that simple.

It's established. It's been referenced on multiple series. If it was consistently ignored there would be no problem, but it hasn't been ignored. Yes, it could be seen as nitpicking, but that's part of the fun of being a fan of the show.

So from that point, an explanation has been made convoluted it may be but ridges were explained. Ridges appear in much more Star Trek than ridgeless Klingons. Ergo ridges should appear in Discovery.

Honestly, at the end of the day, I don't really care. All I am saying, as a Star Trek fan, is that during the Star Trek time period that Discovery is taking place, it's established that Klingons do not have ridges. As convoluted as it seems or is.

It's been established in the canon? I know of no official decree about anything in Star Trek TV shows or films being "canon". With so many time-travelling and alternate universe conflicts, the possibilities for any species - Human, Klingon, etc. - are endless. The only "canon" about Star Trek is that anything goes.

The changes to Klingon anatomy in The Next Generation and other series and films were a great move. They look like a real alien species - not just humans with goatees.

I get it. And I don't disagree. I'm just pointing out that it was explained why the ridges disappeared.

And for the record, sans the animated series, anything on the television shows and the movies is considered canon. I know it's true because I read on the internet and some official Star Trek book now gathering dust on my book shelf.

I have quite a few of those books, and I know what Okudagrams are.

I have the ENT-D blueprint book, the complete DS9 episode behind the scenes guide or whatever it is for all 7 seasons, and "The Klingon Way" which has phrases and etc. in both English and Klingon.

And somewhere I also have the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

It's amazing I'm married and have children when you think about it!

  16. Most bass players I know could care less about chops. They like the groove and the ability to lock in with the drummer. Guys like billy Sheehan , with his solos, are chuckled at. Respected, sure. But no one needs to play the bass like that.

Geddy is a good balance. Melodic lines with just enough chops.

Billy Sheehan does nothing for me at all.

If I want to listen to mega bass virtuoso I'd pick John Myung all day. At least he has control and knows what fits a song when needed:

  17. CBS should've just scrapped Fuller's vision the minute he jumped ship.

That being said, this 'dumpster fire' is nothing compared with the disasters surrounding the leadup to TNG.

I don't know, this is shaping up to be a contender for the worst.

    Already have reformatted Klingons AGAIN.
