  1. It's funny but as somebody who's played basses and etc for 25 years I've never dropped thousands on a single instrument and never will. To me, and especially now, there are way too many great instruments that are affordable vs. super expensive jobs. Case in point: I bought a Musicman Ray34 bass for approx. $700 total and it sounds (to me) just like the Stingray which is more than double that price. Quality too. And some of these not-so super old guitars that people want $10,000 for? Well, I'm not one to immediately get a boner over anything with the "vintage" tag- I mean hell, my crappy old orange BOSS distortion pedal would probably qualify as vintage now and sell for tons hahaha.

  2. Honestly though I think the problem some might have with a lot of the synth stuff listening to it now is how dated some of the sounds themselves are. Take a great song like "Red Tide" and remove the cheesy DAH DAH DAH DAH synths out of the beginning and end (after that awesome piano riff) and the song improves tremendously. Even on an excellent song like Territories some of the samples just don't hold up too well anymore.

  3. Every single Rush documentary, or brief written history of the band glosses over the best period of the band like "meh, it happened. Subdivisions was the big radio hit in the early to mid 80s after Tom Sawyer. Geddy's hair looked like a Davy Crockett hat, Whatever. Now let's talk about how great Counterparts is and how it's superior to every record that came out from 82 to 92."

Hell, even most Rush tribute bands do a very 90s and 70s heavy show and only do like 2-3 synth era songs at the max.

You know what? f**k that. It's time the synth era got the love it deserves from Rush fans. Geddy's bass playing and singing were at it's peak around that period, Geddy was multitasking between two different instruments effortlessly, Alex's chord structure became even more unorthodox and interesting. The music was very similar to the new wave groups of that era, but elevated to a much higher level. It was intricate, palatable, the songs weren't too long or drawn out, it was the perfect era for Rush.

I would rather hear all of Grace Under Pressure or Power Windows in it's entirety than Hemispheres.

Nearly all tribute bands won't touch anything before Signals and many of those stop at Moving Pictures. so as a rule I won't bother with them because that's not exactly my idea of a good time..

I think you mean after signals?

You raise an interesting point about tribute bands. Their reluctance to play the snyth years says something.

Not sure what it is though....

That's it's wicked hard and there's only one Geddy, that's what it says!

  4. Great show, though I've only seen season 1.

Hang in with it. Seasons 3 and 4 are great

    :ebert:

Just finished Season 2's "runner" episode with the lady on the run being phone-filmed by everyone. Very good.

    White Bear.

    Blew my f***in mind.

    Those screams will haunt you!!

  5. Don't know how i missed this the first time it was on, but have just finished series 1 and it is darkly brilliant, worthy of all the praise heaped upon it...the very first episode in particular was fantastically audacious.

Yeah man, that was a hard watch. I went in order, and when that came on me and my wife were all "What the f**k are we watching???!" My favorites so far are White Bear (the runner one), the one where you can review your memories like DVR, the clone one (which was creepy), and the one where the blackmailed kid is running around doing crazy things. NOBODY could have seen that ending coming, no way.

  6. Two things: Outstanding defensive pressure by the Eagles in the first half and in crunch time, and fantastic effort for yards after contact by the Eagles. The Pats simply didn't or couldn't tackle like the needed to.

Goose, I like ya but let's be honest here there was no outstanding defense on either team. They both got lit up. 1 punt total, that has to be a record too.

  7. This whole show is indeed a dumpster fire. I like 3 or 4 characters and most of these episodes are not very good. SMG as Burnham is tough to watch and can't hold a candle to (dare I say it) even Sisko or Janeway.. Season 2 should just be Saru and Stammets flying around, with the MU Georigo in the brig with a dash of ghost of Culbert floating around.
  8. I actually prefer the prequels over the "tweaking" Lucas did to the originals. He probably said to himself: "Wow hey look I have 3 out of 6 shitty Star Wars movies, why not have 6 shitty Star Wars movies!?". Biggest offenders: The new Jabba music video, Superimposing Hayden Wooden Anderson or w/e as a force ghost, Adding a terrible CGI Jabba into a Han Solo scene that should have never been taken off the cutting room floor, Replacing the entire Ewok party scene at the end of Jedi, Vader's "NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" when he tossed Palpatine overboard (that might be the #1 worst change he's made now that I think of it), etc. I'm all for added windows to Cloud City corridors if they have to but those added scenes were TERRIBLE.

  9. Hi guys! I'm not an accomplished drummer by any stretch but I have been playing on and off for many years. Anyhow the other day I bit the bullet and bought a double pedal, which is something I've never owned before. I'm noticing right away that my left foot pedal seems way too "springy", though I'm not sure if that has anything to do with how I'm used to using my foot (on the hi-hat pedal) or if it's that the pedal needs more adjustment. I was able to get a slightly better feel and response by extending the left "marshmallow" so that it'd take a teeny bit more time to strike the bass drum over my right marshmallow but in the process I'm also kicking my own ass and hitting my shin a lot haha. Sorry for this wall of text, there's some sort of formatting issue with this computer right now. Thanks!
  10. By this year we will have had ten SW films in 41 years. I’m not sure if that’s too much.

I think eight Fast & Furious movies since 2001 is too much. Hell, one is too much!

Seven Star Wars films for me. I, II, and III don't exist for me.

So you count the shitty disney star wars movies but you do not count George Lucas episode 1,2 and 3 that is a part of the story 4,5 and 6? It´s people like you that made George sell the rights of Star Wars to Disney, its because people like you that destroyed Star Wars.

Not it's not people like him who made Lucas sell the rights. It was Disney offering him four billion dollars for it. He would have been stupid to turn down the offer. It's also not people like toymakers fault that the recent films aren't as good. He had nothing to do with the making of them. That's the idiot script writers and director who don't know how to make a good cohesive movie. I'm just referring to the newest one myself. The issue with the franchise is now there will be too many different directors getting in on the Star Wars thing and that's what will ruin it. George Lucas is not calling all the shots anymore so there will be no clear direction for a number of these movies going forward.

No no no, toymaker was behind everything. He’s the Palpatine of TRF! :hail:

If you guys did not know it. In the 90s, when George had released episode 1,2 and 3. He got a lot of shit, people followed him and said that he had ruined their childhood. People that called them self for fans. And people are still talking shit about episode 1,2 and 3. Even tho it is many years ago since they was made. And this made George tired of people talking shit about his movies. George have said this in interviews. So that is why he sold the rights to Disney! Not because of the money, because he could earn that on his own, with making more movies!

They're talking shit because the prequels ARE shit.

  11. I hate to say it, but YES there's just way too much Star Wars now and not the good kind. It's getting so watered down, it sucks. I loved the original trilogy and part 7 was pretty fun (if not original) but 8 was just so-so. Rogue One had no endearing characters aside from that one droid and that hurt it big time. The new SOLO trailer did zero for me at all. Another prequel? Why? The only thing that movie seems destined to do is crap on the legacy of Ford's Han.
  12. In week three we are introduced to Discovery, Spore Drive and it appears Michelle Burnham becomes a permanent member of the Discovery crew.

In week four we’ll learn more about Discovery’s clandestine military research, more about why Captain Lorca brought the dangerous alien lion thing aboard?

What are you looking for next based on what we’ve seen thus far?

Honestly my theory is that I hope the Discovery is some sort of time ship that's come back from the future to retrieve Burnham and then go back to a post DS9 / VOY era. When you think about it, it sort of makes sense. You have tons of secrecy, way too many science officers, the ship is basically brand new-looking, they have some sort of mushroom drive tech that works like the Iconian gateways, etc etc. That's what I hope this all amounts to.

  13. Been running through Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel again with my wife. Level 38 Wilhelm TVHM right now.

That's awesome, I've been playing the past couple days after my seeing daughter start up a new Kreig character and it got me back into it. Still have my old commando (level 56) and am trying HARD to kill Pyro Pete the Ultra Invincible on TVHM in order to finally get some of that seraph currency. Since it's still pretty much impossible for me yet I've been farming Treants for a Corrosion proof variant of the Bee shield on UVHM. No luck yet.

  14. I will chime in now and say something.

The Cure were the soundtrack to years of abuse. I found comfort and solace in them, and I used to be able to cry out to them when nothing else could break me down. They were a release, a powerful tonic.

And the album I was most touched by was Disintegration. Which could be my favourite album of all time if only I was able to still play it.

But I cannot. I hear just a note off of that album and I relapse into some of the darkest and most vicious memories that I otherwise sink deep inside.

I love The Cure passionately. Truly I do. But the connection to my past is so strong its left me unable to enjoy them. Which is deeply saddening for me.

Pretty much this and DT's Awake album for me. Helped me get through a tough divorce so now it's hard not to think about it whenever I listen to it again.

  15. My favorite song right now is Cut Here and my least favorite right now is Killing An Arab. I love a lot of there work and I think they are criminally underrated as f**k. They deserve more fans tbh and love.

You're the only one who thinks that, The Cure are legends or at least they are to basically everyone I've ever known who knows anything about music at all.

  16. It's gotta be Grace Under Pressure for sure. It was right in the middle of the synth era and the lyrics and music are a product of the time. Signals is dark but not as dark, Power Windows definitely has a warmer, brighter sound, etc.

Besides Losing It which I think is more sad than dark, what on Signals is dark? The Weapon maybe?

Signals to me has this certain sonic quality which would be like how a movie like Salem's Lot looks. Grainy and cool.

  17. Hi thanks a lot for your advice everybody, sorry it's been a little while but I'm back!

Many of my songs might be considered experiments but I get what you mean. Also yeah in the past I thought having 80 mins of CD meant I should fill it all the way up (and over) but that's not a good idea. Look at DT's "The Astonishing" for example. A great album to me, but if they cut 7-8 songs on it I believe it'd go over much better with everybody else.

So I went through all my recorded songs and have 14 tracks (2 of which are very short, but this is on purpose) and the total length is about 36 minutes. I had to make some hard choices and cut some songs that though I liked them I didn't think they held up too well. I also put them together in a semi-logical sense, which was done by constantly listening to the things over and over (and over) again. One example is that a song that ends with an electric (non-distorted guitar) and the next starts with that same non-distorted guitar. Another example is one song ends with a quiet long fade out and the next is WHAM!!!

I have songs ranging from quiet-ish to RARRRR and most have some humor to them. Not like Weird Al or anything, but that's just how I write. All the topics are completely different which might help.

I'm absolutely no singer however sometimes when I'd hear a couple of "off" parts I'd go back and re-record those (like well after the fact, which sucks). In fact I've even done this since creating this thread, and might do it some more later or tomorrow too. So anyhow I've got all these remixes and I now have a track listing I like but I'm running into a new, unexpected problem:

Some of the tracks sound 'too hot' in places, like it distorts and not in a good way. It's only in a few bits but I can notice it. I finally have mixes I like and this happens to a few songs. BLAH. Another thing is I seem to be getting "ear / listening fatigue" when I listen to these things at any decent volume. Do you know what I mean, or what that could be a sign of?

How I'm mixing these is through an 1/8" cable that runs from my digital 8 track straight to my laptop's microphone jack, and then using the sound wave recorder which saves the songs as .wma files. Then I burn a tracklisting to a CD which I believe is supposed to master them all into one level volume across the board (I think?)

EDIT: I have no producer or anything fancy, maybe at best these will sound like demos but the difference is for me they finally have a halfway decent guitar and drum sound. I was able to get a good drum sound by using the internal mic of the 8 track and lay the unit down on the ground on a blanket behind my kit / the throne. This way the bass drum and a lot of the low end got picked up as well as all the high end and cymbal stuff.

EDIT #2: Another thing is that in some of the songs the vocals are not as loud as in other songs. You can still hear them, but it's not the same level. I don't know if that's an issue that might bother you guys yourselves but it kind of gets to me a bit, and I'm not sure if it's super important or not.
