  1. QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Jun 6 2008, 07:17 PM) There's a difference between Prog and Progressive? now I dont know what the hell Kansas is. I'm sure Mandolarian Hunter would love to tell you about this, I wouldn't want to steal his wonderful theories and pass them off as my own.
  2. QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Jun 6 2008, 06:48 PM) QUOTE (Rushman14 @ Jun 6 2008, 01:33 PM) QUOTE (TheRocinanteKid @ Jun 6 2008, 10:12 AM) QUOTE (1-0-0-1-0-0-1 @ Jun 6 2008, 05:39 PM) QUOTE (TheRocinanteKid @ Jun 6 2008, 06:15 AM) Ahh well, awesome band either way. I'm not 100% convinced they're a Progressive Rock band, not unless you consider Deep Purple a Progressive Rock band too, but they sure are awesome. Kansas not prog? If they're (or were, during their heyday) not a prog band then Deep Purple is a country and western band. What criteria does a band have to meet to be considered a prog band? No I just think if Kansas are a Progressive Rock band than so are Deep Purple. Which is fine with me. I don't know how you can seperate them out. dude! are you familiar with the catalog of both bands? They are entirely different. Purple is straight up rock and Kansas is progressive. I dont even understand why you are comparing the two. Just listen to Spider off Point of Know Return and the debate will be over. TRK, in your opinion, what are the criteria for defining a prog band? Many people define "prog" differently, so I'm just curious how YOU define it. I assume you consider Genesis prog, correct? Correct. I consider Genesis a Progressive Rock band and one of the very finest there is. While I think that both Kansas and Deep Purple have Progressive Rock elements, sometimes quite strong, and I do refer to Kansas as a Prog band because its widely accepted that's what they are I always thought the Hard Rock was more a part of their sound than the Prog. I could be completely wrong, I haven't heard absolutely everything Kansas has ever put out but from what I have heard I'd say they were a Hard/Classic Rock band with Progressive elements. I've heard people talk about a division between Prog and Progressive and to some extent I agree. Prog is a genre, its really hard to define who fits into it but you just know when a particular band does. Progressive on the other hand is a constant experimentation and avante garde musical journey, take King Crimson as my prime example... I was once at a concert talking to a guy I was introduced to earlier that night and we were talking about Progressive Rock, I made some slip up he didn't like and he told me this; "There are no real borders between genres and artists, only pretend ones, born of stupid snobbery and fashion." I made him say it again exactly the same and I wrote it down. Powerful statement, he was clearly very intelligent. Do I completely agree with it? No. Do I think its a fair opinion? Yes. I think if we all followed that advice a lot of our music tastes would be much more varied. Okay I've completely gone off subject, but thought it would be interesting to bring up.

  4. Wha? We have a six page thread on Kansas but when I started a poll about Leftoverture it received like two votes. Ahh well, awesome band either way. 5. Do you think the crossover appeal Rush went for with featuring her on Time Stand Still worked? Did Aimee Mann fans think "That was cool, I should check out more of Rush's music!" and did Rush fans feel the same way about Aimee Mann. Didn't work on me but just curious... Def Leppard recently tried to pull a similar move by featuring Tim McGraw on their latest single, Nine Lives.
  6. QUOTE (Mandalorian Hunter @ Jun 5 2008, 05:56 PM) The Zutons - Tired Of Hanging Around Awesome album, although the debut is better.
  7. QUOTE (Mandalorian Hunter @ Jun 4 2008, 04:49 PM) QUOTE (TheRocinanteKid @ Jun 4 2008, 01:00 PM) I know I'm a bit of a late comer with this but I've got to say that the new Whitesnake album Good To Be Bad; despite the horrible title is the best they've put out since 1987... And I'm even tempted to say before that even though that sounds ridiculous even to me. Summer Rain is one of my favourite Whitesnake songs ever, and could even enter my top 10 favourite ballads of all time list. So glad I bought the enhanced version with the extra disc, there's a beautiful acoustic version of the tune on there too. 10/10. It's easily their best since Ready An' Willing, maybe even Lovehunter. Can't wait to hear some of them live, shame it's a co-headline with Def Leppard which'll mean less Whitesnake time. Anyway, my latest purchase is The Zutons - You Can Do Anything Thanks for saying it. I didn't want to because I think it sounds crazy to suggest this album is better than the stuff they were making more than 20 years ago but its true! I wish Def Leppard and Whitesnake were touring seperately. I'm from Sheffield so almost naturally a Def Leppard fan anyway but their new record just isn't that great and they've been on a decline since Adrenalize in my opinion, I know some people will go as far as saying Pyromania was the last great album... Anyway still looking forward to the gig, even if the recent Def Leppard stuff doesn't have my interest I'll be happy to see the classics live again.

  9. QUOTE (Mandalorian Hunter @ Jun 3 2008, 05:44 PM) Lois/Leia - "Govenor Tarkin, I reckognised your foul stench as soon as I was brought on board." Stewie/Darth Vader - "Um, actually, that was me. I made a Darth Doodie. I Sithed in my pants. My diaper's gone over to the Dark Side. I've got pages of these, I can go on." Damn. I only saw that episode once but I must've missed that.

A little slice of pop heaven! Thanks. I didn't have high expectations for this thread anyway but I knew if there was one person who would reply it would be you. Saved me. I liked them in the mid-70's just before I got into heavier stuff. I did have a cassette of the live album that came out around ('77?), but I forget what it was called. 10cc were from Manchester btw Yeah. It was probably Live And Let Live. That's their major live album and I think it was released around '77. I don't have it but I should get it... They also put out one of those In Concert programmes for the BBC like Genesis from around the same time. There are clips of it on YouTube. The version of Rubber Bullets off there kills. Thats the one! I liked it, it was pretty good. Its a shame they weren't just a little heavier, they would have made a good prog-rock band. Of course 'Dreadlock Holiday' is played in snippets on SkySports Cricket coverage. "I don't like cricket. I love it!" Cool. I should try and get hold of it. Kind of agree on the heaviness factor. I think they could've gained a lot more respect from Rock fans had they fleshed out their sound more. On the other hand I don't think the Pop band label people seem to slap o them is completely fair. A lot of the time they were really just taking the piss out of commercial music, especially on their debut album. Donna is hilarious, never fails to make me laugh. If they are to be classed as a Pop band I think you have to at least give them the subgenre Art Pop. In a similar way to Phil Collins' first three albums I think ithey were much more sophisticated than most chart-bothering music. Do you know the story behind Dreadlock Holiday? Its actually based on real life events that happened to Graham Gouldman and Justin Hayward while they were on holiday in Jamaica.

  13. QUOTE (metaldad @ Jun 3 2008, 12:46 AM) i don't know any of these Shame. I knew it was a bit of a risk going with 10cc, most of their single chart success was in Britain and they're not even really a Progressive Rock band although they certainly have elements of it; as The Prog Lord has pointed out. If you think you might be interested in getting into them I would suggest watching the videos for Feel The Benefit I linked to in my original post and then checking out some of the more famous tunes like I'm Not In Love (Sure you know that anyway!), Rubber Bullets, The Wall Street Shuffle, The Things We Do For Love and I'm Mandy Fly Me. If you like those I guess the sky's the limit. Whether or not you like them is going to depend quite a bit on how you feel about Frank Zappa's Pop music parody songs and Queen's albums from the debut through to A Day At The Races. Let me know.
  14. Awesome thanks for uploading this. Gonna add it to the end of Exit... Stage Left on my iTunes.
  15. "You radiate cold shafts of broken glass" One of the best lines ever, Roger's vocals literally shatter into glass. Awesome! So yep, Pigs for me.
  16. There is no love for the self-proclaimed "Worst Band In The World" here?
  17. I hate the cliched term "ahead of their time" but 10cc are one of the few bands who deserve it. While the music press were busy trying to make sense of their weird arrangements and hilarious lyrics or place them in the appropriate genre the best satirical Rock group in history were out there making some brilliant music. Deceptive Bends could've spelled the end for 10cc. For those not familiar with the story Godley and Creme jumped ship and left Stewart and Gouldman with the very difficult challenge of following up How Dare You! alone. Amazingly the pulled it off. Down to business; although I haven't heard everything 10cc has put out, in fact I haven't heard anything after Bloody Tourists this is certainly my favourite album. As for picking just one track it's very difficult, I'm tempted by both Good Morning Judge and The Things We Do For Love but in the end the 11 minute suite Feel The Benefit has gotta take the prize. Check out this awesome live version of Feel The Benefit. Check out the bass solo in part 3.
  18. There are all based on conversations with people I've had You think there are no guitar solos in Signals. You think Feedback is the band's best work since Moving Pictures. You think Geddy Lee is the guitarist. "The Spirit Of The Radio" is your favourite Rush song.
  19. QUOTE (izzy @ May 31 2008, 03:24 AM) I don't know why I thought of this... maybe because I'm drunk but anyway. I will never forget the time my parents figured out I was smoking dope. (I've been doing it since I was 12). So one day, when I was 15 I was drunk, high on weed and DXM (the crap in cough syrup) and I had made this water-bottle bong, and the bowl that I made had fallen out in the yard, the rest I threw out at the park across the street. So, I'm chillin' in my room and my dad knocks on my door with the bowl in his hand and he's like, 'What's this?' I'm like uhhh, and I close the door because I'm way too high to deal with this. So then I'm sitting there and him and my mom come and give me this talk, I can't really remember. My dad told me that my stupid dog had it in his mouth when he came back inside. Dumb dog! But he's too cute so I wasn't mad at him. What I do remember was in the end my dad says to my mom, "You know, I think Victoria is smart enough to know how much she can handle, let's just leave her alone..." So they leave and I'm sitting there thinking to myself WOW that did not just happen... but it did! I was glad. My dad used to be a hippy but my mom's never done drugs in her life, so I think that's why he said that and it was pretty dead obvious that I was messed up at that moment. It was a terrifying talk, but I'm glad my parents aren't like my boyfriend's parents. We were high all weekend and so one night he comes home and says goodnight to his dad and his dad's like 'are you drunk?' he's like 'no I'm just tired...' So then my boyfriend's downstairs sleeping and it's 01:30 and his dad randomly comes down and is like 'YOU'RE STONED!' and he's like 'what?! no...' so then his dad's like I'll talk to you later. So my boyfriend wakes up and checks his pants and all our weed is gone and his lighter. I'm like dude your dad is totally gonna smoke that without us! Hahaha. Am I wrong to laugh? I like your stories though. Like your Dad I know for a fact back in the day my Dad smoked marijuana. I've only ever been caught once and like you my Dad's reaction was nothing like I expected. It was during my first few weeks of college. Me and my friend Matt couldn't be bothered to go to Music Technology class because the teacher was a real bastard and would screw the f**k out at pretty much anything. So since my house was free I said we could go there, on the way home we say another friend Joe, on his way down to college. We convinced him to share it with us as usual... he's way to kind and instead of going to college we went to my house. In the living room put Made In Japan (Deep Purple) on and started lighting up. Guess the music was a little loud because we didn't hear my Dad coming home from work for lunch for an hour since he was in the local area (Paramedic). He opened the door and the smoke must've hit him, he usually doesn't swear to these sort of extremes but I'll never forget what he said "JESUS SUFFERING f**k!" At the time I wasn't into Billy Connolly (In fact that might have been the event that got me into him) so I thought my Dad had come up with that himself. All three of us couldn't stop laughing and when my Dad came in and saw us neither could he. He later told me he didn't mind as long as it wasn't an everyday thing which it isn't. Phil - thanks, I had to get up pretty early this morning so I decided I'd not smoke too much. Was rather pleasant though. Gleaming my friend, there are far worst crimes than lighting up once in a while.
  20. QUOTE (Gompers @ May 30 2008, 09:48 PM) QUOTE (failte @ Apr 21 2008, 08:52 AM) Candlebox will release their fourth studio record, "Into The Sun," on July 22, 2008. The album's first single, "Stand," hits radio on May 12! I hope it's as good as their other releases. These guys are good. Yep. Haven't heard the third instalment but Candlebox's first two albums f*ckin' own.

  23. I have to admit I kinda think Perez is genuine now. Even though I thought he was Nick at first.
