  1. to the museum that kept them out 13 years...

Well - this is a moot point as they are now being inducted.

    No need for sour grapes

Celebrate the moment - his double neck will enjoy a hell of a lot more views at the Rock Hall then in storage.

  2. Amazing album and it is ranking up there with some of there very best work ever.

I still listen to it a lot. The tour last year amped it up even more. The stuff sounded even better live.

April 26th and 28th can't get here soon enough.

I'll be joining you for both there Todem!

    :dweez: :chickendance: :dweez:

  3. I did not listen to the album for a few weeks, purposely. After listening last night I would have to say that I like it more than before and I liked it a lot before. The songs that I really liked I liked even more and the songs that I was not crazy about I found myself liking. I would have to say this is amongst their best albums.

    Nice!

  4. Ha - my Mom, who is an avid American Idol fan, and an avid non-Rush fan (lol) just called me all excited and played this over the phone :)

I'm always happy to see Rush getting any kind of exposure. This was nicely used and very appropriate - who cares if it's as a result of their induction? I mean, isn't that kind of the point?

I guess it would be kind of lame if they were a mere nostalgia act - but the fact that this is all happening while they are touring fantastic, modern progressive rock album just sweetens the whole deal, for me.

I envy any young fan who is just discovering them. Block out some time, kids !!

  5. I am tired of "Tom Sawyer." Tired of it! It has been played EVERY SINGLE SHOW since 1981, and I'm sick of hearing it on EVERY LIVE ALBUM. It sounds EXACTLY THE SAME on every album. Maybe it's time to put the "modern day warrior" to rest? Can we, as loyal fans of Rush, convince the band that "Tom Sawyer" has got to go?

By the way, before you counter with something about "The Spirit of Radio," I say it stays because it sounds different—better, I think—now than it did 30 years ago.

  6. Hey Geoff - thanks for the thread it is an interesting subject because Rush are a band that has embraced technology and often it is suggested that they either "cheat" by using triggered backing tracks or aren't walking the "tightrope" by relying on click tracks, ect.

    My opinion:

As a fan and musician, it is abundantly clear to me that they are not taking an easy way out by triggering samples on stage and if they do use a click track, I really could care less.

I had the great fortune, thanks to a wonderfully kind member her at TRF, to finally see the band front row last year. It was mind-boggling the level of technical skill and mastery while still being entirely "present" in the songs. I was especially amazed by watching Geddy, with his variety of roles, managing both technical precision while bringing abundant emotion to his performance. Same with Alex - just listen to him solo. Neil is especially loose on this tour.

When I see a Rush show - I am taken with the overall "production" of what they do as well as the pure musicianship of each member. The layers and samples do not distract for me but bring flourishes to the show - particularly when I know each and every one is being triggered by a band member. The amount of skill and precision that takes is so impressive to me. Sure, there was a time when they allowed for technology to bog them down on stage - and it showed in the performance (the HYF tour comes to mind - Ged has mentioned many times how he felt burdened by constraints of his own making on that tour)

To me, the last decade of touring has represented a terrific balance of artful production, raw musicianship... and even (gasp) improvisation.

I see no reason at all to change things, as I have never seen them more "joyful" on stage then I have these last few tours.

  7. Ged and Alex were exceptional and hungry young musicians back then, but all the talent and drive in the world means nothing if you have no chemistry as songwriters in a band.

Rutsey wasn't into it - and Ged and Alex wanted to stretch their legs. Neil came along in the nick of time and just happened to be a fericious and experienced young drummer who also loved to read and write quirky sci-fi shit. They wanted to jam and not write lyrics so they were like, "cool, you're our new drummer and lyricist - let's write Fly By Night! Cool - lets go tour. Cool, lets smoke a shit ton of hash and weed and write a sci-fi concept peice about a Necromancer and call it Carress of Steel!!! ..."uhm, why is our recordl label looking at us like we're crazy? What - they want us to write more short singles like from the first two albums?? Yeah - f**k that, let's write 2112 - all else fails and we go back to our day jobs...

The rest, shall we say, is history.

Had 2112 failed, that would have been the end - but the three of them had found a perfect storm of rebellion, abandon and the desire to push the boundaries of what Rock music should be.

As musicians and writers, each one of them brought a such skill to their craft that, when they put it all together - seemed designed by the Gods.

It was only after that album took off that the record company said - "okay guys, do your thing and we'll never bother you again."

Without Neil, Carress of Steel would not have happened. Without the failure and dissapointment of Carress of Steel, 2112 would not have happened.

Without 2112 - Rush would not have been given the creative freedom to write the music that has made them superstars.

So, no Neil = no 2112 = no Rush

    :)

  8. I could sing the praises of Geds vocals all day long :)

I agree that "Carnies" is one of the coolest choruses he has crafted in quite some time.

His performance on the entire album is fantastic, from the almost reckless abandon of "Headlong Flight" to the fragility and ache of his vocal in "The Garden".

It's understandable that many people judge his vocals based on the ferocity of his voice as a young man - but there is so much more to his voice then that now and he has many more tools in his toolbox. His harmonies, for example, are sublime - people don't realize how difficult it is to write effective harmonies. The chorus of the title track is just fantastic.

Gonna go hop in the car and crank some Clockwork Angels right now :)

  9. I LOVE Donna Summer.

She had a great voice and recorded some of the catchiest tunes I've ever heard.

Of course Geddy Lee of Rush isn't going to lavish praise on that period of music.

That said, the OP needs to answer for his blatent flamethrowing and namecalling - Ged and Alex are very humble and appreciative guys.

I take issue with them being called "assholes".

  10. No surprise that there won't be an R40. Ged's been saying this for months now and we might as well accept it. Get out and see the guys this summer cuz it's gonna be a minimum of a year and a half and likely at least 2 years before they're out again IMO.

And I do think they'll continue to play live well into their late 60s but it won't be like they always have with long tours and such. Look at what McCartney does as the model. He'll play here and there (and everywhere LOL....couldn't resist that song reference) kind of hit and miss and even when he does a tour proper it's like 5 days between shows. This is the model I see for Rush in the next 5-7 years.

Best case scenario for fans right now.

I see no reason for Rush to hash out a R40 tour - they have sort of "been there, done that" with R30 and do not need the money.

I plan on seeing them at least three times on this next leg, then enjoying a long break right along with them.

  11. Just really inappropriate and makes them look like total assholes, which I fear a little mainstream attention has caused them to become.

This comment is FAR worse then anything they had to say. Totally unwarrented and angry.

Please, in detail, give us some clear, concise examples to back up your claim that mainstream attention has caused Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson to become "total assholes" (aside from their venemous attack on disco)

  12. Rolling Stone played Alex and Geddy a song by each of their fellow 2013 RRHOF Iinductees. Their comments, (that you can read below) about Donna Summer were totally inappropriate. You don't diss someone on an occasion like this and not someone who recently passed away. Save your anti-disco feelings for another forum/interview/time. Just really inappropriate and makes them look like total assholes, which I fear a little mainstream attention has caused them to become.

LEE: This brings back memories of a terrible period of music to me. We were hardcore rockers and disco was so counter to that. The divide was stark back then between disco and rock.

LIFESON: We’re not going to vomit listening to it now, as we might have back then. The arrangements of all of her songs are very well done, and her voice is fantastic. She was quite an accomplished painter as well.

Uhm, yeah - that sure was a hardcore diss...

If anything, they should have got up and done "the hustle" - you know, out of respect.
