Genesis, then, for me, but -- to echo Zepphead -- it's the Gabriel-era stuff that clinches it.
Phil Collins is fine for what he does, but Greg Lake had a quality I always liked in ELP(s).
The I Talk To The Wind chord sequence demonstrates enough melodic mettle, in itself.

King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King is one of the greatest albums made. Crimson are just an off the wall. but compelling band. The combination in itself is enough for me.
