  2. On Yes's studio albums, I would say Bill Bruford.

But for live Yes, I would probably say Alan White. He is the glue that holds them together through the twists and turns of the music. On Yes Symphonic, he seemed to navigate the band and orchestra through Gates of Delerium through sheer force of will. 1022.gif

Of course, I've only seen Yes live with Bruford once, on the Union tour. I remember being very impressed, but it was many years ago.

When did I get personal during any of my attacks on Star Wars or the fans in general?  I would like to see what you think "getting personal" really is.  Cuz I assure you, I haven't gotten personal with any of my insults to fans of this series.

For clarification, I believe "getting personal" would be to bring up a point about someone's life outside the realm of this topic.

It's not about "getting personal" or bringing up someone's personal life.

It's about attacking the person as a way to make your argument, or the "ad hominem" fallacy.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem

    Instead of saying...

"Star War sucks! The dialogue is cheesey, the acting is bad, the characters are one-dimensional, etc."

    ...you say something like...

"Star Wars sucks! You fans are all geeks, losers, and virgins! z7shysterical.gif Get a f**cking life! z7shysterical.gif "

You belittled Presto-Digitation's contributions to TRF and said Rush Cocky must be a virgin. confused13.gif

You constantly bash SW fans as geeks and nerds, which is astonishingly hypocritical given some of your own interests (comic books, Powerpuff Girls).

    Does that help?

TSS is right in that last post, of course. The last thing we want to do is give the impression that we don't want differing or opposing opinions on any topic, Star Wars included.

There's no problem with going into the SW threads and expressing an opposing opinion about the movies or their characters. That's normal message board debate.  There's nothing wrong with saying the Ewoks and Jar Jar are abominations and Lucas should be eaten by Jabba The Hut for creating them. Or that Lucas in an idiot for re-editing Ep. IV and making Greedo shoot first. Or even, "Star Wars sucks."

No, what a couple of guys are doing is coming into these SW threads and ragging on the people who like SW, not just the movies. They're doing simply to get under people's skins and start an argument. And it's working. The SW fans fire back and we have personal attacks flying around. That goes beyond simply not liking the movies, and that's what has to stop.

I suggested to the SW fans to ignore the trollish posts of those select few haters. That doesn't absolve what the haters are doing, but it does help to keep these threads civil. The "Star Wars trolls" are acting like children when they try and needle people as opposed to just hating on the movies, so don't feed the trolls!

If you want to hate on SW, go for it. But don't get personal with people in these threads. It's no different in here than in any other part of the board.

    goodpost.gif

Thank you! I was going to post this same observation last night.

The problem is not Star Wars, it's all the personal, ad hominem sniping against individual members and SW fans in general.

I think the first hater post in the "Question about Star Wars" thread (page 2) set the tone we've been seeing all week, with two jibes directed at PD and a bashing of SW fans in general.

I don't mind hearing what the haters say about the movies, and would probably agree with some of their criticisms (especially about the prequels).

But why all the personal sniping? confused13.gif

Santa delivered the live box set!!! The Rainbow disc is superb.

    Happy Christmas fellow MOTSers!!

I just picked up the live box as well. Hate to admit it, but I haven't heard most of these before.

Genesis Live is pretty cool, but HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, Seconds Out is absolutely unreal! I'm still in the honeymoon phase, but I think Seconds Out could be the definitive prog rock live album. Phil, Chester, and Bruford are all absolutely on fire! The versions of Suppers Ready and Cinema Show are breathtaking! I am really, really, really, really impressed! wub.gif

I only wish there was a full video of this show.

I still think Star Wars and comic books are equally geeky, and I still think you're just as much of a geek as these SW fans (not that there's anything wrong with that -- I'm a casual fan of both). I've seen pics of the people who attend both comics and SW conventions. I've seen them dress up in costumes. Both are VERY GEEKY. Make no mistake.

I know there are degrees of geekdom for all genres, but I've always thought that comic store guys were by far the nerdiest. yes.gif

The last time I was in a comic store, there was a table of guys in their late thirties playing Dungeons & Dragons. confused13.gif wtf.gif

Not that there's anything wrong with that. ph34r.gif

It all started with these two massive star wars freaks that would come into the comic shop I hung out at.

So these Star Wars nerds were even geekier than the usual comic store nerds? tongue.gif

Of all the great players in the world they pick these three ?

Yeah i was thinking the same thing dude. I mean, i can see Page for his legendary status, but the other two, no.gif

those two were chosen for their ability to sell movie tickets.

A very sad state and reason not to watch this crap

Looks like they're just trying to represent some different generations of players: 70s, 80s, 00s.

Sure, they could have picked three old guys from the 70s (Page, Clapton, Beck?) but who under the age of 40 would likely check that out? confused13.gif

You always gotta love people putting a movie down they haven't even seen. wink.gif

Seen enough in a preview, plus the 1,000 or so commercials on the topic.

I've read several reviews, both positive and negative, and I came away not eager to see the film. The negative reviews left me with the impression I would not enjoy the film because it has an alleged agenda I don't particularly agree with. I feel I know the reasons why some people like it and why some people don't like it. I'll eventually see the film because I've enjoyed so many Cameron films in the past. I just want the hype to die down so I can watch the film as objectively as possible. My take, don't believe the hype, for now.

Did you guys have a problem with those liberal, tree-hugging Ewoks in Return of the Jedi? tongue.gif

  10. I like both, but voted for Col. Potter.

My favorite era was probably right around seasons 4-5, when they had Potter, Hawkeye, BJ, Frank, Margaret, Radar, Klinger, and Fr. Mulcahy.

The writing around this time was just right for me, starting to get more serious but not as serious as the last couple of seasons. (Though generally I do prefer the later seasons to the first couple.)

It boggles my mind that mere humans could create something as magnificent as The Gates Of Delirium.  Probably the best prog "epic" ever made.

yes.gif I love every version of TGOD, including the Yesshows and Symphonic version. I still can't figure out how they ever pulled off TGOD live with an orchestra. ohmy.gif Mostly thanks to Alan, I think.

Benoit is great. Jon Anderson kept the band waiting for years. I am glad he is doing better but Jon is not Yes!

Dunno... Founding member, voice of the band for 40 years (except for Drama), author of 99% of their lyrics...

I've stuck with Yes over the years through many lineup changes, but not this time. I passed on prime tickets for this tour, despite wanting to see Asia, because I couldn't stand the thought of someone else singing Close to the Edge, And You and I, etc. sad.gif

Saw them live on VH1 Classic.  Phill Collins looked like he belonged in a retirement home.  The band sounded awful to me.

Was that the "Rock Honors" show? I agree, that wasn't their best. wink.gif

But I saw them live on Palladium HD and they looked/sounded amazing! They did a SWEET medley of In the Cage/Cinema Show/Dukes Travels/Afterglow. 653.gif

bumper.gif because I'm getting into Genesis. I've got Selling England By The Pound, A Trick Of The Tail, and Duke as well as a digital 45 of "In Too Deep". I feel like buying more Genesis as soon as I'm able to, and I think I'm going to go with Abacab next. Don't think I've really talked about Genesis that much here so I figured some Genesis fans wouldn't mind discussing which record I should buy next.

You don't have Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, or Lamb Lies Down? ohmy.gif

I love Collins-era Genesis, but these Gabriel-era albums are must-haves.

(You could just spring for Box Set 3, though I don't have it yet and have heard mixed reviews of the remastering.)

  15. I liked all the prequels when they first came out, but *jeez* Phantom Menace has really not aged well. no.gif My main problem with Menace is that large parts of it come across as Saturday-morning cartoonish, because of the digital characters and the way they speak: Jar Jar (obviously), the other Gungans, the Nemoidians, the junk dealer on Tatooine, etc. To me, all these chartacters are so over-the-top in the way they look and speak, they come across as Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters, rather then "real" SW characters like Chewie and ESB Yoda. Seems like whenever Menace is just about to get rolling, some annoying digital character with another sing-songy voice comes in and derails the momentum.

But I liked the prequels a lot more than most, and think Lucas really redeemed the prequels with Sith. For me, Sith almost edges out Jedi if I were to rank the films, and that's saying a lot. If Lucas had started the prequels with a film like Sith and built from there, he probably could have met those insanely high expectations.

    New Hope

    Empire

    Jedi

    Sith

    Clones

Menace (dead last by a mile)

  16. I love COS and Necromancer, but don't love the narration. Neil's voice sounds weird when slowed down like that.

But it's not just the narration, it's the song structure of Necromancer. The narration just serves to emphasize how the song keeps starting and stopping. They'll be jamming along in one section, then everything S-T-O-P-S... And there's a pause... And then the narration for the next section comes in. And then the sequence repeats.

Of course, this was one of Rush's first attempts at a long-form song. Necromancer has some really cool riffs and sections, and I'd love to hear what they could have done with this same material around the time of 2112 or AFTK. I always thought the fast 12/8 riff would be a cool way to start Necromancer, before the first slow section, although that would make it sound a lot like Heart of the Sunrise. Someone mentioned the Yes influence? cool.gif

It was quite above decent on the big screen

Yeah, I think it's definitely worth seeing on the big screen. Especially for the chase and alien/temple sequences at the end.
