  1. And now it's "Decay," the final song from our 1993 demo. With this one, our keyboard player wanted us to combine heavy 90s rock with some very prominent keyboards. Strangely, it worked out pretty well! Like I said, it reminds me now of Soundgarden meets Marillion. This also has my best recorded guitar solo, probably because it was mostly composed rather than improvised.

  2. Yup, I'm mostly a Strat guy and played Showmaster FMTs in my cover band. (Custom Shop flame maple top HSS Strats.) There's just something about a Fender amp with a Strat that you can't beat. A Strat with a Marshall can be cool as well, but is a whole different enchilada.

  3. I haven't gigged for a couple years, but for several years I gigged regularly with a Fender Supersonic 22 and LOVED it! Great clean and crunch channels, pretty light, great projection and coverage for a 1X12, and very reliable. And my BOSS ME70 sounded fantastic through the effects loop. :7up:

  4. >>Have any pics of the original body before you painted it, just for comparison?

I wish!!! I may have pics of the black and translucent blueburst paint jobs, but none of the original. The original body is currently down to the bare wood, so I can take some pics of that. My recollection is that the grain was even nicer than this '76 body.

    >>Yours is even older -- are those still the original frets?

The frets are very flat and may well be original, so that may indeed be the problem. Probably due for a re-fret, and I've been wondering if that will affect the value? Of course, much of the value was probably lost when I refinished the original finish. D'oh! I was in a Metallica phase (And Justice For All) and painting it black seemed like such a great idea. :eyeroll: lol

  5. I guess you never forget your first crush. This is my first real guitar, a 1979 Stratocaster that I got in about 1985. It was a reward from my dad for learning to play pretty well on a horrible thrift store Vox electric guitar. It's back to nearly original condition, after I sadly decided to paint it... twice. I say "nearly" because this is actually a '76 body that I bought several years ago. I still want to refinish my '79 body back to this polyurethane clear coat. But it was fun putting this "hybrid" 70s Strat back together. And this '76 body actually has a tighter fit in the neck pocket than my '79.

The electronics are original except for a Seymour Duncan blade (or hot rails?) humbucker in the bridge. (I still have the original Fender pickup.) I've got the setup very close to where I want it. But it does fret out on the D string around the 14th fret, so I'll probably have it professionally set up.

  6. Next up is "Inner Peace," the third song from our 1993 demo.

There's an obvious Lifeson quote in the solo, which I always loved to throw in whenever I had the chance. It was actually around this time that I was rediscovering Rush's debut and Caress of Steel, because I had initially kind of passed them over. But it was mostly Rush's debut (and Jimmy Page) that inspired me to pick up the '88 Les Paul Custom that I used for the remainder of Phineas Gage. I had always played a '78 Stratocaster before then.

  7. Thank you both! :) Stoopid, I will check out I Mother Earth. The crazy thing is, we were gigging in and around Tempe right in the middle of the "Tempe rock" explosion... or mini-explosion. The Gin Blossoms had been signed and had a hit second album. So there were a ton of bands trying to do the "jangle rock" thing and become the next Gin Blossoms. But The Refreshments and Meat Puppets were the only other Tempe band to really make it big. We always just kept doing our thing and were never in that inner circle of bands like The Refeshments, August Red, Dead Hot Workshop, etc. But we did see those guys in and around Tempe. I remember running in to Doug Hopkins (fired from the Gin Blossoms by A&M) on Mill Avenue not long before he took his own life. :(

  8. Thank you both! My avatar is actually a "pariah dog" found on Google. Just a random stray, I guess.

Here's another Phineas Gage video, for "Right Here"...

This one is more straight 90s rock, and not very prog. I was really digging Gish and Siamese Dream at this time (SP), so that was probably the biggest inspiration for this tune.

  9. Hey, just wanted to share some new YouTube videos from Phineas Gage, my alternative/prog rock band way back in the 1990s. We were active from about 1990-1997 and went through a couple lineup changes and musical phases. We were basically a rock band influenced by funk rock, alternative rock, and prog rock. The drummer and I were huge Rush fans, and the other guys were as well to a lesser degree.

What I've been working on is syncing up audio from our three studio demos with live videos from this period, since the audio on our live videos is mostly pretty poor. :( These first videos are from our second studio demo (1994) and second lineup, which is probably when we were at our best. This was our best sounding demo for sure, and I think you can hear the 90s rock influence as well as the Rush/prog influence.

First up from this demo is "Ghost," and you'll hear a definite Rush influence on this one! :P Funny thing is, our keyboard player came up with this Rush-sounding part, and he wasn't even the biggest Rush fan. But he went with us to the Roll The Bones show in Phoenix, so this part must have gotten into his subconscious. We knew it was derivative at the time, but figured it was just different enough to get away with. The guitar solo section is kind of a Red Sector A/The Weapon vibe, because I was going for something mostly atmospheric.

Anyway, let me know what you think, about both the music and video! This is one of my first attempts at multi-camera editing, so I'm learning as I go.

  10. I just barely made it to 12khz. :( Too much loud live music in my younger days. The sad thing is, I started using earplugs pretty early on but I guess the damage had already been done.

Haven't heard back yet from anyone on homerecording.com. Probably not a good sign. lol Oh well, I do think I did better mixing our second track than our first, so I'll just keep trying to improve. And I'll post them here for feedback before finalizing.

I also talked to my drummer, and we're going to track our parts without recording video so we can punch in where needed. Then I'll video us playing along with the track, and also shoot closeup takes on us both so I can edit them together for more interesting videos.

Definitely a work in progress, but we're just having fun with this! :)

  11. Thanks, both, for the feedback. It's been quite a while since I've recorded or mixed. I'll check out homerecording.com.

The brightness probably comes from some upper-frequency hearing loss I have. :( I added some highs on the Master Out, but guess I overcompensated. The clean guitar was the bridge humbucker with BOSS ME-70 chorus in the intro, plus real Taylor 12-string acoustic throughout (direct in, compression, no chorus). I wonder if the jangliness came from the extra highs on the overall mix? Also, what did you mean by "unification?" A better relative balance of all the parts?

And, yes, this was written with the idea of maybe adding vocals, which I still may do. But I thought it still might work as an instrumental, though it's obviously not chops-oriented by any stretch! And I am definitely re-thinking the live video aspect. I just didn't want to have static title card or slideshow type videos. But I suppose we could always fake it and do live-in-the-studio videos, like Rush's Le Studio vids for Moving Pictures. :)

  12. This was our first song, "Knight Flyer." This sprang from the Oberheim-style lead patch I was playing with, which seemed perfect for an 80s synth-based TV theme. So I figured, why not write a fictitious synth-based TV theme? :) And that OB patch worked great with the Airwolf-style 12/8 sequenced synth bass. The "story" of the show is given on the YouTube link under SHOW MORE, and my drummer did the voiceover. lol

  13. Buenas noches, mein froinds! :) I haven't been around in ages, but wanted to drop in to let you know about my new original prog rock recording project called Red Planet. It sprang from my desire to write and record new material heavily influenced by my favorite genre: 70s/80s prog rock, most notably Rush, Genesis, Yes, Marillion, and King Crimson.

We only have a couple tunes so far, but "World Beyond" is our latest... also known as "Watcher of the Clockwork Cygnus." :) Like all our material, I record the backing tracks in Cakewalk SONAR. Then my drummer and I perform with these tracks in the studio, so that the videos have a live performance element.

I originally was going for a flatter Hemispheres-style mix, but I ended up loving this punchier Counterparts-type mix. The gear list is included on the YouTube link under SHOW MORE. Anyway, please let me know what you think, good, bad, or indifferent! (And I remember this place can be pretty rough at times. lol)
