I think they dropped the ball taking out Hear About It Later for Jamie's Crying

goodpost.gif Agreed with you there! I would have swapped out You Really Got Me for Jamie's Cryin' to be totally honest.

However, its great to hear them switching things up pretty frequently. Keeps the show fresh for everyone, and most of all makes us fans happy. Hopefully Light Up The Sky DOES make it to the setlist soon!!

    Oh, lighten up.

Wrestlemania next Sunday! Cannot wait. yes.gif

Yes it is and I can't wait!! common001.gif

Been a wrestling fan for MANY years, and have been around wrestlers and knew someone who ran a small independant company up here in Ontario. I can tell you that these guys DO put their bodies on the line night after night, and I tip my hat to them!

  3. Hell of a show last night!! 1022.gif

Honestly, the band was ON FIRE. Eddie is playing the best he has in a very long time and looks HAPPY on stage again. Wolfgang may have a lot to do with that now, which is all good with me, and speaking of Wolfie he has really come a long way. He looks SO much more comfortable on stage, and his bass playing is truly top notch. He's a very talented young man. Alex is still a solid drummer, and I'll admit I was very impressed with the TONE of his bass drums, particularly during China Town and Hot For Teacher (double bass kick GALORE). While Dave doesn't run around and jump as much as he used to (age will do that to you), he is still a hell of a showman. Vocally, he's not quite the same but he still sounded VERY solid outside of a bit of straining near the end of the set.

The setlist was pretty much what's been reported here. Nothing new to report, although I was really hoping they would bust out Mean Street, it just wasn't to be though. Of the new songs live, I was most impressed with She's The Woman and China Town, especially the latter which was VERY heavy and it was great to see Wolfie keeping up with his dad with all the tapping in that song. Overall, the new stuff sounded great alongside the old classics and fit right in.

It was a very rocking crowd last night, and you could tell there were lots of diehard VH fans in the crowd. I distinctly remember Eddie playing the first few notes of Hear About It Later, which is not one of their bigger hits, and hearing the roar from the crowd. Lots of singing along too, at times the crowd was so loud singing Dave just stopped and let them do the work! laugh.gif In my section though, there were TONS of drunks more focused on their own issues than the show, pretty much with their backs turned to the stage and just talking up a storm. VERY distracting and I'm glad security eventually got rid of them.

All in all, a hell of a show. I would love to see these guys again. I considered myself a diehard VH fan, but seeing this show confirmed it. My uncle really enjoyed himself too, last time he saw the band was at Maple Leaf Gardens on the 1984 tour! Great night! yes.gif

Hope you have a great time. Enjoyed reading your post. trink39.gif

That tune may not be in the set next go 'round, as they've been swapping out gems here and there, but I suspect you'll enjoy it just the same. Do post some feedback.

Thanks I'm sure I will have a great time!! trink39.gif

Here's hoping they decide to sneak Mean Street back into the set by this Saturday, I'd have to say its my all-time favourite VH tune. If not though, it looks like a solid show regardless!!

I will be sure to report my feedback on the gig! yes.gif

  5. I really don't mean to change the particular subject being discussed right now, but I figured this was the most appropriate thread to say the following.

I'm seeing Van Halen this Saturday at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and I'm really f**king excited!!! 1022.gif It will be my first time seeing them, and I'm going with my uncle who saw them back in the 80's with David Lee Roth. I figured I would surprise him with tickets for Christmas (even got other family members in on the surprise too and we split his ticket cost). Needless to say, he is pumped too!!

I'm currently listening to Van Halen II, and I plan on going through all the David Lee Roth era albums to get myself ready for the show this weekend!! yes.gif

But back on topic here, I'd have to say my favourite song is either She's The Woman or As Is. I really can't decide between the two, both are amazing. I really enjoyed the new album and think its pretty much amazing. It rocks hard, and the band is on fire, particularly Eddie who I don't think has been this focused in years (more than likely thanks to his sobriety).

EDIT: Just saw on the post above mine that VH has added Hang Em High to the setlist. Thats AWESOME news, it's always been one of my favourites off of Diver Down!!

  6. Actually in an interview on one of their concert DVD's , you'll hear Tony Banks say that HE was the one who came up with the chords to Hold On My Heart. Phil only wrote the lyrics.

I can see why they put it into the setlist in 2007. After the roller coaster ride of the In The Cage Medley, and before Home By The Sea, they needed something to give the crowd a rest (and a trip to the bathroom) and IMO that was a good song to do the job.

Don't know if I mentioned this above, but...

THE KNIFE. 1022.gif More metal than anything Genesis ever did - easily the best track from the first 3 albums. 1022.gif wub.gif

That would be The Musical Box biggrin.gif

Perhaps The Knife is more metal, but TMB is a better song wub.gif

    no.gif The Knife kicks TMB's butt! 1287.gif

Listen to The Knife from their 1973 Live album. It will knock your socks off. SO heavy!! 1022.gif

Been a huge Genesis fan for years, ever since I was little. I used to air drum all the time along with their albums.......okay, I'll admit I still do sometimes. tongue.gif laugh.gif

When I finally got to see them on their 2007 reunion tour (which was better than I initially expected to be honest) I was so ecstatic and happy.

Here are some of my favourite tunes:

    The Knife

    The Musical Box

    Supper's Ready

    Firth Of Fifth

The Cinema Show (that ending instrumental section is amazing, live its even better)

    The Lamb

    In The Cage

    Back In NYC

    Carpet Crawlers

Dance On A Volcano (that intro, and THOSE BASS PEDALS)

    Squonk

    Los Endos

    One For The Vine

Afterglow (my all time favourite Genesis song)

    Down And Out

    The Lady Lies

    Follow You Follow Me

    Turn It On Again

    Duke's Travels/Duke's End

    Abacab

    Keep It Dark

    Dodo

    Man On The Corner

    Mama

Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea

    Just A Job To Do

Silver Rainbow (this song along with the above tune is quite underrated)

Land Of Confusion (most people dismiss this as pop shite, but I say its one of the most rocky songs they ever did, its pretty heavy and Phil has quite an aggressive vocal on it)

    Domino

    No Son Of Mine

    Dreaming While You Sleep

    Fading Lights

    Driving THe Last Spike

The Dividing Line (yes I know its from Calling All Stations, but this track is quite good, with some powerhouse drumming from Nir Z on it. Live its a monster with a dueling guitar intro. Check it out!)

An honourable mention goes out to Fountain Of Salmacis which I feel is an underrated Gabriel era song. Those swells of Mellotron throughout are beautiful, and Steve Hackett has a nice solo at the end. I love a lot more songs than that, however I would be here all day typing them so those are just a few. smile.gif

  8. Lahey: "Propane propane, time to start the game. Ricky ruined my f**kin' life Julian."

(Bubbles joins in on the sing along. Lahey proceeds to piss himself.)

    Bubbles and Lahey: "Propane propane!"

    (Lahey stumbles away)

Bubbles: "Julian what in the f**k was he on?!?"

Pop quiz....what was the last rush album to be released on vinyl?

If we are talking studio albums, then Snakes And Arrows. If live albums are also included, then Moving Pictures Live 2011.

I believe TFE was the only one never Vinyl released, right?

I do believe so, however apparently Counterparts is hard to find unless you are willing to shell out for a imported copy. Was it even released on vinyl in North America?? I have seen some copies pop up on Ebay once in a while, but usually from other countries/continents.

Their hits are good and I have a number of their albums from the 70's and 80's.

Not much in the way of good "deep cuts" however.  I have seen them a number of times live and have always enjoyed them live.  Yes, I would spend my hard earned cash to see them again.

Styx actually have a number of very good-great "deep cuts". You should really check out the following tunes:

    Mother Dear

    Born For Adventure

    Man In The Wilderness

Castle Walls (outside of their Wooden Nickel albums, likely the most prog they ever sounded)

    I'm OK

    Queen Of Spades

Pieces Of Eight/Aku Aku (absolutely fantastic album closer)

Love In The Midnight (from their Cornerstone album which was pretty hit and miss, but this Tommy Shaw tune is pretty darn good!)

I'm likely missing some, but Styx are a far more musically varied band than people think, and they are so much more than the hits everyone knows them for. Great band and would love to see them again!!

EDIT: Their new concert DVD/Blu-Ray is set to be released on the 31st of January, taken from the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis on their Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight show they did in 2010. I'm looking forward to picking it up, the clips I have seen from shows on You Tube have been fantastic with the band in top form. Anyone else looking forward to it?

  13. Love Queen. I simply cannot wait for the new Days Of Our Lives documentary to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray in about a week and a half. Saw a clip online from it with the band talking about their 1981 Argentina trip and just seeing that was fantastic.

It was shown on BBC in Europe I believe. Has anyone else seen it or are just as excited to pick it up when released?

  14. I went to Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto with a few good friends for what was supposed to be a free, all ages, alcohol free show. The latter alcohol free part was not to be, since there was MANY people all around drinking whatever alcohol they decided to bring, not to mention lighting up some cool10.gif I'm all for celebrations and enjoying yourself, but when something is promoted as being alcohol free, should you not have the decency to at least take that stuff elsewhere?

There were lots of kids around and let me tell you, safety was a BIG issue especially with leaving. People pretty much decided to push and shove their way out nearly trampling me and my friends (my buddy had his 4-month old son with him) among others. It was pretty frightening, and there WERE cops everywhere, just watching from a higher vantage point. You would figure they would at least help out with directing people in an orderly manner.

I loved spending time with my friends though, and all the fun of the night came from their company which is all you can really ask for. However, NEVER will I EVER go to Nathan Phillips Square, or Toronto itself, for New Years again.

This is not unheard for a Label to do this, if it's true

It would not surprise me if it was something label-related. Considering when they first released the songs they were with Atlantic, perhaps Atlantic would not have liked those two recordings being featured on a Roadrunner release.

This has happened before back in 1995 when Styx ended up having to re-record Lady to use it on their greatest hits album.

Max Webster - In The World of Giants and Paradise Skies

Kim Mitchell is such an underrated guitarist and Max Webster is an amazing band. I recently discovered that Mitchell is from Sarnia, Ontario which isn't too far from my hometown in Michigan.

Agreed!! Just saw him a few weeks ago in my hometown with April Wine, Kim is still on fire!!!

Another GREAT Max solo from him is Beyond The Moon, from their Mutiny Up My Sleeve album.

I remember watching a documentary on VH1. It was pretty good.

Yes, I remember seeing this, and it was good.

I am still waiting for the 3 Sides Live and Mama Tour dvds :waiting:

They were released 2 years ago in The Movie Box 1981-2007 box set, both with newly remixed sound. The Mama Tour DVD has a nifty little extra on it too, Phil shot some home video footage of the making of the 1983 Genesis album, and they included it. Very neat to see them working on the songs!

EDIT: These are only included in the box set. They have not been released separately.

  18. There are a few that have been released which are worthwhile.

On the recent box set releases, there are interviews for each album with the members of the band going into detail about how the songs were written and the band in general at that time. Some of them are very informative and detailed, with the Gabriel years boxset containing the longest interviews. On The Lamb DVD, that interview alone is almost an hour long.

Back in about 1990 or 1991, a video (yes VHS, this one has sadly not been released on DVD) called Genesis: A History was released which is very good and very detailed with a runtime of about 90 minutes. However, this only covers the history up until just before the We Can't Dance album.

There is also the VH1 Behind The Music episode (which was updated and released with their last boxset containing concert DVD's called The Movie Box) which was not bad. However, its quite fast paced and does not really do their history a lot of justice I feel. It misses some points.

Then, in 2001 there was a DVD released called The Genesis Songbook, which featured an hour long documentary on the band with all members involved, which I felt was much better than the Behind The Music episode. Also the extras on this disc are worth it alone, due to some extra footage and interviews, and also some acoustic performances of a few songs. The version of Afterglow on there is beautiful.

After their 2007 reunion tour concluded they released When In Rome, featuring the entire concert from Rome, which was a free gig that attracted upwards 500 000 people. It is a 3 disc set, and the 3rd disc features a GREAT documentary on how the tour came about, with rehearsal footage, as well as LOTS of behind the scenes stuff which is a real treat.

I'd definitely recommend The Genesis Songbook, or the When In Rome set. Songbook will give you the history of the band, while the When In Rome set documentary (titled Come Rain Or Shine) really gives you a great glimpse of that fantastic tour. The interviews on the box sets are amazing as well if you are willing to shell out for them.

Practically all disc-based media players come with optical out these days and your receiver should have one too. They are usually protected by a black plastic "plug" that sticks out about a centimetre from the back of the player so should be easy to spot.

I don't see one on my old reciever, however on my TV there is a "Digital Audio Out" jack on the side underneath all the HDMI inputs. Also, I don't have the manual for the TV anymore, I think it got tossed out a few years ago during the move to my apartment.

So the idea is to go HDMI from the Blu-ray straight into the TV, then do either optical or coaxial audio from the player to the receiver. Correct?

That is the plan yes. smile.gif However, if it doesn't work, I'll live. Having the picture quality is amazing enough! yes.gif
