  1. I was lucky enough to grab 3rd row, center floor section, for the Salt Lake City show. Yes, 2 tickets, $404 each. Is it worth it? Of course the fan in me says yes, but the pragmatic guy balancing the checkbook says "eeehhhhhhhhh....." Regardless, my daughter and I will be geeking out closer to the boys than ever before.

And she'll remember that. That's why the pragmatist had to shut up this time.

  2. I know that we all love Rush, but since this thread is about bands other than Rush, I'll throw this out: anybody here want to see George Thorogood in Vegas on February 27? I'm going, but I've got an extra ticket. I won't tell you where the seat is (it's next to mine, so it's not bad at all), but if you're interested, shoot me a PM and we'll talk.

Man, has it really been 40 years since Rush came out? Crazy.

  3. I spoke with KJA at the SLC Comic Con in September. I told him I had some problems with the story and he implied heavily that sequels were coming. That's my guess.

Kevin J. Anderson, the author of the Clockwork Angels novel announced that he will have major Clockwork Angels news in a few days.

What do you guys think the news could be?

  4. So I went to the Salt Lake Comic Con this weekend and got Kevin J. Anderson to sign my copy of CA. He said he'd do it "as long as I enjoyed it," to which I replied "yeah, but," and proceeded to complain about the stuff I didn't like. He still signed it.

Oh, and for everybody that thinks he's a hack or whatever, he basically answered my complaints about missing/dropped storylines by say that he hadn't addressed them "yet."

    Yep: sequels.

  5. And I actually mailed a copy of the paper to KJA through ECW press and Neil through Anthem via Ray Danniels, but never heard anything back. Don't know if they ever received them or not, but I figured I should at least try to let them know I did it.
  6. I actually wrote and presented an academic paper to explain why some pop culture adaptations work and some don't using CA (the album and novel) as examples. The album was pretty successful and well-received, while the novel, which should have been a no-brainer, wasn't. Lots of negative reviews and commentary on CA the Novel, and KJA directly. Wasn't pretty.

Conclusion: you can't MAKE something popular, as a general rule. POP culture means the POPULACE decides if they like it or not.

The novel would have been a success if a real novelist had written it. Neil is a lyricist - not a novelist. His writing is simply too dispassionate to capture the audience.

Anderson is a 3rd-rate hack novelist. Neil made a mistake by letting his friend do the book. He should have chosen a better writer.

I actually made that point in the paper as well, that Neil was influenced by his friendship on what was essentially a vanity project. Add in the rush (no pun intended) to publication to meet the start of the tour, and it was a recipe for disaster. I cited a lot of the commentary from this board to support those arguments. If the people that WANT something to succeed can't buy into it, then it's a failure of monumental proportions.

Understand that the book did have some positive points, but overall it was just lacking in any sort of cohesion and was, in many ways, amateurish, which in the end falls on KJA, not Neil.

  8. So, I managed to get myself credentialed as Press for the upcoming Stan Lee Comikaze in Los Angeles. I'm thinking that, aside from my ridiculously long drive in and out, it should be a blast.

Any Rush fans going to be there?

  9. Quite a few times. That's why I knew the front of the 200s will give my daughter a perfect view over the heads of the 100s and basically put her on stage level. Of course I'd love to be in row 1 or 2 up front, but the $$ for that is just ridiculous. Again, that's why I was so glad these popped up. we're on the right hand aisle for that section, but thats even better.

I was happy that I got a pair in the front row of section 202 so my daughter can actually see the show this time. Ticketing sucks, that's for sure.

Have you been to the venue before?

    Help!

Amazon reviews can be helpful, and I have looked at them, but I am also looking for some that are a little more independent than quasi-anonymous reviews on a website shilling a product.

    Good suggestion though. Thanks.

    Help!

    All,

I am currently working on a paper to present at a regional Pop Culture conference early next year and I am referencing the CA Novel. What I need help with is finding reviews (not just Board posts or like that) that are NOT glowing to round out my research. I'm not talking NYT reviews necessarily, but thoughtful, well-written discussions of the novel.

If any of you are aware of such reviews, could you post a link. I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks much.

  10. Anybody got any more scuttlebutt about the 2013 leg? I know nothing is official, but we've got some pretty good sources lurking about the forums. Any word on Denver, Salt Lake, Vegas part II?
  11. Is there any word/rumor of a second leg of the tour in the spring? These 30+ dates just don't seem like enough, and with them missing areas they normally hit, it just seems like there will be another batch of dates early in 2013...
  12. Yesterday, a local DJ came on after playing some Rush and said that she wasn't happy with the band, since she's heard that Salt Lake City isn't on the plan for the tour THIS SUMMER.

Now, I know that we've all been hearing that the tour will start in maybe September, but the fact that she heard that SLC isn't on the route makes me wonder if they'll be running only larger areas, or even larger arenas again instead of amphitheaters, especially if they start later in the year.

Regardless, I guess my point is that SOMEBODY, SOMEWHERE, is apparently already fleshing out tour dates and destinations, which is progress, right?

  13. Nothing too exciting, but at the Vegas show I got the set list sheet from one of the ushers (before the show started--they're not supposed to let those out of their possession). It even includes the word "BOOM" next to Marathon and Far Cry for when the big pyros blow.

Sadly, I wasn't close enough to get a t-shirt, pick, or sticks, but it's still nice to have something from the show.

Back to your lives, citizens...there's nothing more to see here.

  14. Hey, all.

I just wanted to let everyone know about an excellent independent film project that needs the support of movie-lovers everywhere.

MALICE looks to be very good. I know the writer, Russ Adams, and have read the script. They already have some name talent on board behind the scenes, but more help is needed. Trust me, this is going to be a good flick.

If you like quality movies and not just recycled hollywood trash, please visit the link below, watch the video, and support it if you can.

    Thanks.

  15. QUOTE (yyz311 @ Jan 24 2011, 10:08 AM)
Yet another road trip to MGM.  Wish they were coming to USANA again, but a couple days in Vegas is always fun.

I heard that, brother. My daughter and I now have seats for the show, so my wife will be off doing whatever it is she is going to do during the show.

But you're right: a couple of days in Vegas is always good.

BTW: any Vegas folks remember how the floor seats are numbered?

I got floor D row B seats 1-2 (so my 5'5" daughter can ease into the aisle), but I can't remember which aisle that is: inside or outside. I think it's the inside aisle, but either way, she'll have a blast.

See all of my fellow SLC folks there!

  16. QUOTE (Rushchick10 @ Jan 18 2011, 05:33 AM)
Planning on Austin, Portland and Seattle for the time being.  If I can swing one (or both) of the LA gigs, I will.  Kinda pushing it, though, to be honest...  unsure.gif

So You won't be in Vegas this time? Sorry I won't get to see you.

I'm going to try to snag seats for my daughter and me, so wish me luck.

  17. I was not attempting to rationalize whether or not ticket prices are too high, and I don't even want to go into the whole "CD sales are dropping" argument. The point of my response was that if you can afford to go to a show, then go. If not, don't. If they put out a CD, most fans will by it and go to a show if they can.

Really, I don't have a problem with what Rush's ticket prices are doing, especially having seen what some acts charge to do a stadium gig.

Anyway, the point is that the argument is moot. Nothing we say or do on this board is going to change either the ticket prices or CD sales.

And that's the truth, so support the band whoever you can, if you so desire. If not, stop harping on it.
