  1. I hope the mix gives a bit more punch to the 70s kit toms. I always associate Rush with a crisp, razor sharp tom sound. The drums sound a bit "soft" to me on the recordings I've heard.

I agree about the tom sound being sort of an iconic part of the Rush sound. I can't help but think that the toms don't sound as good on the DW drums, regardless of the mix. They're more melodic sounding now, and less punchy.

  2. Wondering if this mystery has ever been solved. I only learned about the second CAR kit yesterday. It would be fascinating if the private owner of the kit would reveal him or herself.

My first thought was that since the kit was provided by Tama for those four shows only, the drums would then return to Tama after the show's competition and may have been used for something else? Now, I have nothing to validate that, it's mere speculation on my part.

  3. Is anyone else rubbed the wrong way a little by Neil's writing here? It's almost like he is saying, "Why did no one notice or give me recognition for how awesome my solo was?" Everyone knows Neil is a fantastic drummer, one of the best. But exactly what sort of praise does he expect every time he plays a solo, even 40 years into his career? And then he basically sums it up with, "Well, at least somebody out there gets it," as if the masses don't understand how deep his solo is and therefore can't enjoy it properly.

Don't take this the wrong way - Neil is one of my heroes. But this writing almost has a tone of arrogance to it, in my view. Which I guess his writing has always had, now that I think about it. His books do sort of the same thing from time to time.

  4. Time Stand Still was the first ever Rush song I heard, so it's quite special to me. Aside from that, the song itself is brilliant, I listen to it a lot when I'm out and about. I agree the studio version is perfect, although I am a big fan of the Show of Hands version. I always wondered why Geddy sang the lyric 'I'm not looking back but I want to look around me now' so high when performing it live, when in the studio, it's sung much lower. It would have saved his voice a lot, especially on the Time Machine Tour. He really struggled a bit there, with respect to Ged.

As for Big Generator, being a huge Yes fan, I love this album too. Shoot High, Aim Low is one of my all-time favorite songs by that band. Rabin's guitar solo is majestic.

+1 on Geddy's strange choice of an octave jump there. I never quite understood that, especially given the studio recording doesn't do that.
