  1. My take is that if they wanted to do a look from the concert during that segment there are better shots where the disco ball is not so prominent, and the boys are taken at a better angle. Over all it is ok, but not my favorite look.

  2. The lyrics are a huge reason why I've stayed with Rush my whole life. Of course every member of the band is a master musician and the music they created has enormous artistic merit, but I just don't think Rush would be Rush without Neil's lyrics. From the early fantasy-inspired days to introspective concepts and even world view perspectives....you can hear the band grow up through the lyrics and the music progressively. To me, that is the hidden meaning of "progressive rock" - not necessarily a band that plays technical licks in odd time signatures, but a band that improves and reinvents (grows) with each new album.

But here is what is truly wild about Neil's lyrics to me. As a young adult, I almost feel like I can place myself in Neil's shoes when he was my age - all by listening to whatever album he would have been writing at the time. It turns out that 26 year old Neil and I think a lot alike, and wonder about similar things. But I may find that as I get older, my views and thoughts will change. And I wonder how I'll listen to Rush differently then.

Nicely put. It's kind of a developmental thing.

I started listening to Rush at age 10, the lyrics was a big factor, they really spoke to me, now at 50 songs like "The Garden" again speak to me, I can find songs in every decade of Rush that echo what was going on in my life at the time. They are my all time favorite band for that reason.

  3. I am glad that Rush has such a diverse catalog of work. I can find something from every era that I like. Each decade has material that can suit specific moods I'm in.

Yay for diversity in music. I don't know if I would have been such a long time fan if they had remained stuck in the '70 style. I think that I might like the music but they would not fire my imagination as the various phases have done, sometimes 'because' I didn't like the style they were using, kwim.

  4. "But I can't sit still when I crank up my stereo in my car, so if people think I look stupid, oh well. I am just having a great time, I do it for stress relief after a lousy day at work and singing is therapy for me."

This exactly, I really never thought about what people thought, and I have to play Rush loud...isn't it a law or something?'

  5. If Alex and Geddy toured live you know the fans would come out to hear Rush tunes. If they did it without Neil it would be a nostalgia band, and they have said many times they don't want that. There will be no NEW Rush music without Neil. Can and will Alex and Geddy make music and tour without Neil,, it is possible but I really don't think you will be hearing Rush tunes live if they do.
  6. The way I read it was not that Alex's health was the reason they decided to stop touring--it was the reason Neil agreed to do it at the time they did it. Alex wasn't sure how he'd recover from surgery and wasn't sure how his arthritis would feel if they waited, so he said he'd rather do it sooner than later. That was all back in November. Now Alex has mixed feelings about touring, Geddy is all in and Neil is "done." Alex has stated more recently that he could see doing the odd show or few nights of shows here and there rather than a tour. That seems to be a realistic scenario for all involved. Neil's objections are with being away from family for months at a time, and the physical toll of playing 3 hours every other night for months at a time. No need for any of that if it's just one show or 4-5 nights in one city.

Neil doesn't need the band anymore. He's got his books. It wouldn't surprise me if we see him start dabbling in writing fiction before long.

I agree that I think you will see fiction by Neil before too long. I actually think he would do a good job at it, I enjoyed Drumbeats, which I believe he co authored

  7. Why back in my day Rush ladies didn't even exist from what I could tell.. where did all you wonderful creatures come from?? ;)

Maybe you didn't look hard enough for us. Looking at old concert photos from the '70s there were definitely women at shows. I wasn't because well, because I was only ten years old. The friend that introduced me to Rush is really the only Rush fan I knew growing up, even during the Tom Sawyer/Spirit of Radio heyday they were not really played much were I was. They are way more mainstream now than back then at least in my view.

  8. I'm a guy, but I was wondering what the difference would be for a guy getting into rush and a woman getting into rush? For example in my case my sister and I discovered my dad's Roll The Bones CD and BOTH loved it (at the time). This isn't meant to be rude, but why ask women why they got into rush? Wouldn't it be for the same reasons a guy would get into them, because they like the music?

I think the bigger question is why are the majority of fans of "harder" music men, and not women?

Maybe because in general, women are more sensitive/emotional, and as such are more likely to be drawn to love songs and music more of that nature. I'll bet a lot of these women who typically listen to softer music would see that they could enjoy more edgy stuff if they ever actually gave it a fair shake.

The way I see it is though that Rush has always had sensitive stuff...maybe not 'love songs' but reflective stuff. Of course I was reading Tolkien when I heard Rush for the first time, so it fell right into what my thoughts were.

These days I love the hard rocking stuff, and I don't know about the rest of you but for some reason I have to play Rush as loud as possible, it just needs to be loud enough to feel it, kwim?

  9. Eggplant exactly. I would expect it would be for the same reasons. However, I often get a surprised look from men when I say I like Rush, although I think that it is more common now for women to like Rush than back in the day. If you notice some of the women who answered also mentioned that the personality of the guys played into why they like them. I'm not sure that men like musical groups/artists because they are nice ;)
  10. Narps I was 10 when I first heard them, my family weren't into concerts, no money..etc....I think I got to see some good stuff when I finally did get to see them, just man the cost about kills me. I sometimes wonder if I would have been the only women there if I had managed to go to a live show back in the day?
