I think their first album kicks ass and stands up strong against most modern bands debut albums! Its one of my fav rock albums and I'm not ashamed to say it loud and clear!

    Absof*ckinglutely! yes.gif 2.gif 1022.gif

    yes.gif goodpost.gif

I can't help but to shriek OOOOOHHHHH YEAHHH OOOOOHHHH YEAHHHH whenever Finding my Way comes on 1022.gif

  2. There are a few words that I did not know the definition of before (and while) listening to Rush, and since then I have looked them up and added some new words to my vocabulary.

Dirge (a funeral song or tune, or one expressing mourning in commemoration of the dead)

Asunder (into separate parts; in or into pieces)

Cathode (the electrode or terminal by which current leaves an electrolytic cell, voltaic cell, battery, etc)

I'm sure there's some more, but these are the three that I specifically remember.

How has Rush expanded your vocabulary?

Edited to include terms added to your vocabulary

  3. Oh, I gotta think about this one for a minute..

    I LOVE Hold Your Fire

I typically love a lot of songs that most people dislike, ie:

    High Water

    How It Is

    Red Lenses

    Good News First

    Second Nature

    The album version of Resist

    Neurotica

    The Big Wheel

    You Bet Your Life

    Face Up

    Hand Over Fist

    War Paint

    The Color of Right

    ..to name a few

I'm bored with Moving Pictures, and I typically skip most of the songs. It's a great album, I think I've just listened to it WAY too many times

The boys lost their sex appeal after 1978, IMO tongue.gif

2112 isn't in my list of top 10 favorite songs

    Neither is Xanadu

That doesn't mean I don't still love them, though

The Cygnus duology is MUCH better than 2112

    Jacob's Ladder is EXTREMELY overrated

So is Mystic Rhythms (though I will admit, that song is finally starting to grow on me)

    And Armor & Sword

    And Losing It

I think HYF, Presto and Roll the Bones are all very solid albums that each get equal play time in the car

I actually enjoy the rap portion of RTB. I recognize it as sort of a joke, so I often laugh with it

But I cannot say the same about ITIGB or Dog Years. Those are just bad songs, period

I love Geddy's vocals from the 70s, especially the indiscernible ones, such as By-Tor and BB&B

How It Is is my favorite song from VT, followed by Vapor Trail

Everyday Glory is one of the best songs. Ever. By any band, any decade. This is not opinion, this is fact laugh.gif

That's all I can think of right now

  4. I like both albums, but I voted SA by a slim margin. VT has better lyrics, but I think SA has better melodies, even if most people think the album is boring. And I hate to be the upteenth person to bring it up, but the production issue with VT has kept me from really enjoying the album.

    edit:

    QUOTE (CrossedSignals)
I realize that VT's production is a big stumbling block that simply prevents many people from enjoying the album. I can respect that. I think that if Rush had given the arrangements more room to breathe, used less overdubbing, and went with a more traditional mix/mastering job, VT would rank in most people's top 10. The songwriting and performances are very strong.

I agree with you here. I bet I could really enjoy the album if it weren't so painful to listen to at times.

Come on, SOMEONE must've misheard "an air of joie de vivre" in Force Ten. I remember playing that part over and over trying to figure out what Ged was saying. I kept telling myself, "It's gotta be something in the English language!" wacko.gif

-an heir of jwah de me
-anne air of jwah de me

    I had no clue.

I always heard "never try to leave" and never thought to look up the lyric until your post tongue.gif

I wonder if there are any other songs where French is spoken that I've misheard all this time, excluding the obvious lines in Circumstances.

For the longest time I thought the line in TSOR was "ripe and tender, blissful with the energy."

    Oh, and

"Time's up ladies, grouped by flickering PORCHLIGHT!"

The first time I listened to By-Tor and BB&B I had NO CLUE what was being sung. But I loved it

I think we already have quite a bit of that from likeclockwork who appears to be genuine. The gist of it being that most of the rest of the album will be a lot more melodic and lighter than what we've heard so far:

I've heard most of the album and can confidently say that Clockwork Angels is significantly better than S&A. There's only 1 song I don't particularly like so far. Whether they suit your personal taste or not, the quality to these songs is just way way better than the last couple of albums. These songs are confidently made and don't sound forced at all liked much of the recent material in my opinion. Also, as heavy as the songs that have been released are, many of the remainder are quite the opposite. The album has a very diverse collection of songs. I'll also say that Headlong Flight is not one of the songs in my regular rotation either - but I'm always partial to more melodic and hook-y songs.

Most of the remaining songs sound very different from the three songs that have been released to date. There's a much more melodic side to the album that hasn't been seen yet.

Melodic and lighter....as in bravest face and good news first and faithless or different strings, losing it, mystic rhythms, the pass? Hmmmmm....if many fans are expecting heavy/prog/complex/acrobatic stuff from the rest of CA based on what we have heard so far, how will the general reaction be to "melodic and lighter"?

My guess is it will depend on the strength of song writing, flow, naturalness, and confidence. If the songs are going to be folksy ala SA, a lot of complaining here. But, if more in line with 70s and 80s lighter and melodic, then we may have a winner.

The best I can describe the melodic songs is to say that if you took The Color of Right, How It Is, Out of the Cradle, Faithless & Bravest Face, figured out where they were trying to go but couldn't quite get to and advanced it about 9 stages you'd have what we have on this album. The songs are much richer and not wimpy. They don't sound like old school Rush - they sound very much like modern Rush but simply having gotten where they were trying to go - if that makes any sense.

I actually like the sound of this biggrin.gif

Probably the most underrated Rush album of all.

    yes.gif

    goodpost.gif

    Totally agree.

    yes.gif

I gave it an 8 as well. Nobody ever appreciates Presto. Hell, I even enjoyed Superconductor for a while until that song just got... old. And Rush songs typically do not get old with me.

  8. I gave it a 10. It's one of the first albums I really loved, and all the songs have only gotten better with time for me. I always had mixed feelings about Mystic Rhythms, but that track finally grew on me. I had this CD blaring in my car on the way to my final exam today biggrin.gif

Oh, and blasting Marathon at the gym PUMPS YOU UP!

  9. I gave it an 8. In my opinion, tracks 1-8 are fairly strong for the album, and yes, I love Second Nature and I am not ashamed to admit it biggrin.gif. Open Secrets and Prime Mover are two of my favorite songs, lyrically.

Tai Shan is bleh, but I like High Water. It's one of my favorite songs to air drum/sing to in the car.

"when something left the ocean, to crawl high above the foam... WE STILL FEEL THAT ELATION!"

    Haters gonna hate tongue.gif
