  1. Tom Sawyer and Moving Pictures.

I moved to AZ when I was 14 in January '82. I didn't know anyone and I used to sit out by the pool after dark and listen to music and miss my life and friends back east. Prior to my moving, a friend of mine put a copy of Tom Sawyer on the back of a homemade "Styx Cornerstone" cassette I had. He said Tom Sawyer was really cool and I should listen. Meh, was my reaction at the time.

One night, I let the cassette run to the end. What should have been about 5-6 minutes of blank tape was Tom Sawyer. I was intrigued and I really like what I heard. The next day I was riding the bus to school and "Take Off" came on the radio (Hey, that sounds like that Rush guy...). I bought a copy of Moving Pictures on cassette after school.

I put it in my player when I got home and was blown away as the album progressed! It was like the music had been written just for me (obviously not) and I immediately connected. Love at first listen! wub.gif That sound! wub.gif

Thus began a 30+ year love affair with the Greatest Band in the Galaxy!

  2. So, I'm standing in front of the mirror this morning drying my hair. With a song in my head, as usual, I realize that I have misheard a word in a favorite song of mine for nearly 30 years now. 30 years!

Through into the light of Deneb.

It made perfect sense to my ear 30 years ago and got burned into my brain when I was a teenager. I still hear it that way now and sing it that way; it still makes sense to me. I've seen the lyrics. I know its "flew into". I understand why that makes much more sense than my lyric.

I think its because I originally copied AFTK to a cassette from a friend's album 1287.gif That cassette *was* my copy of AFTK for many years until I bought the CD in the mid 80s. I never really studied the lyrics, I knew (I thought) what I was hearing. Nothing challenged my ear like CygnusX-1. It immediately became my favourite Rush song and pushed me further into my interest in astronomy (total amateur).

So even this morning, after misquoting a lyric last night (and getting called on it in the forum, no less), I'm singing CygnusX-1 in my mind and we set a course just east of Lyra, and northwest of Pegasus, through into the light of Deneb... No! banghead.gif "Flew into the light of Deneb!"

Amazing how our brains improperly record and then, years later, the effects are finally realized. I wonder what else lurks in the wings. Know gleaming alloy air car, so at least there's no concern there.

And, BTW, I will never be able to hear "lemony cake" or "your lion" quite the same now that I read this thread (and figured out "Your Lion"s handle). Neither of those variations had even occurred to me before TRF. doh.gif

For some reason I can hear the popular beat music outfit RUSH's ditty The Larger Bowl as I read this thread...

...such a lot of nouns on the verbs...

Agreed. It's all so badly arranged, if they're so much the same like I always here. wink.gif trink39.gif

  4. The impulse is pure

    Sometimes our circuits get shorted

    By external interference

    Signals get crossed

    And the balance distorted

    By internal incoherence

A tired mind become a shape shifter

    Everybody need a mood lifter

    Everybody need reverse polarity

    Everybody got mixed feelings

About the function and the form

Everybody got to deviate from the norm

It almost looks pornographic.  And a rather disconcerting size.... unsure.gif

What a strange looking creature.  Look at the amazing things I learn in TRF!

    Thanks....I think...

I dunno about disconcerting... I felt decidedly queasy...

Yeah, queasy too. That's a good word.

This album, as well as every Rush album that proceeded CA represents them and where they were at that time.  They could have never written this album in 1981.  They needed 55 + years of life experience.  Listen to Moving Pictures and Clockwork Angels back to back.  You'll hear how far they have come in every sense; musically, lyrically, emotionally, spiritually and maturity.  You can hear the miles and 30 years that separate the two records.  2112, Moving Pictures, Clockwork Angels.  3 significant chapter headings of their journey.

The end of The Garden reminds me of the end of Abbey Road in a way.  I think it's the end of something remarkable.  Everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Mine is, CA is their greatest body of work, and their last.  There is something about this record.  It is absolutely genius, exceptional, highly representative of them and their style.  I do believe that when we look back decades from now, this will be considered their Sgt Pepper.  The greatest thing they ever did.  Amazing that a band can have a 40 year career, 20 studio albums, and produce their greatest achievement at the end rather than the beginning or middle of it all.  How could they ever do something better than CA?  My gut is, they're going to go out on this high note.  Not sure how long they can play night after night for 3 hrs.  Has anyone heard Geddy's voice on the Time Machine DVD?  They can't do it night after night for 2 years like they could in the past.

I bought tickets to 6 concerts on this tour because I fear it may be their last.  They are 60 years old.  This tour will last until the end of 2013.  What are they going to do?  Write and record and release an album in 2014 and then tour again for two years?  Nope.  This is it folks.  Enjoy it.  It will be incredibly sad to me when they're done.  They've been with me my entire life.  Every chapter of my life coincides with a chapter of their incredible library.  I don't want it to end.  Maybe we'll get lucky and they'll continue to record even if they are not touring.  Maybe they'll release records and play 1,2, or 3 big shows per year.  It will end, as things do.

How lucky are we the fans, that all 3 are still alive?  None of them burnt out, declined, drugged out, or left the band.  There's no infighting that leads to turmoil.  Look at KISS.  What are they holding onto?  How embarrassing that they get up on stage with two sidemen wearing Ace and Peter's makeup.  They should have closed shop long ago.  Not our 3 boys.  I love them.  I am so thankful for what they've done and for what their music has brought to my life.

Certainly agree with the Rush aspect of your post and understand your KISS reference. smile.gif Nicely stated.

    Welcome to TRF!

I agree completely. I've been listening since the mid 1970s. At first, I couldn't put a name to it, but I categorized albums as either "becoming" (they're brainstorming something, but it ain't perfected yet) or "arrived". I guess all of us on TRF could argue 'til the end of time about which albums fit into the breakthrough category, but it's definitely a pattern. I do think CA was an "arrival" where S&A they were just working up to it.

I was watching the "A Show of Hands" DVD for the first time last night and, wow, it's strange seeing them back then. It was, of course, a GREAT concert but then I gave CA a spin again today and it's just an evolution from the HYF/PW days.

Can't wait to see what's next.

BTW: Candide and The Secret Agent arrived today. I'm stoked.

    goodpost.gif I agree.

I'll be interested on your take on Candide. I found it very deep and pertinent.

    Happy reading! Enjoy! trink39.gif
