So what did the Mayan calendar have to say about who will win???
Did it involve ?

You mean there's *new* music, too?!?
Most of my music purchases this year are to back fill holes in my catalog or things I want to learn on bass (Motown, Duck Dunn, Sgt. Peppers, Big Band era stuff). In the 21st century, first Adele and Gaga - who are these people everyone's making such a fuss about - not really this year's stuff though.
Er, there's Rush....and.....uh.....
?

So I hear. I think he might be a bad influence. Last night (?), he kept showing pictures of these weird snake things...

Hey....between you and treeduck, are you guys trying to get me drunk?
I've been warned about the evils of liquor.
Thanks, no really, I couldn't....well....maybe, just one...
Feeling groovy...
ok...just one more, I'm kinda on the skinny side, but I hold my liquor pretty well.
Woohoo.....

QUOTE (goose @ Aug 3 2012, 03:25 PM) QUOTE (CygnusGal @ Aug 3 2012, 01:14 PM) Rush? Grammy? I wish it weren't so, but it is what it is. Would love to be surprised though.
This is the same organization that called Jethro Tull the "Best Heavy Metal Band" (over Metallica in 1989 or 1990, iirc).
It was the first ever Heavy Metal Grammy awarded, the year was1989, and the band was surprised (no member attended the ceremony!) and embarrased. Three years later, in 1992, when Metallica finally won the Grammy in the category, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich joked, "First thing we're going to do is thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year."
Tull took out this advert when they won, as a joke:

Thanks for the memory jog, goose. I knew Metallica worked into it somehow. Grammy history is not a strong subject for me.

How about going straight for the hard stuff?
This does appears to be an endurance race. tasty, just one though. Thanks for the shot!
Well, okay, maybe just one more...
Like waiting for the cyclists to go by during the Tour de France....
(just one more...gee, I guess I did need three afterall)

Hope you're right and they do get nominated, TM. It's the optimist in me.

QUOTE (Animate @ Aug 3 2012, 12:33 PM) I love these stories- it is mind blowing how different it was for everyone, and that so many different and unrelated albums could be peoples first.
Totally did not expect Presto, and especially HYF, to be the critical introductory album for so many!
This is seriously the Best Thread Ever! Wish there was a "Like" button!Agreed.

Yes, I think. I'd be surprised if they didn't play it, actually, given all of the advertising that I've seen for it and I've heard it on the radio as "the new Rush song".
Will probably be rather Gilmour-esque.

Armor and Sword. No one gets to their heaven without a fight. I love Geddy's bass and Neil's drumming. Alex sounds awesome. Lyrically strong. Rush, back at full power.
And that's my opinion of my favourite song on all of Rush's albums. Gauntlet complete.

The Seeker. A great song covered by a great band. Feedback is an album. It is an homage to all of their influences. They are tipping their hat by recording an album of cover songs. Without the songs on this album, Rush would sound very different or may not even exist.

Vapor Trail. Some love the VT album, some hate the VT album. I love it. Raw. Just like the band. I never thought I'd hear new material from Rush again after 1997. VT was a gift. This song, in my opinion, provided the deepest insight into what they had all been through in the preceding years. Ghost Rider is also a stand-out to me as are The Stars Look Down and How It Is.

Driven. An interesting album. Kind of melds the 80s synth and the 90s back to basics. I've actually learned to enjoy this album more over time and I think it gets better over time. A very strong effort.
-
Animate. Now that sounds like Rush! Loved the back to basics approach. A very lyrical, melodic and interesting album. One of their finest efforts. Regarding Animate, Geddy says "That's the sound of my amp exploding!" And it sounded like it. Awesome!
-
Dreamline. Just a great song. Learning that we're only immortal for a limited time. Rap was kinda weird, but a very good album overall.

Show Don't Tell. Redemption. Geddy's finger funk is in fine form. The Pass is one of my favourite Rush lyrics and is a close second, but, to me, SDT sounded like the Rush I loved.
This or That: Rush bassline version!
