  1. I think you are stressing to much. You are stressing on the wrong things. You will never play solos exactly as Alex does, nor should you want to. A solo is something that comes from an extremely personal and unique place from any musician. On recording, it's just a moment that was captured, unique in time, where the immediate feeling and mood of the musician was captured. That is what a good producer does, he/she will know when that magic moment occurs. Even the musicians themselves rarely play a solo exactly the same every time, sure they might follow a basic framework but they will play with it, express how they are feeling right then at that moment.

Now having said all that, I learned everything I could from Alex....copping his sounds, solos, equipment... all of it. What that did for me was teach me technical playing skills, only because I practiced a lot! Long and hard. In the end, my style is now my own, I don't play like Alex...only Alex plays like Alex. But I can play his stuff, I have fun with the technical challenge and I'm good enough to play it with my own spark and essence. Stress is not in the equation, only joy and wonderment of the beautiful music...that's the key.

  2. Taurus pedals are something truly awesome! The analogue filters have not been replicated as far as I know. The trick is to tune the oscillators slightly out of tune from each other...that's when they sound fat and huge!

Had the taurus II pedals and got rid of them immediately...not even close to the originals.

All it needs is the Varitone switch, a tortoise shell pickguard, and the Maestro tremolo and you've got yourself an Epiphone Alex Lifeson ES-355

I wonder if they got the volute right z7shysterical.gif

    probably no volute

Here are the details some of you asked for... any takers????

I coach a youth football team, and out mascot is a Panther. We adopted the phrase "Panther-dise" (like Paradise) to refer to the stadium.

What I am looking for is someone to record "This must be just like living in Panther-dise" to the DLR song "Just like Paradise"

I don't care if it has the backing music or anything, 3 beats with no music will be fine... I will then cut out "paradise" and insert "Pantherdise" to use for our opening song....

Hey, sounds like fun. I'm game. PMed ya

I never liked the sound that Geddy got out of his Wal. It sounded much too twangy and was lacking in the bottom end.

I've never had my hands on one so I can't say anything about how it feels.

I agree, tonally its a very unusual instrument. Quite different from just about anything else. But very well made. The neck profile is very comfortable and the fit and finish is perfection. Makes Geddy's first Fender custom shop signature jazz bass look like a joke. In fact it was a joke....6 months after he recieved it from the custom shop I had it on my bench and had to order a new neck for it.....warped beyond salvage!

  6. Heyo!

Thought somebody might be interested to see what's on my workbench.

In for set-up, fret dress, bridge repairs and a new brass nut. Boy this thing is growly!

  7. I voted Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures.

Those 3 records profoundly influenced who I am musically.

Not to mention there are friends of mine on those covers biggrin.gif

Very nice job. The whole band is very tight, I can tell all 3 of you were very experienced by this point. Always nice to hear.

And surprisingly, the singer is pulling off Geddy's style very well. A lot of times you watch Rush covers on youtube when they try to sound like them, and sometimes it's good until someone starts singing. Usually really painful to listen to, but this guy wasn't at all. Strong singer.

    Thanks trenken!

I agree, that singer was really good. I loved playing with him. He didn't try to sound like Geddy, but he had a nice tone, nice grit and rarely pitchy.

The keyboardist is good too on "limelight"!

Ah...you found that one....hehe. The keyboard player was a good singer too. Just an anecdote, he bought Geddy's Oberheim OB-1 synth that was used for Moving Pictures. It sounds fantastic!
