  1. I will say this: I don't think it's an April Fools joke. I don't see any reason to post something speculative -- what's the point of April Fool's if you say, "Ha! Got ya!" however many days after April 1. But I know nothing. Collectively, nobody knows anything, as we float on this space rock in the middle of a meaningless universe.

  2. Here's a wonderful full-length show from the first leg of the Snakes And Arrows Tour.

    It was shot in 2007.

Nearly 10 years ago. Which equates to almost 25 percent of Rush's existence.

    I'm not crying. You're crying.

  3. I wouldn't say MP is my favorite album; I have a very difficult time figuring all that stuff out anyways. But I will say listening to Red Barchetta, especially the jam portion of it, can be very emotional. They're just so damn good, and that song is so damn good. There's a little bit of everything in that song: heavy guitar, harmonics, unique bass riffs, righteous fills, great lyrics, wonderful singing, synth, etc. It rocks from beginning to end, without rocking from beginning to end (if that makes any sense). The pacing is perfect. The arrangement is perfect. I'll never, ever get tired of that song.

For whatever reason, I always envision all the previous eras/photos/concerts of Rush during that segment -- accelerating at a very fast pace, too. And the way the song 'decelerates' into the final minute or so is so dang good, too.

*throws away tissues, returns to usual closed-off self*

    Cheers.

  5. Whenever I watch the intro video for the R40 shows, I can't seem to figure out what songs they're using from Presto and Vapor Trails. Does anyone know?

I don't hear anything from Presto, but there's a bit of One Little Victory and Earthshine.

Around the 50 second mark there's a song that I think might be from Presto.

Oh, you might be right. I thought that was Roll the Bones, but why would they splice two different parts from the same song together.

Its defintiely just Presto.. I believe its the break down just before "don't ask me I'm just improvising"

You nailed it. I had no clue it was Presto until you said something.

  6. Okay, so I can listen via Apple Music, but that's only a temporary solution. And, IMO, Apple Music is a poor recreation of Spotify.

But anytime I try to download my preorder (email says, 'Your Pre-Order of R40 Live is Ready!'), I get an error code 5002 from iTunes. Both on the computer and iPhone. It's incredibly frustrating. I've restarted iTunes, re-entered my credit card information, cleared the iTunes cache... And I'm completely out of ideas. Any 'solution' I've found online hasn't worked...

Anyone have any suggestions? Your help is greatly appreciated!

  7. What happened here??

Everything I've heard so far has been on YouTube, which I assume is the blu-ray audio mix, and it's been great. Everything is balanced (generally, there's never enough hi-hat), and given some prominence.

But hoooooly hell, is this iTunes mix a shit show. You can't hear anything! Well, to be specific, you can't hear drums. If anyone wants a barometer to judge listen to the first 30 seconds of spirit of radio. Everyone knows that, the opening section and how it should sound, by heart. This is a mess! The drums are at worst inaudible, and at best sound like they're in an echo chamber. There are awful mix choices all over the place. The synth in Distant Early Warning is pushed way to the back.

Edit: I did some comparisons on my computer, listening to the itunes version then the YouTube video, and I may have been a bit harsh. I think it isn't the CD mix, so much as some of the mixing choices for certain songs. The spirit of radio intro really threw me off, the drums are so bad. And the intro to YYZ is almost inaudible.

Some songs fare better. Headlong flight is mixed much better here than CA Live.

I agree 100 percent. I am significantly underwhelmed... The drums are a non-factor in most of the songs. Was hoping for more. But oh well. I only paid $20 for Hemispheres.

  8. f**k that 90s fratboy music

Classifying DMB as '90s fratboy music' ignores what it actually is. It's very unique, and pretty darn popular. The band itself is very talented. Beauford's one of the best. Dave's acoustic work is highly unique. Lessard is as solid a bassist as they come. Tim Reynolds can shred with just about anyone. LeRoi (when he was alive) had an iconic sound. Jeff Coffin and Rashawn Ross solo multiple times a night, and I don't think many people understand just how difficult that can be. No song/set is ever played the same, and switching it up 40+ nights each summer is pretty darn impressive.

Sure, some of the fans are obnoxious and can't get out of the decade. But go to a show, and you'll see a wide range of people grooving to the music as much as the person next to them. DMB's fan base is as diverse as any -- and very few actually have the 'fratboy' mantra.

If you hate DMB's sound, that's one thing. But casting them off because of a few of their fans -- that's another.

Obviously, I'm a huge fan. But I don't necessarily think I'm all too biased. I started listening to DMB as someone who generally prefers acoustic work over electric work. For me, DMB (and Dave, especially) is a huge influence on my own musical ventures (even if they're terrible and just a hobby).

As for who's better; it's impossible to tell. Beauford is very loose, and Neil is much more tight. I believe someone earlier posted this: neither would fit in the other's band. Jam bands need loose drummers. Beauford controls each and every tune on a given night... How long it's going to be, who solos longer than the other, etc. Neil (and Rush) are more methodical. They like to pick a set and stick to it.

Does that make one better than the other? Nope. Both are immensely talented, and fit perfectly within the system.

  9. This is one of the better live versions of the song. Geddy made some smart choices at various places in the song about how to avoid singing beyond his range.

If only he applied that logic to The Spirit of Radio...

There's really only so much he can do with TSOR...

  10. They should have kept the mistakes in the guitar solo to make it realistic. That's my only problem with it.

I wonder if a thread has been started about this topic. I kind of don't mind the "illusion" that the editors create that something is completely live, even when everybody knows or can find out exactly what has been altered or re-recorded. When I watch a live DVD, I have no trouble buying into the illusion. I don't know if I could enjoy the experience as much over and over again if I had to hear the same mistake each time. The mistake happened, but . . . if the live DVD is a kind of representation of the band at its best, that's okay with me.

Personally I would rather have the permanent representation recording be as perfect as they can make it without being obnoxious about it. I would also focus on a mistake if it was obvious.

Somewhere in between Eagles Live and Clockwork Angels Live works for me.
