Knoxville, TN to Albany, NY for the TfE tour and then Knoxville to Toronto the next summer.
I had lived down south for a good part of my adult life, so I always came back up to upstate NY (where I grew up and where I live now) to see shows with my brother and friends.
The toughest drive, though, was from South Bend, IN to Detriot for the Presto tour. I went with a bunch of college friends and our car broke down on the way up. Luckily, the garage got it fixed and we just made the end of Mr. Big. That was my first Rush concert and I was hell bend on not missing it.
Where in NY are you from? I see your location says "south of Rochester." Does that mean along the I-390 corridor?
My longest distance to a Rush show so far has been either to Hershey (2011) or Bridgeport (2012)...not sure which one's farther away, and am too lazy to look it up. Usually Rush doesn't play more than 2.5 hours away from me (Buffalo to the west, or Albany/Saratoga area to the east). The closest was about 10-12 miles, from East Syracuse to the State Fairgrounds just west of Syracuse (technically we were coming from the airport in N. Syr. after my gf and I picked up a friend).
A small town called Honeoye Falls. We always have to go to SPAC, Darrien Lake (they haven't been there in several years), Buffalo or Toronto, other than the lucky stop at the State Fair a couple years ago. That was a great show.

8. Headlong Flight is the best Rush song ever. Period. And you can't argue with me on that, 'cause I got a shirt.
After I saw them in Buffalo this tour, I thought the same thing. It was just UNBELIEVABLE live. I definitely rank it up there with one of my all time favorites.

Thanks for posting these. Awesome. That was a bizarre mix for the encore. I never would have imagined that group together.

I've found the speeches and the Foos 2112...any help?

Me too. I totally visualize this each time I hear it.
I kind of imagine Red Barchetta, too.

I really like all 3, with Counterparts and TfE much better overall than RtB.
I was thinking the other day about how you could make a really good album with the top songs from each album. I hate to admit it, but there are few songs in the era that I would say are not my favorites.
My album would be:
Dreamlines
Bravado
RtB
Where's My Thing
Animate
Cut to the Chase
Stick it Out
Between Sun and Moon
Leave That Thing Alone
Driven
Half the World
Totem
Wow - that was really hard to pick I guess.

We can only hope that those clippings are lying around somewhere waiting for a rainy day fund release.
I'm even pissed they cut the couple of the song out of ASoH.
Just imagine how unbelievable it would be to have the ESL and GuP videos complete. What awesome shows those were.

the band were asked this exact question once and their answer was Natural Science..
That's funny. I was watching the Snakes video version of NS and that is what made think of the question. I think this is definitely a tough one and one of my favorites, too.

I've always liked Alex the best. Not sure if it is because he is the "underdog" or why.
I do think he has been undervalued his entire career.
I was pleased to see so many "stars" give him props in the doc.
-
I thought I would throw another lame question out there since this is a slow period...
What do you think is the band's most technically challeging song for all three of them?
I have never played the drums, guitar or bass, although I do play a mean trombone, but I would have to guess that is is one of these:
La Villa
Freewill
Cygnus Book 2
Those are just my guesses...

I've been listening to a lot of my boots and videos recently and this thought popped into my head - trying to compare how the band sounded live from tour to tour. I was taking into account - Geddy's voice, their playing and the overall mix of the set list. Really random categories, but that is what I was using.
I'd have to say that I think their best live sound was either the TfE Tour or Vapor Trails. I would say that the set lists probably were much better in 81 and prior as they were all our old favorites, and the band's playing was outstanding, although raw at times, but Geddy's voice was too out of pitch.
His voice really matured post Signals, I think, and their playing was great. Although I love the set lists on those 80's and early 90's tours, I had others I liked more.
I really think their playing was at an all time best around that time, Geddy's voice was solid and the overall mix of both of the set lists left little to complain about.
Just a thought to throw out there on a Monday...

How about for an intro? Mine is the nuts and bolts to the 2001 Theme (the actual name alludes me) on the Counterparts tour. I get chills everytime I see it.
-
I think so, too.
I haven't noticed what he says live, but I think the studio says sounds.
Although, I've been wrong on just about every other word that I hear him sing vs what the actual lyric is, so don't go by what I say!

I agree. I would love to go see Styx, say, as I love their greatest hits, but I would be completely bored when they played deep cuts or their new material.
I don't know if it is the italian catholic in me, but I feel guilty sometimes at Rush shows loving the show, then I think about all the people that came to hear Moving Pictures that have to be bored out of their mind. I remember feeling that way this tour. I was really into CA, but just felt uncomfortable because I could tell a lot of people around me were bored. I was up close, too. I was irritated that people even closer to the stage were bored.

Ah - you guys are brutal. I will crawl back into my shell and not post for another year. I guess I did deserve that though...
For the record, I enjoyed both tours.
-
Ha - that is true. I did like the R30 medley and wouldn't mind something like that again if the reason not to play the songs is because Ged can't sing them. Oh how I would have loved to have the 4 slots taken by Feedback song for something else...although I will have to say that they smoked Crossroads.

I was watching the ASoH video last night (which I still love) and I was wondering how badly it must have sucked for the fans that only were into the classic period to sit through. I appreciate all the phases of their career and find myself really into new stuff sometimes and really into old stuff sometimes....
Anyway, I geeked out and looked up that tour to compare it to the Clockwork Angels tour to see which concert statistically would have been worse to watch if you did not like new Rush. I was considering anything after Signals to be non-classic period.
On the HyF tour, there were 10 classic songs out of 23 total for 43%. I considered the parts of medleys and the parts of 2112 to be seperate songs.
On the CA tour, there were only 10 out of 29 songs from the classic period, for 34%. I sort of felt like CA was ASoH2 with CA thrown in.
So statistically, if you do not like new Rush, CA sucked 20% more than ASoH.
I guess I have no point other than curiosity to how others felt about the tours...

The Weapon
in Rush
I think The Weapon is the best song on Signals. I LOVE the synth parts and the guitar solo. Actually, i love the drum beat... Ah hell, I loove all of it.
I was in the audience in Toronto (Maple Leaf Gardens) when the GuP live video was taped. It was probably the best Rush concert I ever saw out of 27 or so. (After MP iin '81. That was insane.)
Great song!!
I really wish we had that full concert on video...That was my first Rush video and I wore out the VHS. I was so glad when they re-released it.

The Weapon
in Rush
Every time I watch the GuP video, I start off watching the Weapon just kind of thinking that it is an ok song. When Alex kicks in at the end, though, the song goes to a whole other level. What a great, emotionally moving solo. It makes the song.
Does anyone else feel this way about the song?

This pre-sale blows. I was in there right at noon and there were no floor reserved seats available. I am pissed.

I really think Manhattan Project is a great song, it just doesn't do it for me live...Now Dreamline really cranks me up and I would have prefered that - but can't complain.
-
3. The "Middletown Dreams", "The Pass", "Manhattan Project", "The Wreckers" set list was played. There's always moments when I wished they would play "that" song instead of "this" song, but with such a deep catalog, I've learned to just enjoy the heck out of the show and not complain.
4. I did think it was highly odd that they played 5 songs from "Power Windows". I mean, I love the album and I loved the songs. But 5?? I think I would have been slightly happier if they would have played only 2 from that record, and then dug out a song from "Counterparts", "A Farewell to Kings" and/or even "Test For Echo".
I agree with both of these sentiments. I don't think there has ever been or will ever be a show when there isn't one song I would have rather heard, but I am just being a spoiled ass. How can you complain? There is bound to be 1 or 2 in a 3 hour show.
I, too, thought the 5 of of PW was odd. I love that album, but I am not so sure all of the songs are as good live. It was definitely good to hear Grand Designs, but could have passed on Big Money and Manhattan Project - again spoiled ass - just saying.
What always bugs me about the Count Floyd intro for "The Weapon"
