    Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon (The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay) with a collection of non-fiction essays about being a son, husband, and father.

    I've read his stuff before, respect him as an author, and feel we're at the same place on the "masculinity scale," so these essays are easy for me to relate to.

    Even though I'm a girl, I really want to read that. I think it's the cover. Amazing.

    I'm reading this one now. It's... superb on every level.

    I think this dude is trying his hand at sarcasm.  I saw him posting elsewhere and made a feeble pass with some Ayn Rand/Sebastian Bach referencing.  It was lame-o, but I'll give him a green card for the shtick.  I smiled.  Hey, I like it when people try.

    Yes, Objectivist is definitely one of those guys who isn't nearly as smart/funny/clever/intellectual as he thinks he is. When those guys try sarcasm, it's usually pretty funny...but for the wrong reasons.

    At least we observers can enjoy it for those wrong reasons.

    I hope you're not implying that men who like other men are incapable of being manly.

    So far, I'd say you're not doing so well in this thread. But you are somewhat entertaining, so by all means keep going. I'd like to see a train wreck by the end of the night. yes.gif

    My thoughts exactly. I'm waiting for it... waiting.... waiting...

    I will offer up "The Second Coming" by Yeats because it's theme and imagery is likely to be similar to some of the religious work you might select from Milton. I think we should focus our discussion on poetics and why we think the respective work has strengths in these areas.

    The Second Coming

    Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
    Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
    The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
    When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
    Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
    A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
    A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
    Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
    Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
    The darkness drops again; but now I know
    That twenty centuries of stony sleep
    Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
    And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
    Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

    Surprisingly the stuff I'm narrowing down to are not that religious (I cut out Lycidas, sorry. I figure everyone always chooses that one, but I just find it choppy).

    Milton is not my favorite poet, I should say. I should also say I consider Vergil the greatest poet and I hate him. And I hate that I him. It's so sad.

    (Donne is my favorite poet, but I don't consider him the greatest poet. I wish though)

    I also wish I thought Blake was the greatest poet.

    I swear I'm working on this! I'm having trouble narrowing down to one single thing. I'm down to three pieces.

    Pick whatever you like ... no worries.

    The problem with evaluating a writer like Virgil is that you are really evaluating a translation of his work. This is difficult, particularly with poetry where the language is such a criticial element of the text.

    Nope. I read it in Latin. I made that text my bitch, as it were.

    Very impressive!!!

    I took a year-long course in Old English my senior year of undergrad that culminated with a reading of Beowulf in the original text.

    Still hated it!

    That's sort of how I feel about Vergil and those guys. I really respect Vergil, and as I said, I think he's the penultimate poet, but I hate him. I took six years of Latin and you can't get away from him, then I took about three years nonstop of British literature, still can't get away from him... still hate him. But I can't deny his influence. I even wrote a paper on the word "causa" in the invocations of THE AENEID and PARADISE LOST.

    I am jealous of your skills though. That's quite amazing.

    I've always wondered how guitarist in the 70's were able to move around so well and not fall flat on their face when they wore platform shoes...

    Woah. I feel like my mind has been blown with this thought.

    When I was a voice major we used to have to watch ourselves sing to see what dumb things we would do. It was amusing and embarrassing.

    Don't you think it would be epic to see Geddy in a Loreal commercial? Seriously, look at this:

    http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y371/Priestess-of-Syrinx/Gorgeous%20Geddy/Geddy_London_1992.jpg

    That hair!!! How I want to touch it, run my fingers through it... ohmy.gif drool1.gif

    The commercial would go something like: "Leereal, because he's worth it." You bet he is! wink.gif

    It's a shame that Geddy is a man, since those commercials are meant for women. But if he were a woman, he'd be the most beautiful woman I have ever seen! wub.gif

    I want his hair so badly. He has better hair than me, a sixteen-year-old girl. How does that work? wacko.gif

    Happy (early) Thanksgiving. I was going to make it funny... until I discovered L'Oreal has a line of men's hair products. And then I realized that was funny in and of itself.

    Garbo - they ARE manly, arent they? Pity you can't do a hair transfer ... poor lamb has enough there to cover what's missing up top wink.gif

    Hey now, the missing patch of hair is cute. I like his lil' grin too, like he's done something naughty like a little kid. Dammit, I feel like I'm converting...

  11. OMGZ, a man got me into RUSH!!! I fail at life!!! wink.gif

    When I went and saw Muse I ran into a Rush fan (basically I saw his shirt). We talked for a while and then he stopped me (I was, like, going a mile a minute. What? Someone had given me coffee and I was excited) and he stared at me and then said, "Wait a minute, but you're a girl." I nearly lifted my shirt and showed him my boobs just to be like, "Yep, I am!" But I decided to keep whatever dignity I had left, which was minimal, and instead just kind of stared blankly and agreed.

    Oh yeah, and we fist bumped. I like to fist bump people. I feel like this seals us for life, sort of like a blood bond, but not. Don't expect it unless I like you though.
