This girl I have classes with at my school (and have actually gotten to know somewhat well the past four years) is getting national recognition... and I find it terribly annoying.
She's a great person, yes. She started a beauty pageant for disabled and mentally ill girls, yes. That's all wonderful. But she gets to go to L.A. and New York and wins about a thousand awards? And then comes back to school and brags to me about getting Chris Pine's arm around her shoulder? (And this girl knows I love Star Trek more than life.) I'm sorry, she's a nice girl and all, but she got to be on freaking national television tonight. There are a lot, lot, LOT of amazing volunteers and people our age working for great causes. And what do they get? Induction in National Honors Society? Maybe a piece of paper and a cord at graduation?
I guess I'm not really mad with her (aside from the Chris Pine part, lol) as I am with society in general. Where's the recognition for the people that go off and make a difference, but maybe don't get it out there and make a big deal about it? What she's doing is wonderful, but is it really all that more special that what other people have done day in and day out, too?
I guess it's just my jealousy speaking...

Edit: Oh, oh, and it gets worse! I heard a rumour that (A) NU's quarterback, the redshirted freshman Taylor Martinez, might be transferring to a Cali school. I know he had a bad night at the Big XII championship but that's no excuse for cowardice! And (cool.gif, also heard a rumour that Coach Bo Pelini has been "in talks" with the Florida recruiting people. He can't leave us!!! We need him!!!!

Been there on the jealousy thing - both in high school and professionally.

I think everyone has. If nothinng else, being aware of the fact that you're jealous can be a reminder/motivator to refocus on your own performance. (I'm not saying you don't work hard - what little I know of you indicates exactly the opposite).

Everyone's talents are different. Somewhere there's probably someone who wishes they had your writing skills.

Oh - and the girl I was always jealous of in high school, who always seemed to have everything land in her favor? Saw her recently. Let's just say things have evened out considerably. wink.gif (Plus she hasn't aged well AT ALL. Yeah, call me catty. I admit it).

    you're catty cat.gif

Well, they think my Mom has tumors on her pituitary gland. It's been a rough twenty-four hours. sad.gif

  2. My mom called me to inform me her doctor sent her to the ER thinking she was having mini-heart attacks (since she is in congestive heart failure). Thankfully, she wasn't, but she's spending the night in the hospital with further tests. They think it's an electrical misfiring or a blockage.

I also think I need a brain transplant. Like. Now.

  3. I'd add Stagecoach as well as some new ones, especially because Westerns have taken a new turn.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

The Proposition (especially for the philosophical implications)

    Legends of the Fall

    No Country for Old Men

Paris, TX wub.gif (I actually studied this in a Western film/literature course)

Dances With Wolves (not exactly a Western, but still)

My favorite film though, so much love for this film.

Casey Affleck should have won the Oscar

Damn. Maybe I should go watch this...

    QUOTE (garbo @ Oct 28 2010, 11:33 AM)
This thread is for those remaining six of us in the Universe who love British literature, especially Ren lit (maybe a little into the satire period with Swift and Pope).  Not Austen though, except maybe Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and the other one.

I primarily studied Donne and Milton with a little Herbert, Marvel and the like on the side, but my main man was definitely Donne.  In fact, I was so obsessed I graffitied my first iPod with "Pleasure is none if not diversified" on it (Elegie 17 I think?  His Elegies were all about the sexytimes, unlike what normal Elegies are supposed to be about).  That's actually referring to women, but you know, I know no one reads Donne so I just lied and said it referred to my high musical standards and tastes.  wacko.gif  However, my specialities were his holy sonnets, mainly sexuality and religion, with a subspecialty in "ravishment."  Now that I'm on break I prefer reading him for fun, although I still prefer his metaphysical stuff.  I'm currently reading his sermons, which are insane and rough- I can barely get through one at a time without wanting to run out into traffic.  If I do a Ph.D., I might look into if the guy was cuckoo.

Milton- well, if the Rolling Stones weren't referencing Milton's Satan in "Sympathy for the Devil" then I don't know what was going on.  But yes, Satan was pretty awesome, hence why if you don't do grad work on Milton you only read the first two books of PL and think Satan is the epic hero (he's not, but still, we all like him the best).  My grad work on Milton was in Typology (WTF) and a little on gender studies because that's what women are supposed to do so I studied why Eve instigated the sexytimes and what that meant for Milton (hence why lady scholars of Milton will fight you Bruce Lee style for insinuating Milton was a sexist- he wasn't.  He also has homo-erotic love going on between the angels in book seven when they can change gender at will).

I also have this secret belief that if Milton were alive today that he would love film since PL is so descriptive (he would probably write graphic novels too, but that's just my smart ass opinion not shared by all).  I also think Donne would be a nudist- again, smart ass opinion.

Anyway, I think I just exposed my secret nerdiness.  I'm going to go hide in a corner somewhere and never come out.  I hope I can find the other six Brit lit fans.

    cheer.gif  DISCUSS!!

I was an English major in college back in the late 80s-early 90s. I enjoyed a lot of the Medieval stuff because I had a prof that could read in the old style. It was so smooth sounding. Though I was not a big fan of the Faity Queene, I did enjoy most of the Canterbury Tales and Le Morte D'Arthur.

Aw, yay! Glad you enjoyed it. biggrin.gif I love Malory, especially his graphic descriptions of battle and sex. wink.gif

I need to find Finding It (ha!) so we can get this battle going!

  7. My state needs to make up its mind. My horse has no winter coat and then it dropped into the thirties the other night and she nearly froze. Then it got hot, now it's in the thirties again. Today it was sunny and in the fifties. Gorgeous day.
  8. New dog!! He technically belongs to my roommate, but we kind of share pets. His name is Jack and he is a 90 pound Black Lab/German Shepherd/Wolf cross, rescued from extermination. He is terrified of the cats and will climb in your lap because he is convinced he is the size of my two pound guinea pig. tongue.gif

Here he is proving he has super awesome manners (he is only a year old).

  9. WTF!!! We need one dedicated to horses now.

If you look just right you can see Clara beside Suzie (she's hiding beside the bookcase). She's convinced Suzie is her baby. Suzie does not concur with this sentiment and bites her.

  11. I thought the fourth film was hilarious, especially Harrison Ford trying to run around and be a badass.

But like the recent bad Star Wars films, no... no... no. There should be no fifth film. I like the old ones, even Temple of Doom, as bad as it is.

  12. Boobs, books, and beer? Well, you'll certainly get the dudes here. Look at that rhyme scheme! I'm so talented.

I could think of tons of ways to make this place the most awesomest place ever but it would offend about 95% of the boards. And it would be strictly academic and would involve non-coolish literature.

    Oh yeah, and 1984.

But... Wormtail dies in the cellar right then in the book. Harry tells him he owes him for saving his life in PoA and Wormtail's metal hand turns on him and chokes him, allowing Harry and the others to escape the dungeon

facepalm.gif I'm such a dunce. I totally misread what you wrote initially.

I think it was one of those "What should we leave in?" moments. As I said, I initially thought he died, which aggravated me since, like you said I thought it was a poor way for him to end, but then a friend pointed out to him that he was simply stunned. I'm wondering if they'll give him a grander death, however, that's really veering away from the books. I keep reminding myself there is a second part and things are going to be different.

  14. Head's up, Rushians, the philosophers who can't make a buck are publishing Rush and Philosophy. I kind of lean away from these books (they usually contain articles written by grad students or professors who can't get tenured and need money- I kid you not! And I'm not being mean), but hey it's Rush and there likely will be a'plenty of Sartre to amuse my Existential soul.

It's available for pre-order on Amazon.com where the editor for the article explicating the book misspelled Neil's name. Obviously a sure winner!

I will offer up "The Second Coming" by Yeats because it's theme and imagery is likely to be similar to some of the religious work you might select from Milton. I think we should focus our discussion on poetics and why we think the respective work has strengths in these areas.

    The Second Coming

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Surprisingly the stuff I'm narrowing down to are not that religious (I cut out Lycidas, sorry. I figure everyone always chooses that one, but I just find it choppy).

Milton is not my favorite poet, I should say. I should also say I consider Vergil the greatest poet and I hate him. And I hate that I him. It's so sad.

(Donne is my favorite poet, but I don't consider him the greatest poet. I wish though)

I also wish I thought Blake was the greatest poet.

I swear I'm working on this! I'm having trouble narrowing down to one single thing. I'm down to three pieces.

Pick whatever you like ... no worries.

The problem with evaluating a writer like Virgil is that you are really evaluating a translation of his work. This is difficult, particularly with poetry where the language is such a criticial element of the text.

Nope. I read it in Latin. I made that text my bitch, as it were.

    Very impressive!!!

I took a year-long course in Old English my senior year of undergrad that culminated with a reading of Beowulf in the original text.

    Still hated it!

That's sort of how I feel about Vergil and those guys. I really respect Vergil, and as I said, I think he's the penultimate poet, but I hate him. I took six years of Latin and you can't get away from him, then I took about three years nonstop of British literature, still can't get away from him... still hate him. But I can't deny his influence. I even wrote a paper on the word "causa" in the invocations of THE AENEID and PARADISE LOST.

I am jealous of your skills though. That's quite amazing.

My skills? Hah! I had a two semester course in Old English as an undergrad just a few (ahem) years back. Not sure I would call them skills. laugh.gif

    I still admire those skills!

Okay, I think I finally figured what I'm going to use. After a lot of thought and going through my journals I outed two Satan soliloquies, several sonnets, and Milton's own narcissistic poems about politicians with this, yes, this. I have my reasons.

From Book IV of Paradise Lost.

With thee conversing I forget all time,

All seasons and their change, all please alike.

Sweet is the breath of morn, her rising sweet,

With charm of earliest birds; pleasant the sun

When first on this delightful land he spreads

His orient beams, on herb, tree, fruit, and flower,

Glistring with dew; fragrant the fertile earth

After soft shower; and sweet the coming on

Of grateful evening mild, then silent night

With this her solemn bird and this fair moon,

And these the gems of heav'n, her starry train:

But neither breath of morn when she ascends

With charm of earliest birds, nor rising sun

On this delightful land, nor herb, fruit, flower,

Glistring with dew, nor fragrance after showers,

Nor grateful evening mild, nor silent night

With this her solemn bird, nor walk by moon,

Or glittering starlight without thee is sweet.

  16. Bump.

I was watching a special on SNL, and although I loved SNL (not really the new stuff), but sometimes I'm amazed at how similar SNL and SCTV are. And I'm pretty certain that some things were ripped from SCTV. I'm not complaining because I watch both, but it's just amusing.

That being said, Rick Moranis in pretty much anything is brilliance.

  17. QUOTE (Lost In Xanadu @ Nov 29 2010, 12:22 PM)
Ok, so why did they change the way Wormtail dies? The book had him choking himself with his silver hand... Why change that??

Also - why have they not mentioned that the reason they are being found is because the word "Voldemort" is cursed and being traced? I guess that plays to the "you should have read the book" mentality, but I think that would clear a lot up for those that may not have read the book.

I believe Chapter 24 ends with Voldemort finding the Elder Wand, and the fact his name is "cursed" comes out well before that - so I doubt that fact is being "saved" for the final movie.

He isn't dead. I thought that too until someone pointed it out to me and then I saw it again and you realize he's been stunned by Dobby. Also, random, did you pick up on Bellatrix's hair falling on Hermione's face? No one got that!

I was trying to figure that out too because I think that's vital, however, in adapting you leave certain things out. But yeah, I didn't really like that because his name has been important since the beginning and I like how circular Rowling has made everything. Oh well.

I actually liked having the film end with him finding the Elder Wand. It was very climactic and really put emphasis on the Elder Wand (especially because the Elder Wand does basically nothing to Harry in the end). And I love Ralph Fiennes. Hehe.

I hate that films do nothing to mention Grindewald before because his duel with Dumbledore is legendary and then *poof* oh yeah, we forgot to mention this guy. I really can't complain because I own all of the movies (and the Special Edition movies at that and I was older when the books and movies started coming out. Shame), but it seemed neglectful not to at least mention it in the sixth film. I really felt that any flaws in 7.1 were a result of the sixth film.

I'm so looking forward to the Battle at Hogwarts mainly because I want to see Maggie Smith and Alan Rickman. wub.gif

I liked it, it was a bit rushed, but a I would say it was an improvement over Half Blood Prince.

Really? See, I thought this was the first one since maybe the 2nd movie that WASN'T rushed, and that's because they did what they should have been doing since book 4 - make them into two movies. The movies for Goblet, Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince were way too rushed and way too much was cut. This was the first one in a long time where I felt like they got it right.

EXCELLENT movie. Can't wait for part two! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

    Agreed wholeheartedly.
