  1. Happy Birthday VT!! I love this album!!

For me it marked the return of RUSH...after fearing that they were done forever. It also documented Neil's personal journey through a period more tragic than anyone could ever imagine. I'm not too tough to admit that many of those songs have reduced me to tears over the years. Try to listen to How it is while thinking about Neil's losses and grief and not feel the power of those emotions.

Ljudet Innan is my favorite as well. I also love the title track.

Yeah, they are both great. The title track is my current favorite. I must have listened to this 5 times over the weekend, different formats (vinyl, CD, Blu-ray).

I think the album is excellent. I don't think of it as mellow or ambient, it's powerful. I don't notice the almost total absence of drums and therefore I don't miss them. It's hard to see how they'd fit with this music. My only complaint is there's not enough Akefeldt vocals.

I agree with you on all counts here TD!

I believe I'll upgrade my initial vote!

  4. Bought the first album when it first came out. It was OK, when compared with most of the crap that came out in the 80s, but I never even bought it on CD...if that tells you anything.

The first album was their best effort and it has no staying power. It aged very badly. I haven't even tried to listen to it in over a decade.

I saw the show from 2nd row center. I loved it.

Yes you might miss a little bit on the outside edges, but the Wall is so big and so overwhelming up close, it's like being inside the show. The sound and the visuals are so crystal clear it's amazing.

I have heard people say it's better further back. I suppsoe it is all just individual taste. I thought it was great.

Friday I will be seeing it from the front row, so I'll let you know if that's any better or worse.

Thanks for the response. I'll come back 2 weeks from Weds. after seeing it and share my thoughts. And the "inside the show" thing sounds cool.

Looking forward to your report from the front row.

    Tomorrow Night!!!

Enjoy the show dude!! Seeing it with anyone I know?

As a matter of fact, I was able to persuade a crazy survivalist we know and love to leave his mountain compound and join me in Modern Gomorrah for the show.

Excellent article, but it makes me sad when people try to associate musical expression and creativity with political ideologies. Prog rock, like all music, transcends petty politics.

I agree completely. In fact, I was really digging the article until he got to the part about how conservatives (such as himself), "cherish real diversity, the ability of the individual person to be what God created her or him to be, to express himself in excellence, and to rise to the highest things." That very well may be (probably not), however he needs a good dose of "get over yourself"!

He totally lost credibility by inserting his politics.

  8. I got my "official" version in the mail on Tuesday (day of release). I was finally able to listen to the 5.1 disc last night. I echo what Owl said about the amazing guitar work. There are some really great guitar passages all over this album. It sounds fantastic in 5.1, I had no doubt about that, considering the artists involved.

I've come a long way since first hearing Drag Ropes in that I feel like I could listen to this album at any time. OK, sure there are times when I crave a good dose of \m/ but this album really stands out from just about any other style of music I've listened to. It seems to defy classification.

I also agree with what Owl said about passive listening (though I did indeed listen to it on the drive to work this morning). It does require your full attention to take it all in. I think, once the music has sunk in a bit, it'll make fine background music to mundane tasks (driving, cooking, sitting at your desk at work...). However, to be fully appreciated, it needs that extra level of attention.

  9. After reading this review, I'm more excited than ever about CA!! Love that they've included some acoustic guitar in there...very interested to hear what they did between Caravan and BU2B.

    In short...I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

  10. I've liked it more with each listen. I hadn't listened to it in a couple of days so I just put it on just now...I like it more than I did when I first heard it.

I'll probably cool it for a while, so I don't get burned out on it. Can't wait to hear it in the context of the album!

  11. I gave it an Almost Awesome, could be promoted to full on Awesome with enough time.

I have to say, after seeing the video for Drag Ropes, I wasn't overly impressed. However, after hearing the entire album on a good system (opposed to tiny computer speakers), I've changed my mind completely.

I'm not even sure what you'd call this music, but I like it a lot. There are some incredibly intricate guitar parts throughout. Not sure what else to say about it right now other than it's going to take some time to digest it.

I can't wait to hear it in 5.1. Hope my delivery gets here today!!

If  2.gif is confident enough to play CA in its entirety, it must be a pretty bitchin' album. I just hope we hear one or two (Hopefully NONE but I know I'm in the minority) MP songs tops.

Did your friend say anything about Signals being played prominently?

they felt confident playing 9 tunes from s & a on that tour and that turned out to be a heaping pile.

    confused13.gif I loved the S&A tour. confused13.gif

Wait what? It arrived already? Mine hasn't even been shipped yet! What gives? It says it'll be shipped the release date, May 8.

Yeah, my copy has yet to arrive as well. Did you order the Roadrunner edition by any chance? Cause did and I'm starting to worry cause it looks like everyone's getting their copies in the post now.

No mine hasn't arrived yet. It's been leaked.

I hope to get mine next week. I ordered the Deluxe Edition, with vinyl, thought RoadRunner.

Got mine in the mail today. I do like it and its pretty much what I expected but its going to need more listens. I love the title track and Ljudet Innan. Its not going to be album of the year but it may be in my top 10.

Yeah, it's pretty good stuff. Not all of the songs are like Drag Ropes (which is actually growing on me), so that's a good thing. Needs to be played on a good system though. There are a lot of intricacies in the instrumentation.

Just got back from the show here in Austin..... wow... simply amazing..  I still have not picked up my jaw.

    Excellent!

I'm going again next Friday. I'm really looking forward to it. The sound and the technology is just out of this world.

Enjoy it! I absolutely LOVED it! The best show I've ever seen, production wise. Simply amazing.

Get some good pics UT...we'll review them in SJ during the RASH meetup.

I think one reason why a lot of people were expecting it to be heavier is because Mike Portnoy was rumored to be involved.

Actually, I never remember hearing about Portnoy being involved with the project. That would have run the project into the ground, seeing as how MP is taking a nu-metal turn in his drumming. I just can't see Portnoy work with either MA or SW for something like Storm Corrosion. Just doesn't seem right.

I was expecting this to be heavy for a simple reason: this project combines two artists who are known to make heavy music. To hear something so mellow from the duo is unexpected, but I must admit that it IS refreshing.

I have no problem with it not being heavy. GFD isn't especially heavy but it does have its moments of tension building. And I love GFD!

I'm just hoping the remaining songs on the SC album are more varied(?) than Drag Ropes. Not that I don't like it, it has good parts, but I have a feeling I'm not going to visit it often...since is so subdued.

...and, as I said before, the overall mood of the music reminds me of a fall/winter scene...so there's that, considering it's spring/summer now.
