Just downloaded a vinyl rip of "Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend!". Was NOT expecting such a sudden and hype-less release. The 10 year wait was worth it.

Yeah, I just heard about the release a couple of weeks ago and immediately put in my order. I received the CD on Friday and it blew me away. It's true to the GY!BE standard! They take their form of ambient/drone to a different place than most.

  2. Just now getting around to posting here.

The show was incredible. The sound was amazing, especially for Scottrade Center which is often muddy.

The crowd reaction was also inspirational. I was happy that they responded so well to the new stuff, even though it was clearly unfamiliar to most. From where I was standing, most of the crowd were on their feet the entire time!

One of the best RUSH shows I've ever seen for all of the above reasons!

  3. You guys have it right! There's so much to love about what RUSH has done in the past and what they are currently doing with CA, it seems petty and ridiculous to complain about what songs they aren't playing. They are RUSH. Because of all the great music they've given me over the years, I will always go see them live. I hope they tour for as long as I live but I know they'll stop some day. Until either I die or they stop touring...I'll be there!!!

Yeah! The fact is if they decide to play Lamneth, The Necromancer, the Cygnus books, etc All the casuals will go WTF at the concerts just as they are going WTF with the synth stuff. I have a bootleg from the Counterparts tour and I can clearly hear a guy going wtf is this? And another guy yelling Hemishpheres!!! and the guy goes WHAT?! and the die hard goes Hemispheres!!!! Hemispheres!!!! lol

Welcome to the world of rock-fandom. It happens with every single band that has been around for more than a couple of decades. It has a whole lot less to do with the age of the fan than it does the respect the fan has for the band.

To add on to this...it probably also has something to do with the IQ of the person yelling for certain songs. What headlining band actually takes requests anyway laugh.gif You have to be really dense to think that RUSH is going to play a song because they heard you yelling it.

Ged's up there on stage and thinks, "Damn, Hemispheres! Yes! Let's throw that together right now for this guy screaming his lungs out".

From my experience there's a segment of middle aged people (not everybody!) that pretty much thinks their old ways/ideas are superior to the new ways/ideas and dont like to venture out of their comfort zone.

It's obviously not everybody. For example: I see people in their 60's with their ipads all the time here in NYC but there is a segment that doesn't even want to learn how to use a computer. They just don't see the point of a lot of new things and gadgets. Hey my father is one of them. Everything from the old ways and their youth is in their minds just much better. They are very protective of their experiences and i think a lot of these older folks are the ones complaining. I dont think it's the young Rush fans doing the bulk of the complaining.

For these types of older folks Rush is Fly by Night, Hemispheres, Exit Stage Left, etc If Rush plays something else is just not as good simply because it's new to them and was not a part of their youth Rush experience. There just not as open to new things because they think that old>new in everything in their lives. That's my opinion based on my experiences dealing with older people in my family and at work.

Maybe it's true in your experience but I'll tell you that most of my friends actively seek out new experiences, new technology, and new music. Could be that I just hang around with people who are cool cool.gif

You may be confusing the causal RUSH fan from the 70's/80's (the ones who have taken a "break" from RUSH and just recently picked them back up) with the avid fans who have followed them their entire career. I've overheard people at RUSH shows lamenting the lack of "old" stuff...and those people were actually younger than me. So, I know they are out there and they come in all ages. When you have such a huge back catalog, that's going to happen, it's completely unavoidable.

Another thing to consider is that many people just aren't music junkies and can only get into what they are familiar with. Even fewer people are RUSH junkies (although sites like this make you wonder). So...there are a lot of other factors, other than age, that contribute to what someone prefers to hear at a live concert.

I saw Pocupine Tree play The Incident in it's entirety and that was their 10th record! Not all the fans had the record but everybody was glued watching and listening to every note being played because it's their favorite band performing their art live. I still dont get how you can see your favorite artist live performing their craft in person and have so much hate for it.

The only reasonable explanation i have is simply age. When you are young you are more open to change and you want to discover and explore. I guess as people grow older they think they know it all and dont want to listen to new ideas...I'm 30 and I hope that when im 50 years old like these fans i dont become as narrow minded and shallow as the people that complain about the setlist and still will be able to appreciate all kinds of new art.

I completely disagree with your age theory. I'm 49 and I'll be hanging on every note that RUSH plays.

BTW, I was also at quite a few of those PT performances of The Incident...I loved every one of them!

Being narrow minded and shallow has nothing to do with age.

I should have looked at this forum a long time ago.

Another one of my favorite bands. I have a playlist on my phone that's a mix of Godspeed, Mogwai, Tangerine Dream, Explosions IN the Sky, and other stuff along those lines, and it's good for everything from background music at work, to video games to cool10.gif

Did anybody get to see them on their reunion tour last year? They were really good although I was a bit bummed they didn't play "Moya" at the Philly date.

Has anybody listened to their other band, A Silver Mt. Zion? It's a similar style but heavier overall and it has vocals. The singer is terrible, but in a way similar to Bob Dylan where it fits the music.

I really like GY!BE but I got one of Thee Silver Mt. Zion albums, Horses in the Sky, and just couldn't get into it.

The singer is the lead guy from Godspeed, Efrim Menuck. I think the style is purposefully off-key and disjointed. I like the music far more than the vocals and lyrics.

GY!BE reunited not long ago for a couple of shows but I don't think they've recorded anything for quite a long time. Yanqui UXO and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven are my favorites.

So, last night I want to see the Deftones and System Of A Down.

I'm not a big SOAD fan. I like the songs I hear on the radio. I went to the show to see the Deftones. Sucked that they were considered the opening band and only played 50 minutes to SOADs two hours. sad.gif

Man they rock! I love how they mesh an eerie dream like sound with a fat, heavy sound. Kind of grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. 1022.gif

    Any other Deftones fans?

I saw them with Alice in Chains and Mastodon a couple of years ago. I have to say, they stole the show. I was very very very impressed. Love 'em!!

Without a doubt, and one of the absolutely best albums in creation:

    http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f72/rushgoober5/rushgoober6/lizard2.jpg

I guess I can understand why some people don't rate this higher.  It's ridiculously complex, and therefore, perhaps a bit difficult listening, but that doesn't stop me from loving it.  In fact, that's why I love it.  It's SO involved and complex, but really beautiful too.  Unmatched IMHO, pure genius...

Over 5 years later and my post is still true. Their very best album and one of the best albums of all time. For some reason, this simple but obvious truth continues to elude most people. confused13.gif

We may disagree on some things but not this thing!

  11. What SW was able to do with a notoriously bad master tape, is nothing short of phenomenal! It's like hearing a whole new album. I haven't listened to it in a while but it's never sounded so good (and I have the original vinyl as well as the DCC gold master/remasters/etc.).
  12. QUOTE (GeminiRising79 @ Jul 9 2012, 03:48 PM)
It has nothing to do with being cheap. Its the principal. I refuse to buy the CD unless I first find it worthy of being bought, period. Why should I financially support Rush if I feel the album is a half-effort on the part of the members of Rush? The recording quality is another issue. From what I've heard thus far, CA is easily at the bottom of the Rush catalog.

You shouldn't...so don't buy it. If you want a CD quality copy, go to Best Buy and shoplift it. If you're that "principled" about it you should at LEAST have the integrity to steal the right way.

  13. QUOTE (BigBob @ Jul 7 2012, 04:20 PM)
I like it. It fits perfectly on the album. Kind of like "Stop" from The Wall

GREAT analogy! I agree completely. At first, I didn't think it worked but as an intro to the end of the album, it works perfectly.
