  10. Hollywood director Jeff Pollack, 54, found dead after collapsing on run along California beach Jeff Pollack, who directed Booty Call and was a producer on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, was found dead along a running trail in California on Monday. He was 54. The Hermosa Beach Easy Reader reported that Pollack was already deceased when a woman reported finding his body around 6.30am on an area known as the Greenbelt along Hermosa Beach, about 20 miles southwest of Los Angeles. Authorities said on Thursday they do not suspect foul play. Pollack, full name Jeffrey Ian Pollack, was wearing jogging clothes and carrying an iPod Nano that was still playing The Eagles when the passer-by discovered him and called police... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2529729/Hollywood-director-producer-Jeff-Pollack-dead-California-beach.html
  11. It was a cold misty morning at Tiger Canyons in South Africa, when the game drive came upon the two tiger males, Sunderban and Shy Boy posturing for a fight. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E25C00000578-638_964x613.jpg Sunderban was in Shy Boy's territory and was the bigger and more aggressive of the two. Five years old Sunderban weighed easily 200 kilograms while Shy Boy 8 years old weighs less, maybe 185 kilograms. This fight had been building up for months and I was interested to see whether Sunderban would take his coalition partner, Mahindra, into the fight. If he won the fight, Sunderban would get access to a larger territory and 4 additional females. The stakes were high, to say the least. Shy Boy did his best to bluff his way out of the fight but Sunderban was pressing for the kill. After a number of boxing sessions, Shy Boy tried to take refuge in the river. Launching off the bank, Sunderban had the advantage of height and knocked Shy Boy down and got him in the death grip, by the throat. I have filmed many fights, kills and brutal scenes during my time but this was by far the most raw, the most ferocious. What made it so emotional for me, is that I had been with both these tigers as they grew up from cubs. Sunderban was abandoned at birth, so I hand raised him. The hours spent in the canyon swimming with him and his sisters Zaria and Shine, are some of the happiest days of my life. Shy Boy as a cub would crawl across and smack the camera off the bean bag when I came too close to his kill. In short these two tigers are great friends of mine and I value that friendship greatly. I was desperately hoping for a friendly outcome but it was not to be. I could relate to Shy Boy situation as he lay in the great jaws of Sunderban, the life draining from his body. All I could do was stay neutral, stay calm and record the unbelievable scene unfolding in front of my eyes. Four minutes, five minutes went by. Shy Boy has had it! He's out of strength and he's out of air. Suddenly Sunderban thinking Shy Boy was dead, relaxes his grip momentarily. Shy Boy kicks ferociously catching Sunderban throwing him backwards. Like a flash, Shy Boy is back on his feet, boxing, ripping, fighting for his life. The primeval scene is one of the rawest and most brutal I have ever witnessed. Both tigers are a brown colour from the mud, the eyes and white teeth stand out against the dark background. The red blood flows from both tigers and steam rises in clouds from their bodies and snarling mouths. Eight professional cameras photograph from three viewing vehicles and I have no doubt that the images will travel instantly across the world. Hardened photographers elated by the images they have captured are also shocked at the brutality and ferocity of the fight. Personally I am emotionally drained by the ordeal, stunned at the raw power of the tigers, saddened that two of my tiger friends are in such a brutal fight. Like a triumphant boxer who jumps onto the ropes after victory, Sunderban goes onto the highest rock to proclaim his victory. Shy Boy is lying in some rocks, inaccessible to me and a vehicle. Is he hurt? What terrible wounds have been inflicted? Will Sunderban attack him again? What could I have done to prevent this terrible tragedy? These are the thoughts racing through my mind. One thing is certain, the expansion of the tiger range at Tiger Canyons which started on the 1st July 2013, cannot came soon enough. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990B8DF00000578-385_964x642.jpg This is the incredible moment a pair of bloodied tigers slashed each other with their claws in a dramatic fight over territory. The dramatic battle was caught on camera at the world famous 'Tiger Canyons' in the Londolozi private game reserve in Pretoria, South Africa. The clash erupted after one of the tigers delivered a vicious blow to the neck of its rival. Believing it to be dead, the tiger released its opponent from its jaws but instead of the fight coming to a grizzly end, the two broke out in a second, even more savage struggle. German photographer, Marion Vollborn, captured the predatory pair while on safari tour. Ms Vollborn said 'The day before I took these pictures, our group spotted two male tigers pacing along each of their own territory borders. 'There had been a female tiger who had mated with both males and there was a very tense atmosphere but nothing had yet happened. 'In the morning we all suddenly heard a loud roar and we drove immediately towards the noise. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E3CC00000578-478_964x641.jpg 'The male tigers we had been observing the day before were in the water hidden by reeds, one had bitten the other on the throat and they both remained still for several minutes. 'It was horrific to see, the tigers were covered in mud, blood and water we could see them both breathing heavily because of the cold air. 'One of the tigers assumed his rival to be dead and it stopped biting but the bitten tiger saw his chance to escape and save his own life. 'All of a sudden a spectacular fight for life and death began, again and again the males clawed at each other. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E32600000578-370_964x641.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E41E00000578-895_964x641.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E40A00000578-667_964x642.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990B62F00000578-407_964x869.jpg 'The roaring was unbelievably loud, everyone who was there watching was clearly scared and I will never forget those sounds. 'The two opponents went from the reeds to the shrubbery and finally to an open area, both were bleeding heavily and we all feared the worst. 'After 45 minutes of fighting a winner emerged, it was the significantly stronger and younger male. 'Luckily, both survived the battle and their wounds are now healed. 'For a photographer it's spectacular to see something like this, but as an animal lover it makes it very hard to watch.' http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E38400000578-473_470x621.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990B3EC00000578-344_470x621.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/03/article-2517494-1990E2D500000578-608_964x641.jpg
  12. http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii282/Lerxster/28b24d13-98eb-4cf1-82bf-5acff22f5590_zps40e1bbb8.jpg The Beatles have finally released the track list to their new BBC collection, called, On Air - Live at the BBC Volume 2. The set will be released on November 11th -- just short of 19 years after the first volume, Live At The BBC, which will also be reissued in remastered sound the same day. On Air is being released as double-CD and 180-gram vinyl packages with a 48-page booklet. On Air's 63 tracks, none of which overlaps with 1994's Live At The BBC, includes "37 previously unreleased performances and 23 previously unreleased recordings of in-studio banter and conversation between the band's members and their BBC radio hosts." The BBC recordings have long been a treasure trove for bootleggers due to various radio specials over the years, which have rebroadcast both BBC reference discs and home recorded air checks -- with varying sound quality. Between March 1962 and June 1965, the "Fab Four" performed an astounding 275 different musical performances broadcast by the BBC across the U.K. The group played songs on 39 radio shows in 1963 alone -- which was the band's most busy year laying down tracks for the BBC. The Beatles played 88 distinct songs in their BBC sessions - some were recorded many times; others performed just once. Paul McCartney commented on the band's performances: "There's a lot of energy and spirit. We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes. . . We'd been raised on the BBC radio programs. One of the big things in our week was Saturday Club -- this great show was playing the kind of music we loved, so that was something we really aspired to." During his final in-depth TV interview in 1975 on NBC's Tomorrow Show, John Lennon explained that a major part of his and the Beatles' allure was the fact that they were never ashamed of their Liverpool roots: "We were the first working class singers that stayed working class, and pronounced it. 'Didn't try to change our accents, which in England were looked down upon -- probably still are -- like a Bronx accent, it's the equivalent to that." Although original drummer Pete Best was on hand for the Beatles' initial BBC radio appearances -- like the 1994 BBC collection -- none of his performances have made the cut on the new set. The missing songs -- which have never been available in great quality are: Roy Orbison's "Dream Baby (How Long Must I Dream)," the Coasters' arrangement of "Besame Mucho," and Joe Brown's "A Picture of You,." Best, who says that he has had no substantial contact with any of the Beatles since the night before he was fired, feels that Ringo Starr walked into a much cushier job than he did upon joining the Beatles: "Y'know, when you think about it, the first trip out to Hamburg, (Germany), we were playing six, seven hours a night. And I think actually, when (laughs) Ringo joined they were playing 20 minutes, half-an-hour sessions, or something like that. So, I did a lot of the spade work, put the long hours in and he was the one who picked up the glory." 15. I'm looking at the numbers for Paul McCartney's New and Pearl Jam's Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt sold 166,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at #1. 2009's Backspacer debuted at #1 with 189,000 copies sold. New sold 67,000 copies in its first week to debut at #3. 2007's Memory Almost Full, also peaked at Number Three, and sold 161,000. Now, of course, since Rush fans rock. Clockwork Angels debuted at #2 with 103,000 sold. Snakes & Arrows debuted at #3 while selling just under 93,000 copies. Vapor Trails entered at No. 6 with 110,000. But the PJ and Macca numbers are telling. Notice how Paul can sell such a smaller amount of albums and still come in at #3? Illegal downloading is sucking the life out of the record business. Yes, I realize this is not breaking news. Vapor Trails Remixed debuted at #35, but I don't know the numbers. At #35, I'd think it's below 30K. Not exactly cashing it in, but instead done for arts sake (or to get the bee out of Geddy's bonnet). Discuss.
  16. It's that time... I'm gonna write notes in a kind brick wall of text since it's VT ;) General extraneous distortion = eliminated vocals = clear, but not too loud like I expected. I can hear some parts of lines I never heard before subtle/cleaner guitar parts = unveiled, and powerfully rendered rhythm guitar = calmed down but not muted except in certain places, it's still a ballsy, angrily powerful riff machine extra guitar solos = good, I've no problem with this aspect bass = sharper, crisper, more available to your ear drums = they sound like drums now and not tupperware, I can hear fills that I didn't notice on the 2002 edition Geddy gang vocals = they've finally been translated harmonically speaking One Little Victory = this one sounds nice and clear but not that different to the original overall, I was kind of like eh?? for a sec Power guitar riff in the middle of Ceiling Unlimited = almost gone, that's a downer, it's more balanced overall though, nice guitar solo Ghost Rider = sounds f***ing excellent, this was always one of the meh tracks on the album for me, it's definitely good now Peaceable Kingdom = Not sure about this track but then I never was, it's got an unusual main riff, the power riff in the middle of this one though is intact, hurrah! The Geddy gang vocals make more harmonic sense here I think. The Stars Look Down = seems heavier, so much for fear of the lack of VT balls. I like this song better too, the cleaner guitars really benefit from this remix, these songs from Ghost Rider through to How it is were my least faves on here but I like them way better now How It Is = this seems heavier too! Cleaned up doesn't automatically mean no balls-muted! The main riff here is definitely more powerful. The bass part really works better to my ears now as well. Vapor Trail = seems like there's more time on this track. Less brick wall = the illusion of more time. Again the bass is revealed telling it's story, that got lost in aural translation last time. The vocals in the verse again make more sense, they're more evident, guitar solo = good, and there seems a lot of "new" guitar parts on this one Secret Touch = here's one where the bass already worked brilliantly, it sounds just like it did. The guitars don't overpower the vocals now, but still have that rasping roar especially when the vocals aren't present but are not lost when they are. There's some cool clean ringy guitar on here that I never heard before, is there weird effect here too around 2.20? Almost like a synth or guitar synth? Earthshine = the oooooohs in the chorus aren't as prominent, hmmmm I like the ooooooos. This song sounded good on the original edition, here it's just clearer, though ironically the "old" ringy clean guitars don't quite reach me the same, but the new "new" clean ringy guitars do, is that a new guitar solo too? Sounds good. The riff right after the guitar solo sounds good and chunky and gravelly. Sweet Miracle = This sounds ballsier in the riff department at the beginning and after each verse, but those guitars don't fight the vocals like before. The "middle eight" with Geddy scatting like an opera singer gone to the jazz side is much clearer and melodic. Nocturne = it's gonna sound boring but this tune is clearer and sharper especially in the vocals and bass, this one always seemed to have the most extraneous noise on it, but I always liked it anyway. The guitars are still dirty but the land rover isn't going right through the puddles and splashing distortion all over the windows this time. We can "see" where we're going. Freeze = Listening to this reminds me again that removal of noise can actually make a song more powerful not less, that's the case here. Drums and bass work much better here than the original. Again the Geddy gang vocals make more sense. in fact the all the vocals make more sense on this now. The other edition could be called VT Lost in Translation Out of the Cradle = on this we get the cleaner guitars and the new wavey guitars working in a much clearer way with the bass, I hear cool guitar amp feedback around 1.40, that I never heard before, fits in nicely. Was it there before? The new wavey guitars at the 3 minute mark are funky chicken neck dance worthy! Overall verdict = I always liked this album, now I like it better. It's not a no-balls muted too-loud vocals disappointment like I feared it could be. To be succinct for a second, it's f***ing good! It still has it's power, it still has it's balls, the guitars are still fierce, they don't get drowned or lost, they're in your face, they're just not strangling you. Dream Theater = I'm not doing one of these for that album  I'm listening to it now though! :yay: :guitar: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: :hi: edit: I missed out the word "meh" on the Ghost Rider bit.
  17. The hornets of your nightmares: Swarms of massive insects kill more than 40 and injure 1,600 in China At least 37 patients are in a critical or serious condition in hospitals Many survivors are now nursing bullet-sized wounds 'The more you run, the more they chase you' victims say Species are four times the size of British honeybees Swarms of deadly hornets have killed more than 40 people and injured more than 1,600 in northern China. At least 37 patients are in a critical or serious condition in hospitals, according to Shaanxi provincial government. Victims of the attack have been left with deep, dark craters in their skin the size of bullet wounds. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/03/article-2442384-187F47DC00000578-849_634x410.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/03/article-2442384-187E821700000578-828_634x427.jpg http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/03/article-2442384-187E821C00000578-168_634x470.jpg Over the past three months the cities of Angkang, Hanzhong and Shangluo have been worst affected. The Chinese term for hornets is 'hu feng' and local experts believe the culprit is the Asian giant hornet or Vespa mandarinia, which grows up to 5cm long with a 6mm sting. The insects' highly toxic stings can lead to anaphylactic shock and renal failure. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/03/article-2442384-186E955200000578-9_634x335.jpg One victim told local media that 'the more you run, the more they want to chase you' and some victims described being chased about 200 metres (656 feet) by the deadly insects. Authorities have mobilised a special medic team and trained more medical personnel to treat victims. An Ankang official told Xinhua that firefighters have been removing hornet nests. The provincial government said hornets are most aggressive in behaviour when they mate and migrate in September and October. The dry and warm weather this year has contributed to the ferocity of attacks. HUN FENG: DEADLY ASIAN HORNETS http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/10/03/article-2442384-187E822000000578-477_296x223.jpg The Chinese term for hornets is 'hu feng'. Those behind the deadly attacks this summer appear to be the Asian giant hornet, or Vespa mandarinia. The Asian giant hornet grows up to 5cm long with a 6mm sting which injects a large amount of potent venom. The hornet sting can be extremely painful to humans and has been compared to a hot nail being hammered into the body, The head of the hornet is orange and quite wide in comparison to other hornet species. The Asian giant hornet is intensely predatory; it hunts medium- to large-sized insects, such as bees, other hornet species, and mantises. Hornets are most aggressive in behavior when they mate and migrate in September and October. Attacks are difficult to prevent because hornet nests are usually in hidden sites. One of the victims, named only as Mu, said she has spent two months in a hospital undergoing 13 dialysis treatments. She has 200 stitches, but still can not move her legs. She told Xinhua, the Chinese state-run news agency: 'The hornets were horrifying'. 'They hit right at my head and covered my legs. All of a sudden I was stung and I couldn't move. 'Even now, my legs are covered with sting holes.' 'Most of the deaths are due to allergies to the venom, said Shunichi Makino, director general of the Hokkaido Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute, told CNN. 'It's very difficult to prevent the attacks because hornet nests are usually in hidden sites,' he said. 'The venom of an Asian giant hornet is very special compared with other hornets or yellow jackets,' he warned. 'The neurotoxin -- especially to mammals including humans -- it's a special brand of venom.' Meanwhile fears are growing that giant Asian hornets are headed for Britain. The species is four times the size of our native honeybees and has decimated the bee population in France. The dark invaders with yellow feet are thought to have arrive in France in a delivery of Chinese pottery from the Far East in late 2004. The insects have colonised huge swathes of France, spreading along waterways, and with a few hornets capable of destroying 30,000 bees in a couple of hours, honey production has plummeted. It has colonised 39 of France’s 100 administrative departments. The hornets pick on honeybees as they leave their hive until the colony is so exhausted that the hornets can move in and ransack it. Groups of Asian hornets hover in front of a beehive, picking off single honeybees, decapitating them and stripping off their wings and legs before making off with the 'meat ball' to feed their young. It is a further problem for the British honeybee, which is struggling to cope with changes in farming and climate and already has one Far Eastern invader to contend with - the varroa mite, which feeds on the bees and makes their hives more vulnerable to disease.
