  1. QUOTE (Gompers @ Apr 17 2012, 06:13 AM)
Rush returns with a new producer, after a long run with Broonsy, by hiring Peter Henderson to co-produce Grace Under Pressure. I was in college at the time of this release and it was an immediate hit with me. It seems like almost everyone has a different favorite off GUP. Few match my favorite, Red Lenses, though. I always liked the funkiness of the music and the goofiness of the lyrics. A close second is Red Sector A and then Between the Wheels. This was an awesome release and the best of the 80's synth era.

    The Great
    -Distant Early Warning
    -Afterimage
    -Red Sector A
-The Enemy Within (Part I of Fear)
    -Red Lenses
    -Between the Wheels

    The Good
    -The Body Electric
    -Kid Gloves

This gets a 9.5 because all songs are not great, but I will round it up to 10. It still gets regular rotation in my library.

facepalm.gif bitchslap.gif your license for making these lists shold be revoked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

kid gloves...is an amzing track- people would shit if they played it live again.

body electric would do the same.

Man this post is going to make me real popular!! Here goes:

    The Great:

    Limelight
    Tom Sawyer
    Red Barchetta

    The Good:

    The Camera Eye
    Vital Signs
    Witch Hunt

    The Ok:

    YYZ

You are probably thinking that I am on drugs. Let me explain.

Limelight & TS are just both top 10 songs for me. They are just wonderful. Red Bsrchetta I love also. Great song that I think is underrated (if that makes sense).

The 3 songs I ranked as good were songs that never really clicked with me until the TMT. Before seeing that tour I sat down and read the lyrics to all of MP. Esp. these 3. Did not so much as listen to the songs as read the lyrics and thought about them. Then went back and listened to the album. For some reason, at that point the songs shot WAY up. All 3 are in the good, bordering on great grouping. Interestingly, seeing Rush play them live, did not really do anything more to push them up (although I enjoyed them live a great deal). Really like them a lot.

Then their is YYZ. Sigh. This is the dud of the album. Or rather I should say that their is a 10 second stretch (roughly) in the song that ruins it for me. Sadly it is near the very beginning and that just damages the entire song. Badly. Its not the initial work by Neil. Thats ok. Its the echo back from the group which comes next and which sounds / feels like a machine gun to me. Just turns me off to the song. Big time. After that the song is good but nothing great (or close to great) to my ears. This is actually a song that has gone down in my rankings the more I have listed to it, which is very, very rare for a Rush song to do. Rush songs almost always grow on me. Once upon a time I would have ranked this song as "good" but now its only "ok" and, sadly, it continues to slide. Wish that was not the case but it is. Perhaps its just that I have listened to the song to many times. Maybe thats it, but truth is I never really cared for that part of the song. Sigh.

Overall, despite the one dud (to my ears anyway!!) I really like this album. Its just tremendous. Its a solid 9+ but the damage YYZ does to it prevents it from going over 9.5 and hence becoming a 10. Gave it a very sold 9.

The request was made for anybody voting less than 10 to explain themselves. You may not like it (or agree!!) but I tried to comply.

confused13.gif dazed025.gif apparently YYZ is too complicated and sophisticated for some peoples small brains...

Even if he did, don't expect it on the road. He's already said it's to heavy and he can get the same tone out of the lighter Fender.

Why people are so obsessed with him using that bass is beyond me. Did no one hear his tone on the last tour?

for those of us who dig (and can tell the diff) the rick tone, we'd like to hear him use it...it's a nostalgic thing. i LOVE exit stage left ane that's pretty much all 4001....

it's the same with lerxt and marshalls for me. i prefer his tone with marshalls, but i do dig the HK sound he gets. trink39.gif

but Headlong Flight makes 2112 sound downright wimpy. I am stunned the boys could pull this off at this stage in the game 1022.gif  2.gif

healdong flight is great tune, no doubt. but it's not full of angst and determination that launched a band into immortatilty, now is it?

NO music can make 2112 sound wimpy- besides, wimpy is Popey's moochy friend.

ironic that an archaic medium like vinyl still sounds better than any electronic one...1,000 times better.

    dazed025.gif

First, that's not irony. Second, that's only according to you and a small number of misguided people wink.gif tongue.gif

It's the definition of irony...plus vinyl sounds better only to those with ears. Are you 12 or something? Have you ever heard vinyl? Or are you just being a DB troll?

The wait is part of the fun, savour the moment I say, it'll be old news before you know it...

The new Astra album came out already a week or two ago, and people have virtually stopped talking about it. Personally, when things are truly fantastic (like the new Astra album), I think they should still be talked about for months, but for some reason others think all conversation after a week should grind to a halt. unsure.gif

Well since rush is light years ahead of Astra that's a stupid comparison...people actually give a shit about CA now and will after it's release.

Prove Far Cry wasn't a fluke! They still have what it takes to Rock hard and create meaningful prog-metal music! One of my favorite Rush songs live on TTMT!

    2.gif 1022.gif 2.gif

please stop using the "prog-metal" 062802puke_prv.gif lable with this band- not just you, but everyone in the world...PA LEEEZE!!! no more "prog this" or "prog that"

the word prog is latin for gay.

it's f-ing rock and roll people! period.

Do you have an iPad? jammit is what you need. you can slow down the isolated guitar without changing pitch. this is a VERY cool application. if not- just youtube search for the song you want to work on with "isolated gutar" in the search titile...

    you'll find stuff like this:

    which is BADa$$

Radiohead is a great band....no reason you can't like what they do and what Rush does....

Everything does not have to be lengthy arrangements of prog rock and singing about elves and trolls for Petes sake.....

Frankly bands like Yes and Genesis in the later parts of their careers blow...nothing but efficient pop music pretending to be prog...

Radiohead does some pretty cool stuff creatively....

Perhaps you were thinking of Coldplay...?

I just bought tix for radiohead in June here in the r n r capital....so I really need no lecture on them or any other music from you broseph. They are a good band, rush is an elite band- that's all I was saying. No need to break out the progressive-rock-is-only-good-in-the-70's argument. You were probably not doing much besides sucking a bottle then anyways. A milk bottle that is, son.
