Not sure it makes sense to remaster it. It's not one of their best sellers, and it costs a lot to remaster and market something. I don't think it will happen.

Besides, we are lucky we got the album in 2002!

Their marketing costs would be virtually nil, actually. These days, given who their target audience is and the nature of the product, it would sell itself. Rush has a built-in audience and they know we'll buy official releases. And it wouldn't be all that expensive to remaster, either. Few thousand dollars maybe.

    Hi Daniel,

I could be wrong. You bring up some good points. If most are buying electronically, the packaging costs wouldn't be as high either.

  3. Poor guy. Gallant effort, though.

Interesting aside: Steven Tyler said absolutely nothing, and I'm not sure it was just due to the lackluster performance. Didn't Aerosmith basically shit on Rush when they were starting out? He seems like a jerk.

Must be jealous that Rush has musicians that can actually play!

I had the pleasure of having lunch with Andrew in LA in 2001. One thing I will never forget, is how he told me that Neil used to cry himself to sleep on Andrew's shoulder soon after Jackie died.

    Rest in peace Andrew.

    This is tragic news.

...is your anecdote really appropriate, sir?

To me. these are the worst songs vocally that are just plain embarrassing .
Time Stand Still, awful version. well, geddys vocals..
Tom Sawyer and Limelight.. everything thing else is fine..

    What was wrong with TSS?

  6. It seems a fall tour is more likely. From a marketing/financial perspective, touring so soon is much more risky since they were on the road less than a year ago. Plus, bands that attract a similar demographic will be touring starting this spring.

Although the band does like the outdoor shows for comfort reasons, from a business perspective it makes much more sense to delay it.

Either way, I'll be hittin' the road--wherever and whenever!

  7. A couple of things first.

Don't get me wrong, I like AC/DC. They are tight, fun and loud.

It's not "Geddy's voice" that prevents the stratospheric sales. It might be a small fraction, but that's it. Like previous posters commented, look at only fair singers (in the classic sense, that is) like Axl Rose, Robert Plant (the best of this bunch, I think) or even Bruce Springsteen. Did anyone see Steven Tyler sing the national anthem on Sunday? This is what I mean. He's not a great singer but they sell a lot of records; just about all the aforementioned bands (inluding our beloved Rush) are greater than the sum of their parts.

In my opinion, it's much more the the complex arrangements, amazing (difficult and intricate) musicianship and heady (not appealing to the lowest common denominator) lyrics.

Here's an analogy: Toyota and Ford sell a lot more cars than Porsche. Toyota and Ford have mass appeal, as they are approachable, accessible and affordable. Porsches are not.

Rush are the Porsche of rock.

    Neil reflected on his year.
He had good times, he had bad times.
    He was pretty busy.
    Suprise!!!
Not much different from the rest of us, he just has a much better job.
Good to know he is okay.
    Hope to see him soon.

  9. QUOTE (New World Kid @ Jan 16 2012, 12:48 PM)
I don't think it's Rush's style at all to look back into the past and rerecord them.

If they did it, I'd want it to be older, and more obscure songs, that maybe with modern sounds, would be a lot better. A lot of their 80's work would be better if they would have been able to do more soundscaping and texturing with the keys, for example.

But I think this is best left to a cover band, not Rush themselves. To borrow a sentiment: Rush doesn't need to look back, but rather just around themselves now.

    You got it!

I'm happy they are continuing to evolve and still at it.

  10. Oh man, I think it's time for all of us to have some beers!

    Enough already.

For those who are offended, there is an easily solution: stop supporting the band.

Yes, the last poster is correct. Of course The Watchmaker is God; is it God that is being mocked, or the futility of life, or the pointlessness of belief in a higher power? My opinion is that is in fact God being mocked. Ergo, we do good, we make good choices, and then our Loving God watches us all die.

Moreover, it is brilliantly tied in with the Time Machine theme and the intricacies high-end watchmaking.

  11. QUOTE (Knice @ Jan 12 2012, 12:52 PM)
Its amazing to me. For a guy who really did have some hard blows, and yet found and created/blessed with a new family, baby, great career; he is still angry. News flash Neil; everyone has tough times. I know your inner-baby soul you mentioned on the last DVD was hurt; and I respect that, but bad stuff happens to good people all the time.
Its interesting that he states he is "quietly resisting" when really it appears almost an agenda in the last few years and now albums.

Im disappointed because I grew up listening to these guys, and the lyrics were always as important as the music; so I get some people saying, "well, then don't listen; or turn it off" but I am so excited to hear this next album; and I honestly feel its just going to bash and belittle my feelings on God and spirituality. Not whining here, just kind of takes a little something out of the experience of a new Rush album.

I have always felt for 30 years now, how incredibly intelligent/articulate Neil is; and yet it completely blows my mind how uneducated he is on Christianity. He must be talking about the cook -a-dook fanatics, but in my Christian church that I try to attend weekly, its all about giving to those who don't, trying to think outside of ourselves, bringing my kids on Thanksgiving day to homeless shelters, forgiving those who screw us over and all around just trying to help me be a good man/husband/dad. How he compares that to the MIDDLE EAST and terrorism on S&A, just baffled me. "middle east and the middle west" Yes, there are crazys but for the most part, I think people who are Christian are really just trying to make the world a better place. It seems as if he was brought to a room and somebody tried to literally shove a bible down his throat and beat him or something.
Neil, please, we get it. We respect your beliefs and your freedom to express; but please stop making many of us feel "a little crazy" for believing in something that you are kind of belittling.
I will be bummed if the next album is another extension of his unresolved issues with Christians.
    RUSH RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't seem angry at all. However he does articulate some disapproval or lack of understanding towards Christians.

Please re-read how he praises the brilliant Christopher Hitchens, and the quote from him he admires.

All this Neil bashing is curious to say the least.

  12. Right on, NWK!

I suggested earlier that it's not about "playing everything I can" all the time. With maturity and development come restraint and improved construction.

Remember his 1996 video, A Work In Progress?

It foreshadowed much to come. M.U.S.I.C.= Make Up Something Interesting (and!) Complementary.

Neil is superb. (Other players who personified this were Liberty DeVitto and Steve Gadd.)

  13. QUOTE (pratt53 @ Jan 4 2012, 11:13 AM)
I don't think they do a fall tour simply because I don't think they can fill the arenas in every city. It's one thing to fill 8-10,000 seats in the sheds, but having to fill 15-18,000 seats a night in arenas would be hard for them.

They can do a few arena shows in certain places, but not an entire tour.

I'm psyched for the tour either way. If they market it as something-2112, my bet is it will be huge. Time Machine was one of their biggest ever, perhaps since MP.

Another scenario: play fewer dates to fuller places.

Their are pros and cons to each type of venue, but if pressed I'd choose indoor. Vivid, loud, exciting and classic!

  14. Here is what makes Neil without peer: He continue to evolve, learn and develop. For a rock drummer, let alone an (by his own admission) over-playing, sometimes-bombastic icon, this is simply unheard of.

It's kind of like a chef who grills a perfect steak or makes a beautiful salad. Sure, anyone can throw tons of "steak seasoning", salt, pepper and A-1 on a slab of meat; anyone can get a bag of lettuce and throw the refrigerator in with it. The ones that shine are the ones that use balance and nuance.

Add to this that he is pushing 60 and continues to be both powerful and sensitive, soloing and supporting, and you have the best rock drummer who ever lived.
