  1. Pretty cool looking guitar, although nothing AL has used. Why didn't they do a HRF 1980 replica I wonder? (It's on the Gibson site and one on eBay...I can't copy paste a link a the moment..stupid iPad)

+1 on the 1980 HRF, it is such a great guitar! They seem to have gone up a lot on the used market compared with when you and I picked one up, but mine will only go on the market by my heirs. Hopefully they wont sell it for what I paid for it (or even worse, what I told my wife I paid for it)!

  2. That 335 looks a lot like his original '67, that would be amazing, it dont think it has been on the road in a long time. Nice to see the double necks make an appearance again, that looks like a new Ric for Ged. I havent seen any pics with the Hentor though. Freddy you out there?
  3. Pre-ordered mine.

I own The Gibosn Custom Shop Artist Series Lifeson 355 (in my avatar pic and the best guitar I have ever owned and played) as well as the Lifeson Custom Shop Les Paul (amazing guitar as well). I have a white 1235 on order as well. I love playing my Gibsons. The PRS Acoustic will be cool. I own an amzing Ibanez (since 1991) that has been my go to acoustic for 25 plus years now and like the new PRS Lifeson it is a smaller more compact acoustic with a thick rich sound. But I love the look and sound of this SE thin line guitar and the price is too good not to grab one.

I also play PRS's electrics with a Black Cherry body Rosewood fretboard CE 24 like Alex plays (but his is black). And I have a couple of the rare PRS EG-4's (built in 91-92 as well) bolt on's which are really cool and sound great.

Actually hitting Vegas with my bandmates (over 20 years writing and playing together) for R40 and we still get together and jam every couple of months after all these years.

Very cool indeed. I own the 355 and the LP as well. Better save your pennies for what's coming shortly........

Save for what? Do tell Kevin.....

  4. Taylors are not Martins. Martins are robust and Taylors are thin and scratchy/shrill comparatively. Sure they look nice but tonally they lack. Martin invented the dreadnaught and bracing patterns used by all acoustic guitar mabufacturers. I would get a Gibson/Epiphone or Guild before a Taylor, but I have two Martins myself plus I grew up with my dad's D-18 from the 50s which is my personal definition of what an acoustic guitar sounds like.

If there is insurance then the onus is on the shipping company. File a claim and have the shipping company/insurance pay for a new Martin.

    IMHO, this ^
  5. 1979 HRF serial #1 was listed for sale by www.emeraldcityguitars.com in 2009/2010.

Starting price was 7650, lowered to about 6000 later (I think). Call them for more info.

To answer your PM, no...I just bought a first year run 1980 HRF. Still plays like butta.

    GL

Yeah, when an early 80's one of these comes up, grab it! I don't play mine nearly enough, but it is a great guitar that can still be had fairly inexpensively. There is something about the neck, it plays so easy.

  6. Hey Hentor Fans....

I'm pleased to announce that you can all hear the Hentor once again! Alex Lifeson was invited to play on a song from Jon Wesley's forthcoming album "Disconnect".

I had to hold my tongue since I knew about this back in September when Alex e-mailed me telling me that he was recording at Wesley's studio and using his newly refurbished Hentor exclusivley.

Well, now it's been announced and I can talk about it! Al was thrilled with the Hentor telling me "It never sounded this good, buddy! Wonderful results today with the session."

I can't wait to hear this...apparently Alex laid down a fabulous solo.

Hey Freddy, that is great news on so many fronts! Cant wait to hear it! Hentor replica #12 is still doing great here....

  7. I'm interested in how well the lace sensors replicate the Signature sound. I bought an Evans single coil passive pickup a while back thinking maybe I'd try it out for that tone, but haven't got around to installing it. The pickups in the Signatures are still a bit of a mystery to me. Keep us posted.
  8. Lerxst contacted me a few days ago to let me know that he's been recording (as a guest on somebody's album...can't tell you who it is because it hasn't been made public yet) and he has been using the Hentor! He was gushing praise about it, how it's never played or sounded better. I was walking on sunshine that day!

Wow Freddy, how did I miss this! Congrats on the compliment from Lerxst. The replicas kick some serious ass, too, did Alex ever get to play one?

This is great news for all of us if we get to hear the Hentor in action again.

  9. I cant vouch for the accuracy of the transcription/tablature, but Jammit just released La Villa Strangiato today. Even if the transcription is wrong having at least a somewhat isolated track is very helpful when figuring out a solo. I may play with tone matching it on the Axe FX.

  10. Hey guys, check this out... I gotta say my real amps and vintage effects havent been getting much use anymore in the last 6 months or so, it's just so much easier and so versatile... There is a pretty active Alex fan club over at forum.fractalaudio.com, a couple of patches guys have come up with just nail Rush studio tones.

  11. Hi all,

The Hentor replicas are now being completed and shipped out to their new owners. Thanks for watching this thread!

    Cheers,

    Freddy

Well what kind of Dimarzio pickups did you use? Distortion?

The bridge pickup is a Bill Lawrence, the singles are dimarzios.

Got an email from Freddy today that my Hentor will be shipping next Tuesday, now comes the hardest part of the wait!

  12. Christmas is coming and I have to write my letter to Santa soon. Can I include a Hentor Sportscaster on my list to the big guy or what?

I got an email from Freddy a couple of days ago with all the details on the hentors, so it sounds like he is ready to take orders. If you are interested you should contact him, or drop me a note and I will forward on his email.

  13. I know some of you went to opening night, so give it up...

What was Alex playing last night and how was his tone? Any visible changes in the rig? Was Scott still his tech? So many questions, dont tell me I have to wait til tomorrow to find out?

    Oh boy!

My apologies to everyone who has been following this. It must have appeared that I've been missing in action because I have stopped posting. The reality is that for some reason this forum has not been notifying me of new posts like any other forum does so I thought there were no new posts until I decided to check the thread today.

    Here's the latest.
After speaking to Alex I'm going to upgrade some parts on the Hentor. We discussed a ghost loaded floyd but in the end it was decided that he didn't really need it. But I am going to install a titanium sustain block on the trem. We also discussed the single coil pickups, these are going to be replaced with Dimarzio FS-1, with the middle pup reverse polarity for true humbucking when in the middle and neck position.
The single coil swap decision was made because although the stock pups sound just OK, the body and neck materials being so tight and dense make them sound particularly thin and small.
The electronics (pots, switch ) will be replaced just due to age and wear and tear.
One other notable modification that seems minor but will have a real impact on the tonality of the guitar will be the pickguard. At some point the original pickguard that had the humbucker/single coil/single coil was replaced with a pre-fabbed one. But, what happened was that the prefabbed one's humbucker cut out was closer to the bridge that the way Alex had it originally. This is why extra body wood was routed out of the HB cavity area, and why the bridge posts eventually broke out.
Also, this is why the guitar is thinner and more shrill sounding in the humbucker position than it used to be. It's just too close to the bridge (not by a whole lot either...but a little goes a long way).

So for those that are interested, I will be offering replicas of the 80s era with no fine tuners (depending on avaialability of the bridges) or the current set-up with the locking floyd. The upgrades that I will install now (titanium, Dimarzio FS-1) will be an option.

Over the past few weeks I have been selecting wood from my private stockpile (most of which has been stickered and seasoning for 15+ years). Aside from the obvious (pickups etc.) the wood selection is critical in what makes this guitar sound the way it does.

Mods, or anyone else in the know....is there a setting I have missed so that I can be sure I'm notified whenever there is a repsonse on this thread?
    Thanks,
    Freddy

Hey Freddy, maybe I missed it, but what bridge pickup are you going to use in Alex's Hentor? I have not played with a titanium block for the floyd, there is a brass one in the AL Axcess, can you (or any other TRF'rs) comment on your experience with the titanium especially with tone and sustain?

I have not heard of wiring the middle and neck pups this way, that sounds pretty cool. Can you still get the strat quack with this configuration if you want to break into some Gilmour territory?

Anyone having any comments on the fine tuners or not, I would be interested. I have only played with newer floyds with the fine tuners, so I dont have a baseline for comparison. I think the fine tuners help a lot, but everything is usually a compromise, is there a downside?

Thanks again for including the forum in this, this is a totally cool project! When is Alex going to get the original back (in the next couple of weeks maybe???)?

  15. Yeah, I gotta admit I have not heard a lot of what I would call "classic" Leslie effect in Alex's playing, but he has been using Leslies and/or the Rotosphere or other sim on records and on tour since the 70's, so what is he using it on?
  16. OK, at the risk of hijacking the OP, this is The 2.gif Forum after all....

So Alex has been using a Leslie or a Leslie sim for a long time, lets hear from you TRF'rs, what is your favorite Rush use of the Leslie?

That's too bad. The hitch for me is that my performance machine is a MacBook Pro. It doesn't make sense to carry a second laptop just for one synth. Granted it sounds great but if I can't integrate into the Mac environment it's not much use to me. I could probably partition my drive to run Windows on the Mac, but that would mean a reboot. Not exactly handy mid-set. Reason does a more than satisfactory job replicating these tones. I know you're not the developer, but they should know that many audio pros prefer working in Mac OS over Windows. If I just needed the tones for recording then I may get a copy. I might get it just to sample for other use.

    Decisions...

You could try running Windows in a Virtual Machine on your Mac using VMWare Fusion 4, then you can run Windows without rebooting.

I just got a new Macbook Pro and need to install Fusion, I will give OB-X a try in this environment and see how it works, but its only like 50 bucks now for Fusion, so it is worth a try.
