  1. I'm a studio version guy, and the studio version of Tom Sawyer always take me back to that first time I listen to Moving Pictures. I remember thinking this is the best album ever released. This was the LP version btw.

That was the first Rush album i ever bought.

And this is the video that brought me here 7 years ago:

    http://youtu.be/auLBLk4ibAk

I had dial-up back then. 5 to 7 seconds of a video loaded every minute. It took a long time for it to load. I listened to it over and over and over because if I saved it, I lost the video and had to start all over again.

Maybe it's just me & maybe it's a time capsule thing, but I remember how those albums sounded like back then, the emotional impact they had on me, and I do find current versions of these album (cd & digital versions)...they don't seem to deliver that emotional impact, they seem somewhat stript for those emotions...

I think this is a BIG reason I'm more into the original CDs instead of the remasters, in most cases...

same with vintage vinyl. I want it to sound like what I'm used to!

  2. AND I'M STAN GETZ!!!!

Just came in here to say.. even though I've heard it a billion times, and never NOT seen them do it live at a gig....

.... I still get a bit of an adrenaline rush when I hear the studio version of Tom Sawyer.

  3. :musicnote:...Summer's going fast, nights growing colder

Children growing up, old friends growing older

Freeze this moment a little bit longer

Make each sensation a little bit stronger

    Experience slips away

    Experience slips away

The innocence slips away ... :musicnote:

Really REALLY timely right now in my own life. Holy....

Last time I heard them do it live was the Time machine tour... got me all choked up then,

and it still does these days, from time to time.

  4. Most treasured item?

Probably the 45s.... the most vintage I have is a white-label promo of Closer to the Heart/Madrigal.

In time it'd be great to get more of the singles (and they don't have to be promos!) but they are pricey....

The Japanese one or the one from the US? The Japanese 45 is really difficult to get.

US. I'd have stated if it was Japanese.. :) That would be even more special!

I've been semi-seriously looking for one of those Japanese 45's too.

As it's not one of my favorite studio songs I haven't been as obsessed with the idea as I would be if it were a favorite..

I hear ya --- I actually want to acquire a few other choice US singles first (especially 2112-Temples, and the live Fly by Night/In The Mood).

  6. Well.... I'm gonna BUMP this thread.... been a lot of changes since I started it....

Heliopolis is now AmuZeum. The "2nd album" I spoke of in the original post is now our FIRST album. (Although to me it feels

more like a continuation of what Heliopolis did).

AmuZeum is 4/5 the Heliopolis lineup with one important change --- Mark Wickliffe on bass. Mark and Mike are also in a progressive rock band called Ten Jinn, which has been around for over 20 years.

Anyway.... we are in the mixing stages of the album, hopefully to be released in another month or two.

    Excited!!!

  7. I was there too, although I wasn't participating much on the Forum at that time, and was traveling with a big group of my own...

    Amazing show, and very emotional.

    Can't believe it's been 4 years....

  8. I think Ged's voice was just fine at the last two shows I saw, but that was in context of the live experience. I haven't heard the S&A Live, Time Machine, Clockwork or R40 Live cds/vids, and don't care to.

    :Alex: :Neil: :geddy:

I saw the R40 show and loved it. I listened to the CD once. I doubt I ever will again.

I feel this way about the R40 tour, Time Machine Tour, and Clockwork Angels tours. LOVED the shows. Maybe listened to the live CDs/DVDs once.

  9. This is funny. The general attitude of the long-timers is yeah, nothing we haven’t heard before...while some will undoubtedly get into it and explain and explain and explain, all over and over again. But in the end, I don’t think anyone’s minds will be changed.

Let the circle jerk continue. The faster we go, the rounder we get...

And in the end, does it even matter?

Nothing left to do but smile, smile, smile...

(hey, if you think being a Rush fan is hard in this regard, try being a Yes-diehard.....)

Isn't the other Yes (ARW) supposed to be half-ways decent?

I just read ARW are touring again soon. And yes they are massively more listenable than this mess.

UGH I feel so bad typing that. Alan White is f***ing brilliant, and a GREAT musician. He's just in bad shape physically. He's a legend and he saved Yes after Bruford left.

Puts me in a super awkward position... 2 of the guys in the Howe-version of Yes are friends of mine.... they're not the issue...

That's cool and awkward at the same time.

Here's a rare pic of Steve Howe being happy:

I watched some of ARW at the Apollo and the difference is immediate: more energy, more interplay, non-droopy tempos (er, tempi?).

    Steve Howe's Spinal Tap moment:

    "Turn that spotlight off!"

    [Light gets turned off]

    "I can't see! Grrrr!"

I was at those shows, although I didn't get into the soundcheck (where this vid is from)... Hoo Boy!!

  11. :musicnote: ...turned on my VCR

same one I've had for years... :musicnote:

    :7up:

    James Brown and TAMI SHOW...

same tape I've had for years....

Funny the things we hear. For myself, even after I learned the correct lyrics, i'm still more comfortable singing whatever it was I thought they were selling when I first heard the song. Not every album came with lyrics back then, there was no internet to consult, and some of them sang so as to make the lyrics hard to decipher.

No kidding! Took me years to figure out what the hell he was talking about... :D
