  1. Yeah I was going to say nobody really mentioned the streaming and it is very convenient. You can do it on the Xbox, Wii, PS3 and new AppleTV! Some new Bluray players allow you to stream and some TV's even have a wifi connection to allow this also!

Only downside to Netflix is the catalog is too thin IMHO. I'd like to see more stuff in there.

  2. I really don't understand someone hating country music. I guess some people are have predetermined notions and are not capable of learning. Of course the same could be said for clams. I hate 'em, wife loves 'em.

To me country music is the only genre that consentrates on the art of story telling. It delves into the good things in life and what's important and it generally has a positive outlook on life, which is something a lot of people could use more of.

When I listen to RATM (which I love) scream about how they're being oppressed and then I compare it to some Kenny Chesney's "The Good Stuff" and you hear about what's really important in life.

There's enough BS in life to bring to bring you down all the time. I want something uplifting somtimes. And country music can fill the bill.

    Much like RUSH does yes.gif

  3. Been a while since I popped in here. Got my 14 yr old boy his first rifle for Christmas this year. My wife said it was a big waste of money but he loves it!

Got him a 10/22, lots of accessories available etc. He already spent his own money on a scope, sling and extra mags. Makes his daddy proud. Now he wants a bigger caliber too!

Been to the range 3 times already. brought his friend (parents are big libs) and they had a blast! Brought the AR-15 and PS-90 just to WOW 'em. I love converting people!

This past fall was my first RUSH show and went because I got my dad tickets for Father's Day. At the concert I immediately realized I could listen to this band for now on and hope to expand my collection of their CD's soon.

I'm a younger fan and also a new member here but I am kind of disappointed because I was looking forward to this CD coming out.

    Good on ya buddy! applaudit.gif

  5. Seriously Steve? rofl3.gif

You think after just 40 US tour dates they'd just bag the whole MP tour and start fresh? It's one of the best stage shows and productions they've done in years, or ever, and you're surprised they're gonna stick with it?

They did Snakes and Arrows for two years also...

  6. I'm psyched as is the whole family.

Granted it's not LOST or even near it but it has some interesting metaphors in the story line. I LOVE the whole immigration and health care thing that permeates the show and the cautionary tale that nothing is free.

I'm gonna agree with everyone here. The guy has serious chops. I put him up there with Gary Oldman.

The Score was the DeNiro film right? And Primal Fear was the Vatican thing I think...hmmm off to IMDB

Yep, "The Score" had DeNiro. Such a great movie, and unbelievably DeNiro is upstaged by Norton.

Here is the IMDB plot summary for "Primal Fear". If you haven't seen it this doesn't have any spoilers. I guarantee if you like a good suspenseful drama, you will LOVE "Primal Fear". Richard Gere plays opposite Norton.

    Primal Fear

Courtroom thriller about a slick, hotshot lawyer who takes the seemingly unwinnable case of a young altar boy accused of murdering an eminent catholic priest.

An arrogant, high-powered attorney takes on the case of a poor altar boy found running away from the scene of the grisly murder of the bishop who has taken him in. The case gets a lot more complex when the accused reveals that there may or may not have been a "third person" in the room during the murder. The intensity builds when a surprise twist alters everyone's perception of the crime and what really happened.

Yep, I've seen that, that's what I meant about the vatican; Foggy Memory cool10.gif

    That was a great flick!

I got Inception and The A Team on Blu Ray for Christmas, and I have to say, I actually enjoyed the A Team a lot more. While this was my second time seeing Inception, I found myself EXTREMELY disappointed on my second viewing. I caught nothing new, and I found no deeper meaning than what was obvious on the first viewing. Maybe I just don't get it, but Inception was really a let down after the hype leading up to it. A Team, on the other hand, was fun as hell.

LOl! Surprising to hear this from you in some ways. From most of your posts Ive read, I presumed a more intellectually challenging display to be up your alley. Although I haven't seen The A-Team, I've heard it is fun and I'm sure 90 minutes of explosions will get me off as well.

But I found Inception to be really enveloping and I just love a flick that begs you to listen and think a bit. I doubt Barachus and the boyZ will require too much of that.

Hey, I love Stone Crab and Cheese-doodles. But not together.

laugh.gif The A-Team was certainly no mind-bending brain burner, but the skill in that movie was their trueness to the original form. I really enjoyed seeing the distorted physics of the original (which were due to budget restrictions) re-created with modern big-budget technology- they didn't make the movie look perfect, and the imperfection is there in all the right ways. The feel, the attitude, the cheese, it's all there from the original, and all the parts were cast very well. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and recommend it to anyone else who grew up on Hannibal, Murdock, Baraccas, and Faceman.

Inception, while a clever film, just struck me as 'trying to hard'. I understand that the movie is built on several layers of intricacies that tie together very well; but it all seemed so forced. I felt a lack of subtlety and mystique... even though that's what I was told specifically to look forward to. I'm really not trying to knock Inception, because it IS clever, and I did enjoy watching it. I just didn't appreciate everything they tried to do, I felt like it was unnecessarily complicated, and lacked a natural 'flow'. It's like Dream Theater; I love Dream Theater for their technical ability and musicmanship: they're one of my favorite bands. But sometimes Dream Theater's technical touch turns into directionless wankery. That's what Inception felt like; it almost felt like a film maker showing off just to show off. Sometimes you just want something more seemless, more pure of heart... like Porcupine Tree.

Do you think maybe you feel this way because they took so much effort to explain everything as they went along? I kind of feel that in a way. I love it when things just unfold in your mind, the director gives you the events, but you figure out the story...what's really going on.

Like at the end of American Beauty (SPOILER!) when Spacey dies with a smile on his face. His wife didn't walk in and say "Oh at least you died happy when the guy next door shot you because you finally had a cathartic moment when you realized you love your life and now I'm going to go throw myself into your clothes because I can;t stand the thought of life without you and boy I really f*cked up."?

  9. I'm curious about the opening show in Ft Lauderdale.

They finished the US tour in West Palm Beach literally 45 minutes away (with traffic rofl3.gif ). So just about any RUSH fan in South Florida from Miami to Orlando went. I'm from Orlando and everyone around us was from Ft Lauderdale and Miami already! I think about 9,000 were there.

I don't see any way this one gets anywhere close to selling out! I wanted them to play Jacksonville so all the North Florida and So GA fans could see them. Stupid in my mind. confused13.gif

  11. Sweet, I'll check it out.

I do think that BD was a bit polished but EC puts out amazingly clean albums that are very dynamic and I LOVE HIS STUFF. He has a way of making a great sounding record. yes.gif From the Cradle being one of my favs.

Now I need to go stand on my Candlebox soapbox. tongue.gif

I have seen this move 3 times now......

This film without a doubt has clinched a spot in my top 10 of all time, If I think about it, perhaps my top 5....

The second of Nolan's flims in my top 10

  13. @ the oaks,

thanks for your reply. I think some of your message gets into what I'm trying to say in that he has other albums more rock oriented and Blues Deluxe was his "blues" album. Following the formula. Perhaps it's also because the guy who turmed me onto him praised him as the second coming of SRV and that got my hopes up so high.

I do see him as more of a rock guitarist however. I don't mean to detract from his obvious skills. You know as an older guy I have a vision or prejudiced for my blues "Gods" of SRV and EC. I saw his Royal Albert Hall show on Palladia and he looked like he was trying too hard with EC on stage, while EC was like "Go ahead Sonny, ham it up."

The sunglasses still irk me. cool.gif 653.gif

I'll scope out some more of the vids you've posted as well, I'm always on the look out for good tunes and you definately got some up there.

    Peace!

  14. OK, here's my opine on JB. Something about him makes me think 'canned, polished, country club poser."

I'm sorry, but although he's technically good (even great) he just doesn;t light my fire. I had a friend recommend him to me and I bought the Blues Deluxe album. There are some good songs on it, but to me he sat down and said, "Ok, I need one blues tune from each genre (Delta, Chicago, Texas, Swing, etc) and put them all on one record so I can prove I'm a blues man". To me it's uninspired. A collection of check list items.

His Aviator sunglasses and Perry Ellis shirts just rub me wrong. SRV. EC. Buddy Guy. Those guys are blues men.

Now BCC sounds like something more up his alley. The stuff I've heard sounds good. Look forward to it.

  16. I think the greatest line in Caddyshack is when Rodney Dangerfield's character is in the clubhouse buying stuff for his guest and picks up that hat and says "Boy, you buy a hat like that and you get a free bowl of soup", then looks at the steaming mad Judge Smells and says "Oh but it looks good on you" and rolls his eyes. classic!

  17. I'd like to address the subject of cabling that was touched on above. Cheapo cables can work fine out of the box, but they are more likely to fail for no apparent reason, especially HDMI cables.

Trust me, as someone who's installed 100's of mid to high end AV systems, I've seen it over and over again. I agree that if you;re hooking up a 26" LCD to Grandma's DVD player, it's probably not an issue. But I've had to use cheap cables in a pinch and I can tell that over the years I've had many of them fail, but none of our higher end more expensive cables have failed.

I also caution, DO NOT use any of these cheap cables for long runs (20 ft or more) as they are are famous for not passing full res 1080p or introducing specks in the picture.

  18. QUOTE (ForceTen @ Dec 23 2010, 06:10 PM)
This may be a different topic, but I have a 22" Viewsonic 1080p Full HD monitor. Some standard DVD movies I watch are grainy while others are not too bad. Is it because of the video card?

We still have an old 27" RCA tube TV that I'd like to replace at some point because we have to use a converter box (antenna TV). But, I've been holding back some because I would have to upgrade our DVD player/recorder, etc and can't justify it just yet.

This thread has some good info in it though, thanks. smile.gif

The difference in pic quality probably has more to do with the original mastering of the disc. Many older DVD's were poorly mastered and a lot of transfers were very bad.

If you put in one disc and it looks great, than the next one looks horrible, it is how the movie was transferred. Also, you'll notice that frequently the menus look great and the movie looks bad.

Plasma? Not very reliable, but if you manage to own one that doesn't get dangerously hot, or is not going to get screen burn-in, more power to you.

I'm getting a large (don't know exactly how large, or what brand, but it's big bastard; I've seen the box it came in) LED TV for Christmas smile.gif

I'd like to know where you get your information about the reliability of plasma. I've been selling and installing them for 10 years with my own company and find your comments a little specious.
