On the 'showing off' point there really is a range of reasonable opinions on this issue: one man's impressive gymnastics is another's self indulgence. I'm reminded, though, of something I heard Dave Holland say once, he was playing in Miles Davis's live set up in the early 70s, I think it was, and playing ever more and intricate notes. Miles simply said to him 'Remember you're a bass player'. Dave said it was powerful advice, that he refound the beauty of the bassist's role from it. Disco

Well, for me, what I love is the big soul-moving bass that goes BOOM - deep, subsonic and loud. But hey, we're talking about bass guitar here so... The only bass guitar tones I don't care for are the thin ones that merge themselves into the treble tones so I can't really hear what's going on (Grace Under Pressure) or the horrible 'clicky' bass that people like Steve Harris sometimes use - it's very percussive, but I can't actually really hear what notes are being played. So much of sonics comes down to what your after. For example, you can go for clear separation of sound, as in Hold Your Fire, where you hear what's going on but sacrifice some warmth, or go for a warmer sound but forego some clarity. You really pays your money and take your choice. Whatever sound you go for will have its own charateristic and emotional effect. It really is just a matter of finding the best sonic for what you want to say. Disco

Yes, Baraka's just like Koyannasquatsi (sp, me too) . Terminator 2 is horrible. It's a clone of the first one, following the firsts profile exactly (I haven't got the facts to my fingertips but really, compare it scene for scene.) It's a straight copy with more money as less feeling. Disco

Well, it's heavy heart time. Lord knows there's been a lot of emotion in this thread, highs lows and what-not. But beyond it all we've been, become, a band of borthers and brotherettes. One of greats has left. And he was, is, great. The flame of hope burns less brightly without his fire. I'm going to have a minute's silence, off the quest, to remember his highlights.
