  1. I'm sure he's immensely better than I am. It takes lots of practice to get a consistent tone and build your embouchure up. I played mostly alto in school but switched to tenor in high school after failing my alto audition for the advanced band class. They needed a tenor player for the advanced band so my teacher asked me to play tenor for them since he knew I was a good player, even though my audition was bad. Otherwise I would have been stuck in last chair alto, behind this guy I really couldn't stand whom I knew didn't really care that much about band anyway.

You said your dad has a Selmer, any chance you know what model it is? I'm assuming it's a Mark VI, which is (in my opinion, and countless other sax player's opinions) the best saxophone ever made. Almost all professional players use the Mark VI. Watch any rock and roll sax player and he's most likely playing a VI. They're a really versatile instrument in that they can handle any type of playing from classical to rock to jazz, whereas other pro model saxes such as the Conn 10m are more suited to one particular style. They also have the most ergonomic keywork, so much so that most modern saxes have almost identical key layouts.

  2. I see tons of threads on here about guitar players and their setups, but are there any out there who are fellow saxophone players? If so, tell us about your gear, playing experience, interesting sax stories, etc.

I've been playing sax for about 12 years, and just recently got back into after about a 5 year hiatus. I'm focusing on tenor sax right now since my alto is currently in the shop, unplayable. As far as my gear, for tenor I have an early 1950's Buescher Windsor (second line instrument, similar to the Aristocrat) and for alto I have a Bundy II which is the sax I learned on, and a King Zephyr which is the one currently in for repairs. So let's hear from the other saxists out there.

  3. That rant wasn't directed at anyone in particular, it was just me being frustrated with all the guitar snobs who think that synth has no place in rock music and that all rock music should be hard rocking guitar only.

I love synth, and I especially love synth in Rush songs. Power Windows is my favorite Rush album because of the fact that it's so synth heavy. As for Alex's guitar being shoved to the back in those synth heavy songs, I disagree, Power Windows has some of Alex's best solos i.e. Emotion Detector, The Big Money, Middletown Dreams. The same can be said about Geddy's bass parts on the album, I think PW has some of Geddy's most dynamic and interesting bass lines.

This rant wasn't only about Rush either; I'm sick of hearing things like "AC/DC is so awesome, they rock so much!" I think AC/DC is the perhaps the worst band I have ever heard in my life. Every single song they have written sounds exactly the same. They all have the same chords, same riffs, same drum beats, and same vocals. Even when they got a new vocalist, the vocals sounded the same. I keep hearing songs from their new album on the classic rock station and sound just like the shit from their old albums. There was a guy who wrote into the radio station about the recent AC/DC concert and said something like "they didn't need to keep changing guitars throughout the show like some bands do, they used the same guitars all night." They don't need to change guitars because all of their songs are in the same damn key, the key of suck major.

  4. Why does everyone seem to think that every single goddamned album in the world has to have the "hard rock kick-ass rock your face off overdriven to the point that you can't make out any notes guitar turned up to 11 synths aren't rockin' enough" sound to them? Every single complaint I see about Presto and Roll the Bones is "They don't rock enough" or "the guitar isn't hard enough." Same things with Hold Your Fire and Power Windows: "there's too much synth." I'm sick of it, why the hell does everything have to be about guitars? Sure, guitar is great in music, but not all music has to have a dominant guitar part. Why can't people appreciate the music for what it is and stop bitching about what it isn't?
  5. Yeah, Jon now has both versions of the 4080: the 4080/6 and the 4080/12. I'm amazed you managed to find the 4080/12 as there were only a handful of those made. The 4080/6 is pretty rare itself, but the /12 is nearly impossible to come by.

Let me know if you ever want to part with one of them, I'll gladly take them off your hands for you.

  6. Great job, the songs sound great, awesome tone you've got there.

One thing though, what is with people calling the song "Spirit of the Radio"? It's "The Spirit of Radio." It always bothers me when people say it wrong.

"I've got a bike you can ride it if you like- its got a basket..." blah blah blah - name that song biggrin.gif

Bike by Pink Floyd, from "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn." But I don't think that's the answer to the topic at hand.

is it the "what the heck is this huge thing" song?

Yeah, part 5 of the Gangster of Boats Trilogy.

This might be a bit difficult as it's hard to tell what the thing in the picture is...I'll give a couple hints if no one gets it soon.

*Ok, you got me - it really WAS because of you in that Moodies thread. yes.gif wink.gif

    I knew it!

Also, I request more Moodies for next week, if you don't mind. How about "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" from the '88 album "Sur La Mer?"

Oh, and since you had a little trouble with my name last time, you can just call me John, much easier to figure out how to pronounce that one.

  10. Hey, what was that "speed metal of acoustic guitars" song called? I can't remember who you said it was by or what it was called. Awesome show, I'm glad I finally got to listen the whole way through this time. Great song choice for the opener too, did my responses in the Moody Blues thread inspire you to play it?
