I'll keep listening to King Diamond's album "Them" instead... Grandma makes some damn good tea, the old bitch.

I like Conspiracy better than Them but think both had better flowing stories than CA does. Although I do like the music and a lot of the ideas in CA, the story is just too choppy. And it was nice to see that CA was not just another long attack on religion like S&A was. I would have liked CA to be a little more fantastical, it doesn't seem like a lot was done with the steampunk setting.

As time goes by and I listen to the CD over, and over, and over, and...

    Here's what I'm stuck on:

Protagonist (Luke Skywalker type) leaves his village for adventure.
We get some insight into the local belief system.
He hits the city - most folks seem to like the Watchmaker/Angel system.
There's an anarchist who has a lot of baggage - we never hear from him again.
Protagonist joins up with Carnies, meets a girl, love gone bad...
He tries to find an elusive city, doesn't go great.
Shipwrecked - on purpose! Never has such a bad situation been put to such good music!
We hear a song (HF) that says he would do it all again (wow, really? There must be a lot in the novel that we don't know about)
Faith system didn't work well (all those surprised, please raise you hands).
For all those rats along the way - FU!
Settle down to a bucolic lifestyle to end his days...end on cello!

No TIE fighter attack on the Deathstar
No speech before the Priests at Syrinx
No boredom with milk and honeydew
No sending the Borg to the 4th quadrant of the galaxy

It's a very odd story if you ask me (which you didn't)...it's actually not clear what the heck happens; whether the watchmaker and those mechanical angels are good/bad/of the Sith/or just misunderstood.

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE this album! Just trying to pull the story thread out of the album cloth. I will say, darn clever of those guys to give just enough away to make me buy the book.

Great summary! I agree completely in loving the CD but the story is definitely a bit vague. I am hoping instead of comedy videos for this upcoming tour that they have mini-Clockwork Angels movies that will hopefully fill in some gaps or at least be really cool to watch.

  3. QUOTE (Running Rebel @ Jun 25 2012, 01:29 PM)
To me it holds the greatest irony of any Rush song in that it is evangelical.

I said this somewhere else but I think that Wish Them Well could be taken as evangelical as it is basically saying "Turn the other cheek." Seems like I have heard that somewhere before... biggrin.gif

As to the Clockwork Angels/Watchmaker ideas, I think the Clockwork Angels are the main attraction at a spiritual center for the population, kind of like St. Peter's Basilica. Whether they are "spiritual machinery or regular machinery" is up to the listener.

  4. QUOTE (launchpad67a @ Jun 25 2012, 10:38 AM)
I love this album and couldn't be more pleased with it. There are hints of some many previous years within the songs. Can't wait to hear it live!

I agree, throughout the album I will think that little part sounds like Power Windows or other older albums. I am really liking this album and I was one of those who hated S&A right when it came out and it has never grown on me in the years since. I love the first 5 songs and Headlong Flight and I think The Wreckers is probably my favorite of the whole album. This album has a lot more metal than S&A, and to me that is a good thing. I am actually excited for a Rush tour for the first time since VT and even though they aren't coming anywhere near me, I am going to make the effort to see this tour. It should be interesting and more than a little different with the strings.

I think the biggest problem with CA is that the story is way too disjointed, it's almost like random chapters from a book and many times a song will have basically nothing to do with the song that preceded it. Even the intro text to the songs doesn't eliminate this problem. And I think the album definitely fades a bit in the second half. The Garden should have been a lot shorter, kind of like the closing minute of Hemispheres.

  5. This is a game changer for me, I will now make every effort to attend both legs of the tour even though they are not stopping anywhere near me in leg 1 at least. It seems like I have been negative about Rush for several years now as I disliked S&A and their last few tours have all been a little too similar for my tastes with not enough differences in the setlists. I am really liking CA though and hearing this news has me excited to see this. I have been wanting new and different and Rush is providing!
  6. QUOTE (J2112YYZ @ Jun 14 2012, 09:51 PM)
Don't you mean bored everyone to death and pissed off most of the fanbase instead of "caught by surprise?" They seriously couldn't have screwed up more than playing such a slow paced boring album live. On CD it's an alright listen, but live there are just too many slow spots.

I know I would have been enraged if I had attended that concert but then I didn't really care for A Matter of Life and Death. I don't think any of Maiden's newer albums should be played in their entirety live, the songs are too long with too many slow spots for a concert. The Final Frontier really grew on me and I like it a lot now but I don't even think that should be played in its entirety live.

Back to Rush, I have only had the chance to hear CA once but I would be against playing the whole thing, but to stick to the thread I will say only 30% due to Ged's voice issues, he really didn't sound that great for a lot of shows on the TM tour and that was with all the instrumentals.

So to be clear: all these [potential] awesome seats were scored through the promoter website? (livenation/ticketmaster)

For concerts in my experiences, yes. Some venues also have box office sales day of, and some of those are venue-driven, some TicketMaster driven. But, I have bought good "day of" seats to sporting events at StubHub, and know a friend who has gotten good "day of" seats through StubHub for concerts.

And since it was brought up, as others have mentioned, this is certainly not a guaranteed way to get good seats. The times I have gotten lucky, I got squat in the presales, and bought my "backup" lawn or nosebleed seats. Once I scored the new ones, I dumped the others to a buyer at the venue.

(Actually, for one Rush show several years ago, I had seats around Row 20 on the floor. I bought a "day of" ticket on row 5 at the venue box office. About 20 minutes before show time, I walked up to the nosebleeds. I found a young guy in a Rush T-shirt sitting by himself. I asked him if he was by himself, and when he said "yes," I just gave him my row 20 seat. It was worth the cost of that ticket to see his face light up. After about 3 "Are you serious?!" he finally got out of his seat to head for his upgraded seat on the floor.)

    Class act.

The advice in this thread is true, it works most of the time but is not guaranteed.

  8. The following evil money making ticket formula applies to most shows with assigned seating that I have ever kept track of:

Sell only bad/not great seats during pre-sales and for the first month or two that tickets are on public sale because only fanatic fans buy that far in advance and will many times just be glad to know they have a ticket. True fans are your lowest priority because they will buy tickets no matter what and it's even better to soak them with scams like VIP if you can. Then try to entice more casual fans to attend by offering better seats closer to the event. The bottom line is that waiting is never a bad thing. In this age of stubhub and ebay, nothing is ever sold out and you will always get a ticket, most times close to cost.

I went to R30 with no tickets at all and found great seats for only $5 above face value. The scalper guy had a wide variety of seats as well, something you don't get when buying via computer.

  9. QUOTE (Sin City @ May 13 2012, 03:20 PM)
To be frank, it was a bit of a dud live. They had to put a really cheesy synth in between armageddon and cygnus as Alex could never seem to get the roland guitar synthesiser to work properly. The irony is they could probably pull that off very easily these days with current technology, just a shame that Ged would tear his vocal chords out trying.

I think Hemispheres is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written but have to agree with your comment about the live version being a bit of a dud. While I wasn't old enough to experience it for myself, I never thought it came off well in all the bootlegs I have of it (and I am a live music freak). I would still love for them to try it again though, although they might have to detune it too much.

  10. QUOTE (Alchemical @ May 1 2012, 11:26 PM)
This is unfortunately true and probably the main reason CA is going to be the final album. Geddy's voice is at its breaking point. I really can't see it lasting past R40.  eh.gif

I agree, Geddy's voice was sounding a little ragged on the TM tour stop that I saw. I also wanted to chime in with a few others that I don't find most of their skits to be that funny. It didn't bother me really before but if you added up the opening/closing skits on the TM tour, it came to about 11 minutes. That's way too long.

  11. Interesting opinions here! I'll add my own now.

    1. Rush has not written a good complete album since Power Windows. That is the last CD they released that I can listen to from beginning to end without wanting to skip any songs. Every release since then has been about half good songs, half forgettable ones (except for S&A which I think was all bad).

    2. Their first few albums were the same way (half good half bad). Honestly does anyone listen to side 2 of 2112 or Fly By Night?

    3. Vapor Trails is the best thing they've done since Power Windows. While it still falls into my half good, half bad song breakdown, the good here is very good.

    4. S&A still sucks. While I hate the lyrics, the music lets me down here too. The hard edge of Vapor Trails is completely gone. I won't get into the whole atheistic debate again but I don't like his lyrics in this album at all.

  12. My advice would be (with apologies to Douglas Adams) Don't Panic! Last Rush show in Salt Lake City, I didn't like the seats in the presales and refused to pay the VIP extortion prices but checked the venue website a couple of times a week all the way to the concert. About three weeks before the concert, I got seventh row center (non-VIP and better than many seats I had seen under VIP). For Alanis Morrisette I saw front row tickets mysteriously become available on the venue website the week of the show while my wife got 5th row when she went to the venue box office the minute sales opened up. A few weeks ago Dead Can Dance ticket sales started and I got 4th row center much later in the afternoon on the first day, which were by far the best seats that I had seen to that point.

Obviously this is something of a crapshoot but the point is don't accept a seat you don't like because it's in the presale or you are worried about the show selling out. Think of it like a greedy businessman, anyone buying in the presale is a rabid fan and will probably go to the show no matter what seats they get. It makes financial sense to give those people bad seats and to save the good seats for casual people who might be more enticed to go to a show if they had great seats. Evil but that's the way the world works nowadays.

  13. QUOTE (tas7 @ Apr 17 2012, 02:46 AM)
The biggest shock I got was from Power Windows to Hold Your Fire, and the move from Roll The Bones to Counterparts was dramatic as well.

Completely agree. 1986-87 was rough for me for many reasons but the double whammy of Genesis' horrid Invisible Touch in '86 and the not quite as horrid HYF in '87 really hurt. In the years since, I have come to like a couple of HYF songs but I still think it's the worst album they ever did, except for maybe S&A. Invisible Touch still sucks though!

And to get back on topic, I didn't notice any big outrage at my junior high when Signals came out. GUP was another matter as I know a lot of people gave up on them then.

    QUOTE (rushgoober @ Mar 24 2012, 10:45 PM)
The day Vapor Trails was released was by far my worst moment in over 30 years of being a Rush fan.  I went from insane excitement and anticipation to absolutely crushing disappointment. sad.gif

This exactly sums up My days when HYF, RTB and S&A came out

Totally agree about all 3 of those, I like Vapor Trails though but do hope it gets remastered. For me HYF was the most disappointing release ever, I think every album they did was great until then.

  15. I voted Freeze with Emotion Detector a very close second. Fountain would have been my first pick but I am trying to keep it realistic.

I remember hearing rumors in bootleg trading circles many years ago that Geddy's cousin/brother/relative has a bootleg tape of a show from Toronto on the CoS tour that has Fountain on it so it's possible it could be ineligible for this list. I know, take it for what it's worth. Considering how long it took for Black Forest to come out, it wouldn't surprise me if someone is still holding on to this.

  16. QUOTE (CruisingInPrimetime @ Mar 20 2012, 07:50 PM)
Live versions I think sound better than the studio versions:

The Weapon - GUP 1984 dvd

This X 1000! This is a fantastic live song that I cannot understand why they don't play it anymore. My contributions to this list that haven't already been mentioned are:

By-Tor/The Necromancer - ATWAS tour. By Tor segueing to the Necromancer worked really well and I wish they would have played this more.

Vital Signs - RTB tour (I have a Charlotte bootleg that is really good)

  17. I'm too lazy to make one up but you all have done a great job. It's actually depressing because I am sure I would prefer any one of the lists in this thread to the actual setlist in the next tour. Rush really needs to vary up the setlist more, it seems they only change 4-5 songs per tour and many times they just bring a song back from two tours ago.
