It hit me right now:Red Sector A

But it's unbelievably boring to play, from beginning to end.

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt there no bass in RSA? 2.gif

I don't think there is any bass in that song either. I think it's all keyboards confused13.gif

That correct, but its still a bass played by keyboard.

    And its basic stuff.

So its easy to play on bass.

I've played along with RSA to build endurance & practice precise timing over the years, and i must say it's NOT easy to play.

With two fingers that is. It's not too hard to play with a pick as you can just up pick/down pick all the way through. But pumping out all those notes with your RH for 5 minutes is a difficult workout!

The LH stuff is simple of course, but you still haver to nail all the note changes perfectly like a sequencer to do it right.

Everything is a steady stream of sequenced 16th notes (until the instrumental section), and any time you're a slight bit off timing-wise, you hear the mistake big time.

Another way to play it is to strum all the 16th notes with your index finger the way Geddy does in "Animate", etc. This is easier on the RH compared to plucking, but again it comes down to timing.

That's the eternal question, now isn't it?

Best thing you can do is back off the volume during lulls with either a volume pedal or the the volume pot on the guitar. I have heard of guys stuffing the f-holes with cotton, but I never understood that.

I guess it is! (Funny, i've never had a problem with my basses feeding back. tongue.gif )

I thought about the volume pot idea, but i'd like to keep it as original as possible.

And so far "stuff it" has been the popular response. I'm just wondering what Alex has done with his 335/355s? In the studio is one thing but on stage with those huge amps/cabinets all those years?

  3. I've only been posting on *this* Rush forum for a couple of weeks, and somehow i missed this Bass Guitar sub-forum!

    Hello fellow bass players! bekloppt.gif

Awesome to look through the thread and see & read about everbody's cool gear. (Jon- nice WAL bass! drool1.gif )

    I have:

    1x Ibanez SR-5000-SA w/ circa 1988 EMG pickups (natural)

1x Ibanez SR-1000 w/ EMG pickups (laser blue)

    1x G&L L-2000 (translucent butterscotch)

1x Kubicki X-Factor (repainted piano black)

plus... 1x modified fing.gif G.Lee Signature Fender Jazz

Someone back there (sorry!) has a modified G.Lee signature they bought 2nd hand and it's similar to the one i just bought! I found one 2nd hand also with a HipShot D-tuner, a dual-concentric tone knob, a mirrored light-blue WD Products Std Jazz Bass pickguard, and get this- under the pickguard is a badly routed battery compartment for the on-board preamp! I brought it to the luthier i know here outside of Toronto, and he confirmed it was an EMG preamp and that the pickups were the original vintage '62 Fenders. The concentric tone was for mid-range freq & boost-cut. He also said, "that's the worst-looking battery compartment i've ever seen!" 062802puke_prv.gif It DOES look terrible.

The preamp & hipshot can be removed, but the re-drilled pickguard holes & the gouged-out battery compartment has wrecked any chance of the bass becoming "original" again. A bass friend of mine has a Fender Jazz with an active preamp hooked up to old passive J-bass pickups & it sounds amazing.

I could return it to being as original as possible, or i could go with the preamp idea. What do you think i should do?

  4. Although i'm a bass player first & foremost, i've been playing guitar off & on for 20+ yrs now. I bought this 2003 PRS Hollowbody II (Blue Matteo) as an upgrade from my CE-22, and it's simply the best-sounding & best-playing guitar i've ever picked up:

But i do have a question for any owners of hollowbody guitars (Gibson 335, 355, Ibanez, etc): I brought the HBII down to Faithdown's studio & when i plugged in to Tones' huge rig (custom tube head into effects rack & MESA Rectifier cabinets) it was feeding back like a freak! sad.gif On my little 50w amp at home it's fine. How do we control the feedback?

    Thanks in advance!

  5. I traded a low serial number Steinberger XL-1 bass for a 1996 black PRS CE-22 back in 2001. The black PRS CE was replaced by a black cherry PRS Custom 22, and now that's up for sale.

Looking back- boy, do i miss the Steinberger bass! sad.gif

  6. When i was starting out waaaay back when, i would play certain parts of Rush songs only. Once i had those down i would work on the harder parts and eventually get the whole thing.

    Cygnus X-1: intro

    Grand Designs: verses

    Mystic Rhythms: 2nd verse

Red Barchetta: breakdown ("wind...in my hair")

Time Stand Still: instrumental section (part in 7)

Some easier whole songs: The Pass, War Paint, RTB, Bravado, Face Up, Entre Nous, Different Strings, Witch Hunt...
