  1. If you can send audio out from your turntable to your PC, you could make your own CD? I would not be surprised if this version is available for download as well from some too much time on their hands member of the former USSR.

    Back when I owned vinyl, I played albums only to record them to another medium that was scratch proof and worked in my car or walkman, like cassette tape.

  2. 16 bit 44.1 khz is CD Audio. Itunes supports ALAC, same idea of encapsulating WAV as flac. Google FLAC ALAC and some converters will pop up in the list.

    Both the HDTracks and the new remix CD are missing the pops, clipping and do not hurt my ears.

    If only these versions had come out originally, but then what would we have had to complain about on these forums?

  4. I have the Vapor Trails remaster from HD Tracks. I personally thought that fixed most of the problems with the original. Separation of instruments instead of mud fest, pops and clicks gone, and it is not tiring to listen to from start to finish.

    If I had known this full remix was coming I probably would have waited before purchasing the HD Tracks....

  5. It probably won't be much of a difference unless your computer can actually output in 96/24 and you have a nice pair of headphones or speakers.

    I plan to copy them to a DVD and play them on my blu-ray player through the Onkyo receiver over digital coaxial (SPDIF).

    I also plan to downsample to 44.1khz/16bit and burn a CD for the car.

    Like I wrote previously, the Moving Pictures 30th anniversary remaster CD was a noticeable improvement over the original.

    I was just wondering if someone had grabbed the Hemispheres HDTracks and had and opinion in comparison to other released versions.

  6. I have the original Hemispheres CD, purchased in '87 or '88.

    822 547-2 M-1

    Made in W. Germany

    No scratches or problems with the disc, but I am wondering if I would hear more or be positively surprised by the sound of the HDTracks 96/24 flac compared to the original CD.

    As background, I bought the HDTracks Vapor Trails and it fixes almost all the problems, to my ear, of the original VT CD.

    I also have the Moving Pictures CD+DVD 30th anniversary edition and that CD is so much better than the Original CD release from the 80s and made in W. Germany that I also own, that the difference is very easy to hear.

  7. From the Alex Lifeson interview in the CA fanpack:

    "Our plan is to remix it. We've always planned to remix it, for years; our sound engineer, Rich Chycki, is working on that right now. It's our intention to have it as a bonus on the release of this album."

    That did not happen obviously, but there is another mention in the fanpack specifically in the VT section of the discography:

    "At the time of writing, it's being remixed from scratch, and the eventual reissue may sound much clearer by comparison."

    I would wait if I were you.

  8. If the people who pre-ordered the fan pack get their name on the poster, it is not outside the realm of possibility that the CDs could have been personalized with the time the purchaser wanted.

    Rush may have missed out on another $5 to $15 in upcharge for that privilege.

    Picking the time would have made me happy.

    When was the last time Rush made me happy? Oh yeah, The Time Machine tour, their music makes me happy.

  9. I looked at "Create Poll" and the options seemed to be limited to picking one item of many.

    To get a better idea of how people rank the recordings, for example, a way to order multiple choices and then submit the ordered list would be nice.

    For all 18 original recordings, in a weighted average poll, placing a recording at #1 by the voter would give it a weight of 18, the recording placed at #2 a weight of 17, all the way down to the least favorite at position #18 receiving a weight of 1. (Note that the weights could be scaled or fractionally incremental in a more complex scenario, but I chose linear for simplicity.)

    So, Person A ranks the following

    1. Hemispheres

    2. 2112

    14. Vapor Trails

    18. Rush

    Person B

    2. 2112

    4. Hemispheres

    10. Rush

    14. Vapor Trails

    2112 = 17 + 17 = 34

    Hemispheres = 18 + 15 = 33

    Vapor Trails = 5 + 5 = 10

    Rush = 1 + 9 = 10

    This would give a better indication of sentiment towards particular recordings instead of simply tallying the absolute number of votes for a favorite. Although 2112 was not #1 for either user in the above example, it tended higher overall.

    I imagine more complex polling is a feature of the board software and out of the control of the admins of this board. If such a feature is available and I missed it, feel free to doh.gif me.
