  1. Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah....

Would you like some cheese with that whine?

Hmmm that kind of political rhetoric belongs in SOCN not here.

I am way overtired today so if there is supposed to be humor in your comment I'm simply missing it.

However, my moment of snark had no intentional political under (or over) tones to it whatsoever.

  2. Peeps on both sides of the setlist debate gotta chill a bit until Friday at earliest and really Sunday TBH.

As somebody astutely pointed out earlier there are many songs on the list we've seen that are similar lengths so they could easily be rotated.

There's no guarantee anybody will see JL and TCE on the same night (or any other combinations of songs you can think of)

By this time Friday night the first show will be wrapping up and we'll be able to have a much better feel for where the band is taking this tour.

  3. What happened to all the johnnyonthespot posts about spoiler songs being rehearsed?

Other than the anarchrist not one of the songs mentioned as spoliers are in here

    Kooky

I know I mentioned Prelude and Far Cry by name and eluded to NatSci and JL

This isn't the entire setlist.... more will be revealed Friday night.

  4. If this is really the entire set list, it's very disappointing.

As I stated in the twitter feed this is NOT a comprehensive setlist. Only a list of the video credits for this tour.

It does not include any songs that don't have a video presentation nor does it indicate that every song will be played every night. Nor do these credits indicate where in the setlist any particular song might end up.

22 songs have video credits. Assuming that the assumption that there will be songs rotating on a nightly basis is true I would guess there will be anywhere from 4-8 additional songs played during this tour.

  5. I'm a lyrics kinda person so when I get personally invested in a song with amazing lyrics it consumes me to a degree and that has been the case with Nemo since I read the following quote from T.H.:

"Not the fish! I cannot believe how everyone seems to be convinced it’s that. Nemo, which is Latin for "nobody," has nothing to do with the Disney film. It revolves around the feelings I have from time to time. I feel nameless and do not know who I am or where I will go. I only know my past and I long to be back there. The song is about being lost, not knowing where to go or what to do, yet desperate for everything in life. That’s not always me, but when I wrote Nemo, that’s the way I felt. Now I feel better." (Translated from the German)

    –Tuomas Holopainen, Underground Empire

There have been times in my life when I could totally relate to those feelings so the song hits me VERY hard.

  6.

Speaking of setlists, they did their first change at last night's show. They played Ever Dream in place of Nemo. The fans got a song upgrade with that switch.

I wouldn't call it an upgrade TBH.

Floor + Nemo = some serious chills.

  7. I got to see Nightwish in Philly while I was on vacation and let me tell you it was something special to see Floor live!

She has an **AMAZING** stage presence. Plain and simple she owns the entire venue from the moment she walks onto the stage until the lights come up.

As for you guys who say drop GLS... I say "BITE ME!" LOL

Then again, this was the first time I actually got to see the band live in person so.... yeah ;)

As for EFMB... I finally had the opportunity to get into the album on my drive east and there are many bright spots and a few not so bright IMO.

Weak Fantasy is absolutely brilliant. (and it will own your soul live)

I understand that many people out there strongly disagree with the message of the song, but if you put that aside and just take it for a song...it's friggin beautiful (save the "Condescending Ape" line).

TGSOE is amazing (if not a bit too long). Yes, they could have trimmed off a few minutes and nobody would have blinked but I get why T.H. wanted it like it is. The Dawkins quotes are brilliant. "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones" Love it!

Again, if you don't agree with the message (which many wont) at least enjoy the song itself.

    Now for a couple pans:

    1. I'm not a fan of Elan in the context of this album. Maybe I just don't see how it fits lyrically.... but musically as well it's the odd man out.

    2. I don't like how the first 3/4 of the album is a prelude of sorts to TGSOE. There are so many pieces throughout the album which get repeated in TGSOE... it's a bit irritating.

    3. I absolutely hate the very beginning of the title track. It sounds like a bad New Order song TBH.

That's about it. I'm hoping to get to go to Toronto tomorrow (today?) to see them again but the show is sold out and I'm not going to drive 4 hours each way just to be shut out. I can't go to Cleveland on Friday since I have to work and Buffalo is just too far away :(

Let me wrap up this little rant with one of my (many) favorite lines from the new album...

    WE WERE HERE!!!

  8. So this photo was posted Monday morning. Ged and Al arriving in LA to begin rehearsals for R40.

They always rehearse in Toronto on past tours, is this Ged and Al just being accommodating to Neil,

or is this a sign that Neil made the decision to do things his way?

With the tour wrapping in LA, it seems very much like they boys did whatever to make Neil happy.

Either way, let's hope they are working out all the kinks and make the R40 show phenomenal!!

They don't always rehearse in Toronto as a band before a tour.

CA they rehearsed in L.A. as well. And I remember at least one previous tour where they did 3 weeks in Memphis. (can't remember which tour that was off the top of my head right now).

I'm going to guess the conversation went something like this....

Neil: Guys, would you wanna spend a month in sunny California rehearsing? I'd really love to not leave O. for an additional month. There are plenty of great rehearsal spaces we can rent.

Geddy & Alex in unison: Sure!!

Don't read anything into it other than it works for everybody.

  9. "During these sessions we were experimenting with an unusual type of microphone called a "PZM," or Pressure Zone Microphone. It only picks up direct sound--no reverberated signals. On this track and on "Vital Signs," we used it taped onto my chest! It re-created that special "drummer's perspective"; the balance and dynamics that you hear when you play. In the overall mix it's used as an overhead or ambience mic' to enhance and naturalize the complete drum mix. If any of you happened to see the video that we made for "Vital Signs," you may have noticed the great lump of metal that was growing out of my chest. That was the PZM."
