  1. QUOTE (Mustard Death @ Jun 5 2007, 09:34 PM) QUOTE (HigherWater @ Jun 5 2007, 10:22 PM) Prog= Music that takes a little time to 'get' which is why progressive bands struggle for the recognition they so richly deserve... They also spend more time perfecting their craft than applying makeup. Now that's what I don't get. Just because they spend time carving out some intricate riff on their fretboard's or putting some f***ing Fibonacci sequence in their composition doesn't mean it should be any more difficult to "get" than the most basic, three chord punk rock song. It's music, not advanced mathematics!! The word progressive (when used with music at least), to me, is a pure, organic feeling you get when you hear the music. Not some mechanical, soulless feeling you get the fifth time you listen to the record. But probably most importantly, I think the word "prog" is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder. It's probably the genre or label of music that people see differently the most. Which makes debates/arguments like this cool. All in all, I find Thievery Corporation (an electronic breakbeat/dub duo) far more progressive than anything Dream Theater has ever released... simply because they have so much influence, groove, and just overall amazing sound that I've never heard before packed into most of their songs. And they just so happen to not feature extended solos, odd time signatures, or any other prog stereotypes. As usual you take the desire to argue to a level I simply don't wish to challange. ( nice reference to the fibonacci sequence though) I know absolutely nothing about the "electonic breakbeat dub/duo" of which you speak, nor do I care. I'm just an old metal head that likes to hear people play an instrument at the highest level. Does DT sometimes lack groove? Yes Does DT sometimes overplay? Yes Does DT write songs that are very long? Yes Does DT deliberately use odd time? Yes So what? It pleases my ear, it makes me strive to become a more accomplished musician. If I want to hear groove I'll listen to Led Zeppelin. And even if I listen to some band that noone on this board gives a crap about; oh, I'm sorry breakbeat dub/duo; I won't use it in a post for the purpose of looking somehow superior to others.. By the way, I'm sick to death of your rediculous avatar. Have a nice night, Systematic Chaos awaits...
  2. I really don't care if DT is progressive or metal or shred or country or rap or classical or jazz; what Dream Theater is, is the finest collection of musicians ever assembled in one band. The new album challenges the ear like the last 6 have. They take multiple listens to fully understand....In fact that may be a good definition of 'prog.' Prog= Music that takes a little time to 'get' which is why progressive bands struggle for the recognition they so richly deserve... 4. QUOTE (tick @ May 23 2006, 05:44 AM) QUOTE (HigherWater @ May 20 2006, 04:10 PM) DT fanatic checking in. What to say about such an extrodinary band. I gave up trying to convince the DT haters a long time ago. It's like trying to convince RS magazine that Rush should be in the Hall of Fame. I still havn't heard Misunderstood live, that will be like hearing Camera Eye. As for personal performance, I think people dislike MP personally and that affects his approval rating as a drummer. I, for one, find his antics annoying but his drumming can and usually is spactacular. JP is just a witch. He's been wrongly accused of being a straight shredder; check out Hollow Years on the Budokon DVD. Rudess is in a class by himself Myung is.....Myung ...And I gave up rating singers a long time ago. They are of course, JUST SINGERS! JUST SINGERS ! IVE BEEN SINGING FOR TWENTY YEARS AND WITHOUT A GOOD SINGER ANY BAND SUCKS ! Ahh, don't take it personally Tick. Singers have a damn hard job. I have a huge amount of respect for what they have to do every night. I'm just poking a little fun at the James LaBrie's and Geoff Tate's of the world that see themselves as Man-Diva's. I just read an interview with LaBrie where he talks about his Broadway dreams. Give me a break! I will politely disagree with you on one point, though. In a band like Dream Theater, success is enhanced by the offerings of the singer but they'd be just fine with Bippy the Wondermutt behind the mike.
