Did he leave at one point?  Is it incorrect to say that he has not been credited on recent reissues?

Yes, he did indeed leave after the Permanent Waves Super Deluxe. I've seen that in print and he has told me that himself. No hard feelings or anything. He just had other projects to which he wanted to devote his time. I do not believe he is credited on the Moving Pictures Super Deluxe and I didn't buy the concertless Signals Super Deluxe so I don't know about that one. I just know he told me he did not work on that one.

Thanks for posting this. It's very interesting.  Though the mention they cataloged the vault there is no specific mention of any live material in this conversation. There's evidence that there is a vault but no evidence of what's in there aside from work in progress demos which kind of dispel the myth that there are no demos.

    Here ya go: https://bravewords.com/news/rush-producer-director-talks-about-upcoming-dvds

Though, beware. Many in RUSH fandom hate the author of this article for whatever reason. Be that as it may, everything he has ever told me has absolutely come true. Hey, I don't like the author's politics but I do enjoy when he contributes info like this article.

PS: Listening to the Geddy audiobook and just got through a chapter where he discusses when they started doing "proper" demos which was Power Windows. Those, most of us have heard on bootlegs and or YouTube (see below).

PSS: I don't think the Tom Sawyer stuff they were discussing in that interview above were "demos" but more works in progress on tape.

They are putting themselves out there. Alex was just shredding with Tool, working on Envy Of None and who knows what else and Geddy is on his book tour and released to new songs.. They're moving forward not back.

Geddy & Alex may be moving forward but Anthem/OLE control the back catalog and want to squeeze every penny out of their investment.

I'm late to the game here and there are too many comments on the thread to quote them all. Suffice it to say I agree more than wholeheartedly about an alternate live show, more specifically, one with the previous playlist that included the drum solo in the "Red Lenses" break. But a video version of the same is probably too much to hope for, isn't it?

This one DOES have the Red Lenses/Drum Solo if we are to believe the 2005 interview that the Grace footage was found.

    No.

In one of the Signals 40th Anniversary threads, you claimed that Andy Curran was still working for Anthem/OLE. This is not true and now you're stating "there is another" ala Return of the Jedi. Sorry, but this kinda makes me doubt anything you say.

However, I will say to the Grace fans, someone has shared something secret with me and it does look like a GUP Super Deluxe is definitely happening. Will it include a Blu-Ray of the full GUP video concert with restored footage and a CD of the full show? That is unknown so far.

  6. Here's the quote about the two unreleased songs:

"The former Rush bassist says he has a renewed songwriting spark that he credits to rediscovering two unfinished demo songs made in the late 1990s.

“Gone" and "I Am... You Are" were originally written for his 2000 solo effort "My Favourite Headache," but they didn't end up on the album. Lee came across them while sifting through the archives for his upcoming memoir "My Effin' Life." He shined them up, added new elements to finish them off and said he plans to release both on Tuesday as part of the audiobook version of his memoir, out the same day. His representatives say a digital and streaming release will follow."

Now does this mean a digital & streaming release for the two songs or the entire audio book?

To be clear, I don’t have any first hand info that that particular article was faked, I just remember that it was definitely him that many people here and elsewhere were making confident statements that he had made things up. Maybe someone with more details can clarify.

I hope it was real obviously, and as I said, I want any and all footage we can get from any era but that GUP concert in particular means so much to me. I really became a hardcore fan during 1984 and after finally getting a copy of ESL by the end of that year I was obsessed over it.

So when sometime (in 1985, I guess) a friend of mine (who was a very casual Rush fan) called me on a Saturday night to tell me a Rush concert was on MTV I literally said “ok thanks for telling me but I already have it on tape” and ignored it. Like half an hour later I go to my room and figured I’d turn it on while doing other stuff and did about 3 double takes soaking in the fact that it was brand new footage. then I cursed myself for not turning it on right away because I only caught the last 15 minutes or so.

So it ended and that was it. There was no way to find out where it came from or if I could buy it somewhere or what they played or anything. It’s almost hard to imagine pre-internet days now.

It seemed like it was just from weird dream for probably a full year until I luckily and randomly saw it for sale on VHS in a record store one day. I think I literally jumped up and down.

So trust me, I want more of it like crazy. I’m just keeping my expectations very low.

I hadn’t even really thought about the 50th anniversary much. With the ongoing 40th anniversary boxes I can’t imagine they’ll release any other audio or video media next year but I’ll be up for it if they do.

Meant to say, I realize this footage would potentially be part of the GUP 40th box. I just meant in general I wonder if it’s even possible that there will be any other audio or video for the 50th..

Unfortunately, I think they are going to ignore Grace & do some 50th Anniversary thing of the band. Hope I'm wrong.

  8. Here's the found footage interview from 2005: https://bravewords.com/news/rush-producer-director-talks-about-upcoming-dvds

    - I know Doug Maher is not well liked by many in Rush fandom but why does anyone think this interview is "faked?"

    - I do expect, if Geddy even responds to me, that his answer will be that Anthem/Ole has a team that handles that, Alex is usually consulted about those things, blah, blah, blah. I mean, here's a guy that said Ben Mink found his two unreleased songs as if he totally forgot they existed. Haha. So, I don't have much hope of getting a satisfying answer.

  9. Mine: Back in 2005, Peter Lamoureux stated: "We found the footage for the Grace Under Pressure Tour video concert. Down the road when Blue-Ray technology becomes more popular and we are able to extend things out to levels beyond where we are at currently...we can then go back and release the found footage that was not on the original release."

Will this footage (on Blu-Ray) and an audio CD FINALLY be released for 2024's anticipated Grace Under Pressure 40th Anniversary Box Set?

Since the release of the Grace Under Pressure Tour video cassette/laserdisc, I have dreamed of one day owning that entire show on video and audio. I want to be blown away seeing/watching the Red Lenses/Drum Solo, Between the Wheels and many other songs that had been cut. Will my dream be fulfilled?

I understand Geddy is not a "look back" guy and he's always looking forward to the next project. I also know Anthem (Ole') controls these things these days BUT I would think this has been discussed with Geddy and Alex and I'd love if Geddy could shed some light on what he knows?

I realize 2024 is the 50th Anniversary of the band and there may be all kinds of plans afoot but there's a lot of Post Terry Brown Era fans that have been salivating at the hope of a comprehensive Grace Under Pressure 40th Anniversary Box Set!

Thank you for your time and good luck on the book tour!

PS: I understand two unreleased songs from the My Favorite Headache sessions will be available this Tuesday. Will there be anywhere to download those in high quality FLAC format or are they only going to be available in lossy MP3 and or streaming?

I agree with this. I would grab up the box sets depending on the material, but I think I am not so foolish as to believe that there are enough people who would buy those sets to make it worth their while.

I will also agree with the notion that GUP is likely the final one if Signals isn't. Depending on how well this sells, GUP may not happen.

The superiority of the Terry Brown Only Era fans never stops surprising me. To believe that most Rush fans only care about Signals and before or that most walked away after Signals just shows ones age. Heck! I'm 54 and my first new Rush purchase was Grace Under Pressure! That's where my journey began. I LOVED the "keyboard era" so many of you crotchety old fans hate. I also love the 90s and all the way through to the end, what I consider to be their finest album, Clockwork Angels.

I've purchased the previous 40th Anniversary sets but my excitement level for them is nothing compared to the future releases of Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, Hold Your Fire, Presto, Roll The Bones, Counterparts and Test For Echo! To get full concert audio from all those tours is my fan dream come true, especially Grace!

  11. Questions sent! Here's how I phrased all the suggestions I received, with a few of my own questions added:

    1) Tell me about your formation years, and how did you get to become a producer. What drove you in this career path? Did you ever intend to write and play your own songs?

    2) What are your memories of working on Jimi Hendrix’ Axis: Bold as Love?

    3) When you worked with Rush, was all the material they brought in usually completed or did you have to help them expand or contract some songs? What was the song they brought that you changed the most?

    4) It’s no secret that Neil, along with the other members, could be somewhat stubborn when it came to altering his already conceived drum parts. What was it like sharing your thoughts about those kind of band issues in the studio?

    5) When Rush’s “A Farewell to Kings” was being recorded, what was the feeling like, recording in England, free from the pressure of the record company, since 2112 gave some semblance of artistic freedom?

    6) Was there ever any discussion at any point after Rush’s “Signals”, about you possibly working again with the band?

    7) Have you listened to all of Rush’s post-“Signals” material? What's your favorite album from their career after Signals?

    8) How difficult was it for Rush to transition from recording bed tracks "off the floor" as a band, to tracking individual performances? Whose idea was it? Do you feel that what was gained by such an approach overcame any losses?

    9) What qualities about Rush made you want to keep working with them after the first album? What did you see or hear in them that made you interested?

    10) I would love to know your thoughts about developing artists over a period of several albums as Rush were allowed to back in the 70s before they started really having major success. How do you view your role as producer in terms of having played a part in Rush’s development?

    11) Having worked with Lawrence Gowan way back before he became well known, what are your thoughts about Gowan's work with Styx?

    12) Can you share some details of producing Cutting Crew's album, The Broadcast? The production was excellent as was the songwriting!

    13) Do you see that sort of a relationship among band/producer/label as something that can ever come back in today’s music environment? Or is there some other way that the industry can foster artist development that doesn’t seem to be happening so much anymore?

    14) Tell me about working with IQ on their “Are You Sitting Comfortably?” album. Did they contact you because of your work with Rush? How did the sessions go? Did you enjoy the experience and final product?

    15) Voivod’s “Angel Rat” is a curious entry in the list of albums you produced. There was a lot of controversy among the band’s fan base when it was released, but through the years its reputation has been somehow redeemed. Was it a difficult album to work on?

    16) Next month is the 25th anniversary of Fates Warning’s “A Pleasant Shade of Grey”, so it seems like a nice time to ask you about that masterpiece. What can you tell me about that album – it’s a very dense collection of songs, full of ambition on the band’s part!

    17) Do you have any interest to work with Ray Alder or even Jim Matheos again, specifically to write vocal lines? Many fans really love the work you did with Ray on the Fates Warning albums (Parallels, A Pleasant Shade of Gray, Disconnected).

    18) Speaking of another famous prog band, apparently the relationship between you and Dream Theater did not end well. Would you like to shed some light into that, and maybe tell us your side of the story? You worked with them on “Metropolis Part II: Scenes From a Memory”, one of the highlights of their career!

    19) Metal / hard rock bands like Lizzy Borden and Fifth Angel speak wonders about working with you. How does your approach to production change, depending on the style of band you’re working with?

    20) What singers and bands would he like to work with (or hypothetically, would have liked to have worked with), including some bands who may not be active anymore or even from the past?

    21) Who are some producers or engineers that you particularly admire?

    22) Who are some specific songwriters you particularly admire? Both from the past or more recent.

    23) With all of the technology available, how come many albums recorded in the 80’s have a superior sound to an album recorded in the 2020’s?

    24) You have worked with so many stellar artists, Jimi Hendrix up to present day bands, the stories should be put down somewhere for history. Would you consider writing a book at some point?

    25) Your last production credit is 2021’s “Unfolded Like Staircase”, from Discipline. What are you working on at the moment?

You didn't ask him about a Signals Tour release for the 40th Anniversary! And, asking him if he's going to work on the Grace Under Pressure one would be fantastic as well!

  12. There are some shenanigans going on here on the live sample from the youtube preview...

At this point Geddy is singing "everybody got to elevate from the norm" ... but the note for "norm" is spot-on. Normally (in all cases I've heard) he will start the word a half-step down in pitch. It's odd and caught my ear the 1st time I heard the sample. And it doesn't jive from the aud recordings either...

I just have a feeling they have gone through the multi-tracks carefully and possibly made slight adjustments here and there.

    You're right, it's definitely different.

But it doesn't sound like they made an adjustment to my ears. It sounds more like a totally different take. Now we know Rush swear they never kept alternate takes, and there are none listed in the track list for this album, so my guess is what we're hearing in the unboxing video is actually the live rendition included in the "Live In YYZ" full concert recording. The drums and guitar sound a little more live to me as well, though it's weird that the vocal is so pronounced in the mix, but then that may just be the mix of the unboxing video and not the song itself.

In any case I find it very unlikely that they went back and doctored any of the studio recordings, especially without Neil in the room. It just wouldn't make sense seeing as 1. they haven't done that to any of the other albums since they've been doing these 40th anniversary releases, and 2. Moving Pictures is, note for note, perhaps the most perfect recording Rush ever made. I would not be surprised if the band themselves agreed with that sentiment.

    Ummm... It's the live version.

  13. Still no word on how to order this one for the RUSH Moving Pictures 40th Anniversary. What's confusing me: If I download to my PC, which is connected to my receiver, will it actually play in Dolby TrueHD 5.1?

"Finally, the sixth configuration, the Dolby Atmos Digital Edition, is the digital equivalent of Richard Chycki’s masterful Atmos mix of all seven tracks from the original album."
