What's the dif between the "block logo" versions and the older ones?

The earlier "script logo" pedals (as they have become know as) were made by MXR Innovations and used electronic components made in factories where tolerances were not checked or measured as frequently as they would soon be by the late 70's when the "block logo" pedals were made. What you ended up with was one Micro Amp, for example, that sounded different from the next (not much but noticable to the musicians ear) which was both a good and bad thing IMO. In other words, EVH's Phase 90 might be the only one in the world that sounded exactly like it.

By 1978, MXR had been bought (not sure if it was Dunlop) and the pedals went through a "value engineering" stage where cheaper components were sought out and used and tolerances were closely measured to ensure a consistent product. Still a good product but not the exact same as the script logos. The MXR pedals I own are all of this era and I believe that Alex would have used the same era of pedals since he started using MXR pedals at around this time. Although I have seen a picture of Alex using an MXR distortion + as early as "a farewell to kings" but it was in a back stage warm up situation. By the early 1980's dunlop owned the company and started making it's own version of the same pedals with even cheaper components and the addition of an LED. These pedals would never match the originals or the block logos.

I believe Alex used to use an MXR Distortion Plus in the early days.
There is always the Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor pedal but it goes for around $200US used.
Have you looked into the Hughes & Kettner Edition Blue combo amp? 60 watts, 1x12 and sounds really good.
Peavey's Classic 30 amp is another good one that runs about $350 on the used market.

I have a classic 30 and it is a sweet amp. It's a non bias amp so you can play around with different pre amp tube combinations which makes it very versatile.

I think the answer here is tubes. You are not going to get a true representation of a tube amp from a solid state amp with a pedal. Either change your amp out or start really reading all you can find on different distortion pedals and choose one.

  3. Yeah the tone is really close to my ears, it's just a little bright. There is a twang or a honk that amp is know for and it's key to his tone of that period and you've definitely got that tone. Try using more chorus with the tone knob on your CH-1 turned all the way down. The CE-1 Alex used is know for it's dark, thick - milkshake like tone. I had a CH-1 and got rid of it because it was too bright. What are you running the midrange knob at on the 4140? Mine is almost always dimed. I love the midrange tone that amp produces.

And I think the delay is set to a longer setting. Listen to the part where Ged sings "I remember" - the guitar's playing those single notes followed by the double stop on the higher strings, you can here the delay repeats right before he goes into the suspended B flat. The delay is set long.

As far as the D+ and Micro Amp go, are you using a new Dunlop version or the older original MXR pedals? The reissues from Dunlop are nowhere near the sound (IMO) of the original MXR's. You can find them on Ebay all day long too. Even the "block logo" versions are better than the Dunlop reissues.

  4. I agree. More chorus and delay. The delay is on most of the time in that song and the chorus sounds like it would work very will with the tone you are getting from the amp. On the CH-1, turn the tone know all the way down. The amp has plenty of highs all on it's own.

    great playing man.

    Thanks bro!

Yeah, I like the Avatar too. wink.gif

Oh..you took away your Mickey Mouse ears sad.gif

    tongue.gif

They actually got ruined on my last disneyland trip. sad.gif I left them on the dashboard in my car in the warm Califonia sun and the windshield bent one of the ears back towards the read of the hat. When I took them out of the car, the ear had melted and stuck that way. angry.gif Now when I wear the hat, I look even dumber than before. biggrin.gif

  6. Well, I recorded Tom Sawyer last night. I'm not completely happy with it but hey, this is just for fun. Having to record the guitar with only one amp sounds totally different than when I play with both amps. Having one wet and one dry signal to mix together would be ideal but that will have to wait until santa brings me another SM57. biggrin.gif Oh and Launchpad, I took your suggestion and separated the drums and guitar tracks which worked out really well. My 4-track has an EQ, one for left and one for right. Panning the drums a little right and the guitar a little left allowed me to EQ the two sounds somewhat independently for one another. Thanks for the tip.

Anyway, here is KirkDS on drums with Rushfan playing Tom Sawyer. Remember you may have to disable your pop up blocker or click "play the song".

Dunno if they're original or not. The baskets are red and appear to be fairly old but I'm not sure about the cones. I'm not really sure how to tell if either the cones/baskets are original.

If their red, their original. I would try using the combo speakers vs. the cabinets if you are really tying to nail the Lifeson tone. Alex did not use cabinets with his 4140's in the studio or live. Give the speakers a shot and see if there is a difference. Different speakers will break up at different volumes.

Jah, that may be the trick. I don't have any boost pedals but I do have an explorer with emg's and I'll give that a go.

I'm aware of all the tube stuff... I've got a 4x12 cab in an iso box and I'm driving it with the 4140, bypassing the combo's 2x12s. This way I can put the volume up to about 7 before ticking off the neighbors and the wife smile.gif

That 4x12 is coloring the tone from what you'd expect directly out of the combo, but I wouldn't expect it to give me the unsatisfactory tone that I was getting.

BTW... do you use both the micro amp and the d+ together?

No. I use one or the other. Micro Amp just boosts the natural sound of the amp and adds harmonics while the D+ distorts and compresses.

Does your amp have the original speakers?

  11. QUOTE (Xabiche @ Sep 18 2006, 08:40 AM)
Hey, I haven't had a chance yet to play with it more but hopefully this week I can spend some time with it.

My floyd strat has HSS and I'm using some crappy Boss digital chorus/delay pedals. But without a good dry tone those cheezy pedals can only make things worse. I'm going to play with it some more then take in to a good tech for a complete checkout.

I use that strat on my triaxis/395 and my Cauble and can't get satisfactory tones out of it, so it may just be that particular humbucker. My LPs and other guitars sound great through those other amps but I haven't had a chance to run them through the 4140. I did play an SG w/EMGs through it when I tried it out before buying and it sounded fine. Supposedly it has new Ruby's in it, but I haven't verified that.

Also, I run it through a mesa recto standard cab in an iso box.

What's the signal chain on your pedals?

The 4140 that I bought was supposedly one of three bought new for general use at the Austin Rehearsal Complex. A lot of big names like SRV probably spent some time using it. It's beat to hell and definitely has seen some heavy use. Personally, that kind of thing doesn't inspire me to buy gear... I just wanted the amp to get the '80s Rush tones smile.gif

I think you need an overdrive or distortion pedal to get what you are looking for. You said you tested it out with an EMG equipped guitar and it sounded fine right? Well EMG's are active pickups and much hotter than the pickup you are using in your strat so an overdrive will help make your signal hotter which the amp will react to. Also volume. Tube amps sound their best when cranked. You are not only getting the tubes to break up in the pre amp section but also the power amp tubes start to break up and that (IMO) is where the amp shines.

Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
