Whats a cool program I can download (preferably free  laugh.gif ) where I can edit pics like that.

There really isn't any free program that can amount to Adobe Photoshop. There may be some contenders, but they're really crap.

very cool pictures...i would like to get into this. wich version of photoshop do you use. confused13.gif

Tight enough to get rid of the wrinkles then tune that head to a desired pitch then match the top head to that pitch as well. If you find a note that is enharmonic to the shell itself then the drum will really sing!

thank cyg i will try that 1022.gif

I have alway used Remo Pinstripes.  I wanted to try something different, so I bought Evans G2 Coated heads and I hate them.  They sound like paper bags.

I am not a drum tuner by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I would rather pay someone to tune them than do it myself.

Anyway, I don't know if it the depth of my toms that is causing the problem (they are on older Tama Swingstar with real deep toms), or if it is a frequency discrepancy or what.

    Someone have a suggestion confused13.gif

Yeah, do what I did and go back to the Pinstripes!

As for tuning, I have found that is easier when changing heads to tune the bottom (resonant) head first. Start with the drum off the stand or mount. For fresh heads finger tighten all tension rods as far as possible then using a key get the head to the lowest even tension with no ripples in the head. Making a fist press down with your palm on the center of the head to seat it fully. You may do this a few times to help stretch and seat the head. Then again get the head to the lowest even tension. With a pair of sticks, take one stick and apply it to the center of the head perpendicularly to create a radius then tap lightly around the head about an inch from the rim at the tension points and tune them to the same pitch. If that pitch is too deep to your ear turn each rod a quarter, half, or full turn depending on the size of the drum and/or the pitch desired. Follow the above steps again until it sounds good to you.

Ideally you want the bottom and top heads to be the same pitch for the best tone. But there are other ways to tune a drum to achieve different tones. Some like to tune the top head lower than the bottom. This will give the drum a down ward note. If there is a too much dissonance then slack one of the rods a bit. Tuning the botom head lower is more difficult to get a good sound from. Generally these are tuned to enharmonic tones. Too much fuss and bother for me.

Anyway, I hope this helps. I tune drums fairly well but I have a couple of friends who are just amazing at it. They can get drums to just sing. I try and get tips from them and observe what they do. Whenever I gig I get compliments on my sound. That really doesn't mean a damn thing really, but they sound good to me. Always a work in progress. Especially now that I have new drums (well, not quite so new now). But I just got rid of the G2s and put Pinstripes on. Now I know what to expect from those.

i will try that as well just went through a set of g2's and i am getting ready to re skin my kit. one question since you don't hit the bottom head you should be able to re tune following your advice wright? they are seated and you suggest just tight enough to get rid of the wrinkles then tune the top to preferred sound? thanks for help
