  1. I have to ask - of anyone who would think less of Neil for retiring, or for wanting his personal space.

     

    Would you think less of your parents if they wanted to retire? Would you think less of them if they wanted to be left alone in their lives? Would you demand that they not live their own lives as they saw proper?

     

    He's a man, not an object to be used for our personal satisfaction. Just like your elders.

  2. It's a shame that there's no VST version of that sound. I'd love to pump a keyboard or a sequencer through it.

    I have to agree with one of those replies - I can get a really good tone, that IMO is *better* than the rockman (although similar in grit and sustain) just tinkering with what's available in Amplitube (for free, no VST plugins/addons from their store needed).

     

    Love that guitar tone on the first Boston album.

  3. Thanks everyone. While I know that I'm not going to play jazz or compose symphonies, I have a hard time telling notes apart. What's higher versus lower, never mind the notes themselves.

     

    Which is why I'm doing this now, with some discipline. It actually clicked last night and I did pretty good telling the difference between individual notes in a half vs a full step. The next exercise was telling the difference chords. a half step vs a full Like( (a,a#) or (a,b)) played at the same time. That was actually easier than the individual notes. the full step has more space in it.

     

    I can see where theory can turn you into a robot. Look at John Petrucci. Love him but he's Mr Math Metal. I just want to get good at hearing and playing by ear.

  4. Hello. Been lurking for years, and finally surfacing. Now that the swamp is being drained, I have to go somewhere. ;)

     

    Long story short, I have been playing guitar with tabs, and noodling on the keyboard for a couple of years. I decided that I wanted to start to learn theory and develop relative pitch, so that I can start to figure out songs without tabs.

     

    I have the Earmaster pro software, and in running through it I do a pretty good job of identifying the differences between major 5ths, 3rds and octaves. Big spaces between those notes, so it's pretty easy.

     

    What I'm stuck on is telling the difference between Major and Minor 2nds. Full and half steps. You'd think that after playing scales it would just be easy, but it isn't.

     

    Has anyone here attempted this? I think I'm asking because I'm trying to understand if I'm just dense, or if other musicians find this hard too.

     

    Does anyone have any learning experience to share? Ideas and stuff? Thanks.

  5. Statistics. R or Matlab. Probably both.

     

    C. Everything is written in C. Java, Python, Rails, every operating system including phones, are written in C. It's essential to know how basic and efficient programming works.

     

    Big systems technology. COBOL isn't going away. A student should understand how it works and how it fits into the modern picture.

     

    Big data. Not just the buzzword, but what it really means and how to use it.

     

    Office tools. Excel, Access and VBA programming. Executives love excel charts.

     

    Database skills. SQL and how it integrates with a programming language. Too many programmers only think in the language they work in, and pay no mid to how data in a database is stored or how to get to it efficiently. Advanced SQL and Database tuning concepts as well. It's necessary in the real world. Doesn't matter if it's taught on MySQL or Oracle.

     

    Basic debugging and problem solving. How to approach a program fault, and a data issue. Which are 2 different things. How to replicate, capture and devise a plan of action to resolve.

     

    Testing. Why it's important and how to program with unit testing.

     

    Teamwork skills. How to function in a team setting and contribute effectively. Listen effectively too.

     

    Basic hardware architecture. You cannot program efficiently if you don't know your target environment. How does a system work? What is n-tier architecture? How does a network really work?

     

    Design patterns. Good design fundamentals to partition the data from the logic from the UI from the security mechanisms.

     

    Data security and cryptography. Teach how to protect data and just how easy it is to crack encryption with modern hardware and cracking tools.

     

    Pick your trendy programming languages. But teach how to solve real world problems with them. Perhaps have the student write a hex dump utility in each language. Including C (above)

     

    Character encoding. Unicode. They need to know that internationalization is a thing. It's not 1979, ASCII is pretty much obsolete.

  7. The contraband Twilight Zone is a disappointment. It sounds horrible. Is that track from a known bootleg?

     

    Other bands have released bootleg material officially, but it usually sounds pretty good. At least A-.

     

    The rest of the box set is OK. The alternate night Massey Hall tracks are a treat.
