  1. Just uploaded a video of "The Spirit of Radio" we took from our rehearsal last week. Did the whole multi-camera thing with a GoPro and iPhones. I'm on guitar and vocals.

My bassist buddy Rick and I have been jamming with my 14yr old son Ryan to try and give him some real-world experience of playing with actual PEOPLE in a band situation. He really acquits himself admirably (IMHO). My buddy Rick does as well as he "claims" to never have heard the song before I asked him to learn it. He's not a RUSH guy… ?!?!?! right?

Funny anecdote, when I suggested we learn the song, I really didn't think it through. Singing the choruses while playing that running pull-off guitar riff was a real bear to get down.

Anyway, it's not note-for-note accurate but we just do it for fun. Hope you guys like it.

  2. Nice!

Is that line only or does it have mic pres?

I'm honestly not sure. I looks like just line level, but I'm going to open them up after I get my work area cleaned up and see what's going in inside. There are no schematics available anywhere I can find. The individual channel strips are going on Ebay for about $50-$80 each so that makes me wonder.

I also contacted Heil Sound regarding the top one. Waiting to see if they can help me.

  3. For YEARS I have been looking for early 70s Heil HM88 mixer. My very first band recorded our demo on one back in 19… well you never mind that detail. A few weeks ago someone in Detroit answered my "looking for" craigslist ad and I was able to acquire this one, in VERY poor condition. I actually think this a prototype (fingers crossed for big money on this one!!) because it's missing a few features and looks different than the mass market version, it has no serial number and there are other tells that this is "earlier". Can't find out ANYTHING about this online.

Anyway, few days ago I finally found someone selling the mass-market model in outstanding condition in Boston. It arrived today!!!

I'm super excited to finally have one again. I LOVE vintage gear, especially from my childhood.

  4. Hey guys. Lot of these posts say missing plug-in. I don't have Flash. iPhones and iPads don't support it either. YouTube usually feeds us Mac folks an HTML5 version but it's not happening here. Maybe people could post a link along with their embedded media?

It could easily just be my setup but I wanted to mention it.

  5. The very first time I heard The Garden I said, "This is it. Neil is signing off. This is his swan song."

We now pretty much know there won't be anymore tours. Hopefully they'll still record new material and do an occasional show.

Here's my rendition of The Garden... Enjoy!

I guess you can't actually embed a Youtube video? :(

  6. For whatever reason, I can't hear TSOR no matter what I click on. I can hear the next song you do, but not TSOR.

You did a good job singing and playing on Limelight and would never have known that wasn't your usual dual role.

Thanks. Bizarre. Here's my main profile, maybe you can select it from there.

But yeah, hard as hell (for me) to play Alex and sing Geddy. RUSH isn't designed for that. LOL

  7. I had to listen to it again.

First off, THANK YOU for your kind words. RUSH inspired me to become a musician and to be compared in ANY way is simply an honor I don't believe I deserve. I’ve been both Geddy and Alex in RUSH cover bands over the years. I’ve got a bunch of original material where people have compared my guitar playing to Alex’s. The interesting thing in this current situation where my son is on drums, is that I’m having to play the Alex parts while singing the Geddy vocals! This is an entirely new animal for me and an unexpected challenge.

A good example of this is the most recent RUSH song we’ve been practicing, “The Spirit of Radio”. I told the guys, “sure, played and sang this a million times, let’s work it up.” Only to discover, much to my chagrin, that playing that running guitar riff and singing the chorus is an absolute nightmare!

We haven’t done a video of it yet but I always record rehearsals, and after the last one I think we’re about ready to do it for a YouTube vid (maybe next week!).

My son has always demonstrated an affinity for drums (see that first link), but he only started lessons at 11yrs old.

  8. It's rather a long and convoluted story that begins here http://www.robkmusic...ext-generation/

But the short version is now at 14yrs old he's jammin' with his "Old Man". :)

This is the most recent RUSH song we've done on video as a band: Limelight (RUSH cover)

    I couldn't be a prouder father!

You have every right to be proud and then some. Your son is really good. Really good. i'd love to see how he would do on The Weapon.

And who is that on the lead guitar and singing?

Thanks. That would be the Old Man... me. ;)
