Seven seas of gold is the worst Rush song ever the ultimate album filler where is the guitar solo?
-
I gave no thought to inserting this in top 10 I was at this gig and never really appreciated how good this is until I played it recently, geddy said this was a very challenging track to perform live for him guess that playing intense bass riffs while playing synths wasn't easy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5gH8ehjm5I

A high point in an otherwise drab and plodding album.
A drab and plodding song on a drab and plodding album.
You've got the wrong Album that album was released in 2002 I believe.

No one gets through this plodding, tedious, turgid snoozefest without a fight (and usually enough caffeine to kill a lab rat)

Haha apart from the VT songs that list is a compilation of some of the best songs, he's put them on the wrong thread.
Ding, ding, ding. Give that man a free bowl of soup on his way out. Awesome song... :)
There are 6 or 7 good songs on that list and 1 great one. The rest I could care less if they were ever recorded. Anybody that knows me knows which song on that list is great...I have a few that should be put up for vote:
I Think I'm Going Bald
Lessons
Emotion Detector
Tai Shan
High Water
Chain Lightning
Superconductor
Anagram
Red Tide
Available Light
Hand Over Fist
Face Up
Neurotica
You Bet Your Life
The Color of Right
Dog Years
Carve Away the Stone
Peaceable Kingdom
The Stars Look Down
Sweet Miracle
Out of the Cradle
I think I've done my damage.....
let me guess, you're a 2112 fan
:D
(good lord your list is 1,000 miles off course)
Lessons. And too right! Will never get the disdain for anything 2112 related!
The little dude is growing on me...but I might have to remove the growth soon if it keeps spurting forth all this weapon nonsense!
Mr. AnEggPlant, take it from a guy with excellent music taste (*cough*), you must brush up your ideas! The Weapon is near godly! (Not quite though BUT NEAR!)
Opinions are like a....well YOU guys!
Actually, I'm not a HUGE 2112 fan... I dug the first side, and Passage to Bangcock & Something for Nothing more than anything else. I was more of a Caress of Steel fan, and It's not that I don't LIKE I Think I'm Going Bald, I just think it's way out of place for that album.
Anything from the mid-80's era and further up the line doesn't turn me on... maybe a tune here and there. Barring Dreamline, I think RtB should never have been recorded! And odds and ends down the line just don't sit well, and feel like under developed filler.

April 21 and April 24 A Show Of Hands Birmingham England Album they performed on 3 nights altogether and the album was recorded there across all 3 nights, brilliant concerts. May 2013 CA Birmingham England.

Just before I start I'd just say that I listened to 70s Rush stuff but it didn't really float my boat until Moving Pictures was released which completely converted me, the introduction of heavily involved synthesizers which was like bringing in a fourth band member not forgetting some innovative electronic percussion especially on Signals meant the 80s was the decade of collectively the most popular Rush Albums. Rush brought in a specialist keyboard player when they recorded Power Windows because of the complexity of doing this with 3 band members, saw an interview with Geddy Lee where he said when playing the PW numbers live they had to use some of the material from backstage floppy discs, didn't detract from the shows though as Lee always played the keyboards himself it just wasn't possible to cram everything in.
As far as these Albums detracting Alex Lifesons role are concerned this inspired him to raise his game to compete with the new sound and probably most of his best guitar solos were left in this decade, I don't know how many must have been 30 or 40 of them sadly his last proper guitar solos were non existent after Role The Bones. All my favourite Rush songs involve great guitar solos.
Don't class Permanent Waves as an 80s Album even if it officially is because of the release date, Caravan was made in about 2010 but it is classed as a 2012 song because of it's Albums release date. Permanent Waves is stylistically 70s not 80s.
Moving Pictures- The first in line of the great 80s Albums, Rush becoming more appealing to pop fans a good thing.
Signals-Pure excellence how can anyone not like Chemistry a very addictive guitar solo? And The Weapon is awesome.
Grace Under Pressure- A truly sombre and emotive creation heavy use of syths here but did't spoil it, was made how it was meant to be made, Kid Gloves and Between the wheels are two of my favourites.
Power Windows- Still wrestling with my conscience as to what my favourite Album is this or Signals? Grand Designs though is top 5 for me though never have got bored with that in 30 years still play it every week even if I don't play the Album and Emotion Detector little talked about but an absolute gem.
Hold Your Fire-Hold Your Fire haters look away now! This is a masterful creation of beautiful guitar solos and inspiring use of keyboards which combine to harmonize a mix of brilliantly written songs, 3 top numbers are Open Secrets, Lock And Key and Prime Mover, oh and I love Tai Shan.
Presto- The Beginning of the end. Signs here that the a different direction was starting to take shape it's still pretty good though but embedded in the shadows of the previous releases.

Despite the obvious disliking of the song on here Gran Designs I probably play more than anything, sometimes I just select that one off the album when I'm selecting random tracks. Very close to admitting it's my favourite Rush song don't know why but I never gat bored with it, great intro, great chorus, one of Alex's best solos and glorious close out, a very catchy number.I think I bought the cassette tape when it came out. I was very happy to see this tour. I remember everyone being glad that Geddy gave up that Steinberger stick he'd been playing and went back to a large wooden bass again. They played every song from Power Windows, except Emotion Detector, at the two shows I attended. I had only seen them once, in 1980, before the PW tour.

Interesting how 'The Bones' gets dissed on a Test for Echo and Counterparts topic, I think Roll The Bones is one of the very best albums, nothing wrong with T4E CP either, Color of right is a great song and and Everyday Glory is one of their best ever tracks I listened to it today that track has everything.

Clockwork Angels is worthless. You should spend your time and money on Hold Your Fire instead.
I don't dislike it but it aint no HYF that's a proper Rush Album

As a synth era fan going to this tour would have left me feeling empty, so glad they didn't do Europe or I'd a been tempted to go and been disappointed.

Think I read that Priest recorded British steel in a Country House in a weekI still would like to know when they go into the studio to work on a new album, who foots the bill? And who pays for the producer?
At this point, their company foots the bill.
Would you happen to know, or can you give a good estimate, of how much the entire production (including paying the producer) of creating a new album would cost?
It's all going to depend on where they record it and who they use as a producer/engineer. You've got rental costs for the studio, you've got to pay the producer, engineers... etc. Recording an album even as cheaply as you can get one done today is going to be ~ $5000 -$10,000 and that's if an artist only spends a few days in the studio and doesn't do more than just basic recording. I would imagine they spend quite a bit more than this because they would spend more than just a few days in the studio. They can afford to rent out a place for a month or more and work on the music while they are there.
Also, if the band adds things like an orchestra or choir to their songs, you're looking at extra money to pay these people to record their parts. Studio rental costs seems to be the big financial burden when it comes to recording an album. Black Sabbath recorded their first album in six hours because they couldn't afford anything else.
I've known some people who have played in local bands, so i've heard how much of a financial issue it can be to afford studio time just to record a few songs. Obviously, a band like Rush is much more financially stable and can afford to take more time to get their albums finished now and not have it cripple them. Still, I think it was something special years ago when bands like Rush and others used to get a new album out every year. They just went into the studio and got it done. There was no messing around, no filler, just a band getting to the point and releasing something great.
The Moody Blues recorded Days of Future Passed in one week.
