  1. why would it be a big deal if they continued on as rush with a new drummer? if they can replace him with someone as good or better so be it. now as far as lyrics then yes as I have said before they need neil. not to mention ged and al can be bought. think of the most outrageous dollar amount you can think of and then think of them saying no we are too loyal to "the band" it aint gonna happen. If the money is right they will tour as rush with a new drummer.

All three are needed to form the holy trinity that is Rush. Without any one of them, there is no Rush.

  2. MD: What's in the future? If Rush isn't touring, will you still record? Write prose? Be a dad?

Neil: You just answered it. There's no strict answer, but those possibilities are all there.

Yay, they're planning the second leg of the R40 tour!

Actually it sounds like he's equivocating. In other articles he's flat-out said he's retired.

In those other articles, when was he interviewed? Before the tour? After? During?

Wasn't this article conducted in the middle of R40? Peart doesn't seem like the type that was going to say DURING a tour, "Without a doubt I'm retiring after this tour." Ask Peart today and his answers might be different.

I forget where the links are, but I was thinking of the following things:

    - some big shindig where Jack Black talked to Neil, who said it was over.

    - Neil's own blog posting where he was reveling in the fact that it was "the end of the road."

    - not an article, but a twitter by Neil's novelist friend, who said Neil is retired.

    - The fact that the road crew got Tag Heuer watches that said "thanks for the memories" when the tour was done.

But yeah if the interview was DURING the tour, Neil would be mumbly about future retirement plans at that point.

  4. It's upsetting to me to see how many people would actually be okay with replacing Neil...

It oesn't bother me because I know it would never happen. Without Neil, there is no Rush. Geddy and Alex with a different drummer will never be Rush. I remember one of them, probably Geddy, said as much once. I don't recall the quote exactly but the sentiment of it stayed with me. If you believe Rush is a band with integrity, then you believe Rush can only be Geddy, Alex and Neil. They are not Yes.. they are not KISS. They are RUSH; not interchangeable, each irreplaceable.

Most members here, including me, are saying if Ged n Al want to continue under a different name, that's fine. They have the ethical right to perform and record under a different name if they choose. They are supposed to retire just cuz Neil told them so with three months notice?

Rush Prime Rule #1, that is almost never mentioned on TRF, all 3 need to agree for them to do something. Retirement is the biggest something that they can currently do, so I am sure Geddy will get at least a pound of flesh from Neil The Emperor, before the final act, he usually does ;)

Or they could just fire the drummer and find another one. He is the "new guy" after all.

  5. As a fan, it's hard to accept and understand Neil's behavior, if true.

It's not the desire to retire or to spend time with his family.

It's the apparent fact that he knew he would be done but then was passive aggressive and arguably unprofessional. It would have been fine to say, "guys, we have x more shows, and I am DONE. For good." Not think it to HIMSELF and then not say anything clear.

Of course, from a marketing perspective, they're leaving tons of money and markets on the table.

Hope he gets restless next spring and changes his mind. Maybe fly with the guys and forget the arduous way he travels...

But how does anyone know what Neil was saying or doing behind the scenes? Are there spy reports?

  6. Somehow I think it's more likely that Rush wanted to release a "first album of the 80's" rather than a "last album of the 70's."

Also PW was a new direction from their fantasy epics, so I think they were forging ahead into the future, not clinging to the past.

  7. Music is officially dated by the day it is released. It matters not one bit what the fans or critics or anyone else thinks. If it was anything else, tell me what is the correct year for Chinese Democracy?

    Umm...China hasn't become a democracy.

What does that have to do with anything?
